I ran accross this big bad guy on the third level of the Circle of Magi and got my butt handed to me thoroughly. Anyone got an advice on taking him down? Wynne just doesn't seem to be able to keep the tank (Alistar) alive long enough.
And is this guy part of a quest or something?

Make sure alistair has all his defensive auras on, unless you got him skills in other areas, then you will probably have to kite him around with ranged players.

You mean Kenloch Tower? No, the revenant is not part of a questline.

Wynne was able to keep him up when I ran through it, but I blasted through most of my lyrium potions. Make sure he has regeneration up at all times and then Heal on top of that. Sometimes he does a bit too much damage in a burst and Alistair should take a healing salve to catch up.
2 mages (my main is a mage), Alistair, and the Chanter/fighter girly (with a bow) took me about 4-5 minutes to down him.

Run around in circles while everyone pelts him with ranged. When he does the pull if you are on the other side of the benches from him you won't get into melee range.

Cool, I'll try the kiting strategy tonight. I suppose that means I need to control Alistar for the fight then.

Come back later, especially if the Circle is the first place you went.

Here's how I handled it (level 7, hard difficulty on 360 (so more like normal on PC, I think)):
I'm a sword & shield warrior. I had my party members (Wynne, Morrigan, Leilana) hold at range with line of sight to the statue. Wynne's tactics are all healing based (no combat) - it's her default healing set. Morrigan is set with a slight modification to her default nuking set (I tweaked it to make her activate frost weapons first). Leilana is set to attack with bow from range.
I walk up with Shield Wall & Threaten active, and start the encounter. The shield bash line of talents will have no effect on him, so don't waste your time. At this point, if you've set up correctly, you just watch the slugfest and tweak if things go wrong. I stood toe to toe with the Revenant, Wynne kept me fully healed. He broke away to attack Morrigan and killed her, but after that I kept solid aggro with him and it was just a matter of time.
My first attempt, I didn't know what was going to come out of the statue, so everyone was clustered around him. Wynne was overwhelmed trying to heal, and my guy died first, resulting in a total wipe. Next time, I took the approach above and took him out.
Edit: This event reminded me of the option fights with liches that were scattered about Baldur's Gate 2. Some of the best fights in that game due to the craziness of the AD&D spell system.
