Archer or Mage?

I'm thinking of getting back in the groove of this game and I was wondering what class to pick. If I go with archer I'll probably go assassin and for Mage knight enchanter what would be best and what would be the best party setup to go along with it?

With either of those specs as an IQ, you don't need a party. :)

You should check out actionhero's DW Assassin build. If you like epic damage, you'll love that.

If you really prefer Archer, give Artificer a try. The spec is fun, stupidly powerful, and has great party-wide buffs. Check out this video:



Personally for mage I prefer Rift, but KE is good too. Try a build with no Spirit Blade active. KE as a mage is pretty powerful. Who knows? You may find a good use for Disruption Field.

For Archer: party could be Cass, Viv, Dorian. Or any warrior as a tank and two mages. Dorian has good banter with everyone, Cass/Viv is kind of boring IMO, but Cass/Solas is worse, so.

For KE: it depends. If you are going to be doing close combat with SB, then take two rogues, like Cole and Sera (respec'd to DW) and make it a melee fest. And maybe Solas for mage. Sera has good banter with everyone. Cole/Solas has tons of forshadowing references, Cole/Sera and Sera/Solas have good banter.

If you are doing more magery at range, switch Cole to Archer, add a tank like Blackwall, and Dorian for mage. You could alternatively go with Cass/Sera/Iron Bull, which has some of the best banter of the game.

If you are doing the Walk Softly Trial on Nightmare, you'll need two mages with Dispel, or one mage and Cass with Spell Purge.

Ah I see! Do you know any good archer builds that could go with the assassin? And I'm thinking of shaping my party as Cass, Dorian, or Cole or Iron Bull how does that sound?

If you go Archer Assassin, why take Cole? He's also an Assassin. Even if you keep him as DW, that's kind of boring. Cass/Dorian/IB is fine, though IB may die a lot at first, if you are running Nightmare, particularly with Trials. None of those guys will be able to keep up with your damage output once you are Level 17 and up, but for banter they are fine. You might even get Dorian and IB to hook up. :)

 

You can use actionhero's build, just replace the DW skills with Archery skills, as follows

 

1. Stealth - Long Shot (All races start with two abilities at level 1)
2. First Blood
3. Explosive Arrow
4. Pincushion
5. Death From Above
6. Leaping Shot
7. Shot From The Shadows
8. Clinging Shadows
9. Eagle Eye
10. Hidden Blades
11. Overkill
12. I Was Never Here
13. Knife In the Shadows
14. Mark of Death
15. Caltrops
16. Looks Like it Hurt
17. Mark of Doom
18. Cheap Shot
19. Evasion
20. Evade
21. Ambush
22. Shadow Step
23. Throwing Blades
24. Precision Targeting
24. Throat Cutter
 
 
Also, you can keep IB, and the whole party, alive longer in the early game if you spend IB's first 5 skill points in Battlemaster as follows:
 
1. Grappling Chain
2. Crippling Blows
3. Coup de Grace
4. Horn of Valor
5. Fortifying Blast
 
Have Horn of Valor in an active slot and set it to Preferred in AI and IB will spam Horn of Valor and max out the Guard on every member of the party.

Was just going to reply this, war horn is awesome. Could do the game without barrier.

Awesome I like what is see! I also forgot that Cole was an assassin but I like the way my party will look!
