Hi there;

I'd like to build a rogue which uses mainly dual-blades, you know those with AoE damage.
How does it differ from a "common" dual rogue. I'd like to max the AoE.

The only difference is the AoE effect. That's it. You can have any combination of single and dual, like a single-blade dagger in one hand and a dual-blade in the other.

If you want to max AoE damage of auto-attacks, equip two dual-blades. That's all you have to do. It's not a specialization.

But it is much better to always pick the weapon with the highest base damage. Ignore the DPS value, that's pretty close to meaningless. Ability damage, like Twin Fangs, is based on base damage, not DPS. The "AoE" is ignored, all that matters is the number. So if you have a single-blade dagger with base damage of 100 and a dual blade with 65 AoE, take the 100 single-blade always. If you later get a dual-blade with 105 AoE, switch to that.

With two exceptions, only the main hand damage number is used for abilities, though. So you can put the 100 single-blade in your main hand and the 65 AoE in your off-hand and you will still have some AoE effect, though at a slight penalty for being in the off-hand for auto-attacks.

Dual-Wielding (Double-Dagger Rogue): Stats and Damage Calculation

  • Stat bonuses from both daggers are applied to the wielding character as a whole and used in damage calculations for every attack.
  • When autoattacking, attacks will alternate between using main-hand and off-hand damage values (see Autoattackssection).
  • In almost all other cases, including abilities and combos, only main-hand damage is used for calculating damage output (this is true even for abilities that result in multiple hits).
    • There are two exceptions: Flank Attack (uses off-hand damage for both strikes) and Twin Fangs (uses main-hand damage for one strike and off-hand damage for the other).

You can also select from these Rogue skills with AoE, but any rogue, including Archer, can use these, so again, nothing "different".

Sabotage

  • Caltrops - Tread Lightly upgrade is an excellent AoE, since the Bleeding effect stacks
  • Toxic Cloud
  • Throwing Blades/Fistful of Daggers

Artificer

  • Spike Trap
  • Elemental Mines

Assassin

  • Knockout Bomb

Tempest

  • Flask of Frost
  • Flask of Lightning

Of the specializations, Artificer has the best AoE abilities, Tempest the worst. I wouldn't even really count the Tempest abilities as AoE, their range is so small and their effects so meh.

Thanks,
Must say you are thorough with your answers. Read your post to The Best Dagger yesterday. It helped a lot!
I think I stay with my Assassin build... And use dual-blades occasionally.
