They wouldn't. Unless there is a contrived reason, like a "stasis field" that renders useless anything more complicated than medieval weapons.

I think the current weapon desings and ammunition system are fine if they want to stick with it, but PLEASE have them shoot through the bottom barrel. Shooting through the top barrel makes no sense physically. It's not aligned with the stock, so it would create additional torque and increase the kick of the weapon. Also, just aesthetically, the top barrel looks like a part of the optics system.

How about simply getting rid of the upper barrel and the idiotic fish-like design of some weapons?
I don't know why, but ME weapons mostly look goofy and strange, not all of them, but enough.
