How would you want side missions to be handled?

You should get something from that of course, some advantage or something? Also I would want side missions just for the sake of codex entries, I mean gathering intel is a legit thing...I think

Ideally I'd want them to be more realistic. Something like DA's Chanter Board, not being a creep like Shepard who listened to intimate conversations just to get a quest.

ME3 handled them the best of any bioware title, imo. (the N7 missions and story relevant ones, not the easter egg hunts)
I'd personally like that style, but more of them with more talking/story bits.

Meanwhile in reality it will probably be MMO style fetch or radiant quests though.....

I will pose this as a question after having watched another trailer for No Man's Sky: Could we possibly get one-off side quests that are generated procedurally? These would be something like the repeating quests in Skyrim to go kill a dragon, a giant, or smugglers, but it would be generated as existing on certain planets, but not simply repeating the exact scenario, which caused the Skyrim repeat quests to get boring. Perhaps generating them procedurally would not prevent them from being boring either. I don't know.

Valuable in terms of rewards and content.
Involving ACTUAL interactions, rather than a series of letters on the floor.
Some serious, some lighthearted.
Divergent paths.
Mildly consequential in some way.

I dislike side missions, because most of the time, they are usually boring. Please, no more fetch quest. Unless it adds to the story... in which case... include some funny dialogue for a silver lining.

I don't really have any strict requirements on the type of side quest I'd enjoy. I just want colorful characters, multiple ways to resolve the quest and decent companion participation in dialogue, whether it be funny or insightful. I'd like to see side quests that we can end nonviolently again, sort of like Major Kyle. I also want an insufferable bastard that tests our patience, like that warlord guy Hackett sends Shepard to negotiate with.

ME2 had the right idea. Completely optional missions randomly activated by scanning, and did not cost towards the war effort or fed the "need to build up war assets" crap that ME3 pulled.
Only this time I'd want more interaction. Not just scanning and boom "anomaly detected". ME1's E3 trailer or teaser or whatever showed someone from Noveria contacting the Normandy with urgent request for assistance. Ashley and Garrus seemed to be pondering whether to respond. I loved that.
More of that wouldn't hurt. Adds immersion BIG TIME.

Populated with as many interesting characters and stories as the main quest path.
I'd also like to see a return to a cinematic focus during dialogue with quest givers.
No fetch quests.
Everything that DA:I didn't do, basically.

Yep agree with every word. if there are going to be any fetch items they should be built organically into main or side quest path locations.

I'd love to see many of the side missions have payoff in the main missions and core story. Perhaps you gain new knowledge that lets you solve a situation in a unique way, or a key that grants you a shortcut through a stronghold, or codes to automated defenses that let you wipe out a tough battle, or bits of history and lore that unlock additional dialogue options with your companions. They should feel rewarding and deepen your access to the game world, not just gift you a few credits and a sweet new gun.
And no table missions, especially if they're dependent on real time. If there has to be something similar, let it be us sending scouts out to gather resources we're too busy to scrape together or to discover promising new planets and side missions we can then tackle by ourselves.

I liked ME2's finding a distress signal and it leading to a chain of quests or overhearing a broadcast on the Citadel triggering something like in ME1 but really I just don't want ME3's creepy eavesdropping.
Side quests should be optional but not pointless.
The N7 quests in ME3 were okay, I wouldn't mind something like that again for some quests but with MEA's Samantha giving the information rather than telling you to check your emails.

To add to what's already been said I'd like to see some competing side quests added. For example, an asteroid is on collision course with a newly established colony. Bioware's approach would be colonists are located at 6 different sites, go to each to evacuate - maybe fight some enemies along the way or have a timer ticking away. Instead of that, maybe you get pleas for help from all of them and you have to decide which 2 to save. Maybe some have more people while others have useful technology you can exploit (unique weapons/armor components for customization). Evacuate 50 farmers or save 6 scientists and their tech. Maybe another group has a quest giver that initiates a string of side quests (a different kind of reward).

I think more immersion into the quests would be the key. Quest areas filled with things to do but not the "run from A to B and press a button" type.

Yeah I wish there was more string quests. Save someone and they give you a quest. Don't save someone and something else happens.

Those MMO style fetch questa can burn in hell for all I care. Sure put one or two in the entire game for the sake of exploration but don't overdo.....fetch quests are not secondary quests.

Agreed. Btw... ME3's Samantha gave you the information for the N7 missions directly in a conversation, you didn't need to check your emails for them.

Maybe it could be cool if doing an assignment tweaked something in the main story, adding a dialogue option for example. Just for flavour, to add cohesion to the protagonist's actions.

First, I'd get rid of eavesdropping for starting sidequests. Give the quest giver a yellow exclamation mark, a few "hey player! I've got a job for you!" lines, and a conversation scene where you can ask questions about the sidequest they're about to give you.
I'd also like to see more multi-part sidequests. Something like Search Derelict Ship (overrun by space pirates!) -> Track Space Pirates (space pirate HQ coordinates found!) -> Destroy Space Pirate HQ.
