I think having playable factions will add a feeling of an adventure in ME:A and it will be very awesome if they do!! Mass Effect 2 gave me an idea of having factions that are playable of what is it like joining The Blue Suns, Blood Pack, and The Eclipse mercenary gangs, or being an operative for the Shadow Broker doing covert and black op missions, counterintelligence and information gathering. Instead of fighting them why not join them? I think it will be perfect for the ME series!! If not on ME: A then maybe on the next Mass Effect game or create a DLC to join factions.

I'll give you guys some brief examples playable of factions
  • Space Vikings (Ulfric Stormblack's idea)- I think it can be a pirate faction to add a criminal element of being a pirate to feel what is like to be a free roam criminal of plundering ships, raiding rival pirate organizations, experience debauchery, (lots of it ;) Isabella inspired me the idea of debauchery) smuggle goods, and living your life as you see fit. You be able to rescue crewmen from blown up and derelict ships to turn them to pirates, be able to colonize a small settlement as a haven for pirates, brothels, and clubs for entertainment and extra profit for income. Set up benefits, rewards, and risks of being a pirate for players to experience dangerous adventures of a new galaxy. Salvage ships for tech in outer space, have smuggling operations to earn natural resources as valued currency and connections. And to have fun plundering ships for the first time in outer space, it is inspired by Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
  • Mercenary Guilds/PMCs- I think they should allow players an opportunity to play a mercenary for private military companies, instead of fighting them all the time (fight the rival gangs anyway) and to have realistic combat missions to give it more life of being a soldier for hire, and rewards of being a mercenary to make a living in a new galaxy. You begin as a low ranked soldier in a mercenary company, your very first assignment is from ExoGeni Co to disrupt pirate activities, gather intel of their activities and destroy a pirate fortress, you usually go with a 3 man team (one tech engineer, sniper, and yourself) to recon the compound for enemy numbers, communication towers, and defenses. You order your sniper to overwatch while you infiltrate the fortress to obtain documents of their activities to disrupt their attacks on ExoGeni, and to plant charges on antiaircraft defenses and communications towers to prevent reinforcements from coming. You ordered your groung attack gunship to destroy the fortress, and cut pirate numbers and reinforcements while your team doing ambushes to disrupt pirate activities. After your assignment is over you not only getting paid, you can unlock benefits like calling for air support/air/orbital strikes, reward you armor and firepower, and rise to ranks to get higher pay for combat missions. I will love to be a full fledged soldier for hire in space doing my dirt and to get paid while fighting dirty!
  • Aerospace Aviation & Technology Engineering Co.- It is an independent company that gives it's services of upgrading, crafting, and modifying spaceships and technology for a premium price for their services. You can join their society by salvaging tech from ships, look for blueprints, and gathering material for production to gain access and skills of crafting tech and make your own fighters, frigates, and ground vehicles like tanks, rovers and futuristic motorcycles (it will be fun!). It is inspired by Gadgetron and Slim Cognito's @ Ratchet and Clank Collection.
  • Various Weapon Manufacturers- Returning companies such as Kassa Fabrications, Elkoss Combine, and so on to manufacture the state of the art weapon technology and armor. However they should revamp weapon design of something like Halo weapons to have more realism to it, and armor should be more authentic and reliable for battle for durability of how much you can take damage instead of relying on your shields for protection and from hazardous environments like heat, cold, and radiation. I think weapons and armor needs some serious overhaul and the companies who makes them should be more interactive like fetching plans, and raw materials for discounts and weapon and armor crafting bonuses to make your arsenal have maximum firepower! It is inspired by Fallout New Vegas Gun Runners.
Well that's my thoughts so far! Feel free to tell me yours!

how about if there is also a sort of Andromedan union made up of multiple races like in the MW? You could maybe join them and go against the Milky Wayans (assuming there is some conflict between them such as a war).

Or maybe you just make your own rogue faction or sth.

Honestly though, I do not know how well this can translate into a ME game. What makes it ME to me is not the open-worldness so much as the narrative. Being able to pick factions might change the narrative quite significantly, and honestly resembles Fallout.

I think it could work wonderfully for Andromeda.

Instead of having one galaxy wide governing body with a couple evil rebel factions trying to ruin everyone's day. Why not have a galaxy divided into multiple factions all vying for power. Then we can choose to join a specific faction, play more like a mercenary by offering assistance to whatever faction seems most beneficial to you personally at the time, or even as an independent by siding with no faction and just doing your own thing.

Something I think Fallout 4 does very well with the BoS, Railroad, Institute, and Minutemen. Though admittedly the overall narrative suffered for it...

Perhaps a better scenario would be trying to unify all these factions, thus bringing peace and giving you warm fuzzes; That's definitely more in Bioware's wheelhouse.

Most probably not. Judging from the information released, mainly the trailers what we are most likely going to get is some kind of colonisation/exploration faction which is going to give us missions to complete.

If I were running the franchise, I would have been tempted to simply start with a character in the Terminus Systems around the end of ME1 / ME2 prologue.  Might have even pulled out the unimaginative title Mass Effect: Mercenaries.

I actually like that idea. You also could write some Zaeed or Aria stories or something. I mean you already have a wide range of characters in the series, who's story's could be further explored. But this probably would only get as much funding as some spin off would. But who knows, Stargate Atlantis turned out to be pretty good.

I had a similar idea but set after the events of ME3(I had it before I played it and it could still work with destroy ending). Basically instead of soldier in the employ of the government you get to be a freelancer type character where you can do whatever sidemissions you want. More political and less galaxy-shattering main storyline.

Factions and such don't really jive with story-driven or character-driven games. When the story and characters are generic, like with Bethesda games, you can put in factions because they don't have any impact on much of anything. I would rather BioWare focus their efforts on the story and characters and hope they never make their stories generic enough to accommodate factions or guilds.

I couldn't agree more and I think the next Mass Effect game should be an adventure of doing whatever you want, instead of just playing the hero saving the galaxy or humanity all the time.

I'm not sure how well this would work with an over-arching story. I really liked it in Fallout 4, but there was a personal tie to the factions there, no matter what. And they are the over-arching story in a way. Particularly because we're newbies in Andromeda, so we can't really just join existing factions there. We'd be outsiders to all of them, more like our own faction.

Hm, having to work with factions within the ark sounds interesting. People with different mindsets about how to approach our mission in Andromeda. Study the planets? The nature? The people? Colonize the land? Make diplomatic advances to native races? Perhaps we could join a faction in that sense, throwing the protag's weight behind whatever approach suits them best.

That is a good idea! I think they should've have those comics and novels make them into a video game between ME1 & 2, to import it to ME2 to play different characters other than playing Shepard all the time to play events from novels. I think they should have adventurous events and make it more fun, instead of playing the hero all the time and nothing else.

It's nothing wrong to branch out new stuff to make the game interesting, I think BioWare can make factions story related. It's a new chapter, new beginnings and opportunities to be anything and do anything you want in the game.

You think Mass Effect should be everything but Mass Effect and you don't seem to understand that resources are finite.

It's nothing wrong to revamp ME and putting new things to games to make it more successful, but can still keep their core beliefs of ME the same like their storytelling and character development. And if they can't do it in Andromeda then maybe on the next game.

Why traitors? Isn't being a mercenary anything but? Loyal to the highest bidder?

They nerfed the whole merc band thing.

Blue Suns are an organised crime gang, Blood Pack are a racist hit squad, Eclipse members are initiated through murder, they literally kill to get those colours.

These aren't the guys Nassana Dantius hired in ME2 and nowhere close to the Terminus merc bands of ME1. These are street gangs and mobsters in space.
