The Krogan are not a sterilized race any longer.
Indeed. They are an extinct species.

At the most, they could potentially be functionally extinct, but this game clearly throws total extinction out the window.

I really wish BioWare would be consistent about things like this. Do my choices matter or not?
Does the Genophage actually pose a threat to continued Krogan existence or not? (P.S. It doesn't. It never did)
There's plenty of reasons why keeping the protagonist being human (or with no species choice, which inevitably falls back to human) makes sense, it allows a more cohesive and personal story instead of having abundance of generic neutral human/salarian/quarian/turian/whatever dialogue.
At least I would personally rather have an engaging story thought out around your race than "oh a salarian? i hear salarians think really fast" remark once every 3 hours of gameplay.
Don't get me wrong, this is of course only my preference. I am just saying why I like that game will be human only, it doesn't mean it's not a trade off, there are obviously merits to having multiple choices as well. Again just my own reasoning to why I support human supremacy #gocerberus.

Depends on your definition of 'human', I'd argue that at least 70% of our species (****** sapiens) actually AREN'T human.99% of the player-base is human.

Had no idea what Denisovan hybrids were till I googled it. Turns out I may be one. This forum gives me the creeps sometimes.
I'm here to help. And make jokes. Mostly the latter.
A human protagonist does make sense -- it's a wee bit boring, but sensical and all that. That doesn't mean that I won't occasionally WISH I was playing a turian, but I'm fine with things as they are.
why isn't multiplayer multi-race content enough?
I too hate the humans are special snowflakes tropes that is the most super special awesome best at everything despite being a newcomer
but all the "aliens" are basically human personalities inside different bodies.
so might as well...

MP having no campaign thus none of the things that comes with it comes to mind.
I would not mind the ability to play as an alien
Wrex uses the word extinction because all they do is war with each other and become mercs, he believes they'll die out if they don't stop fighting for at least a generation.
Which is probably true the infant mortality rate plus the overall mortality rate must have been devastating.
We're agreed then. It's not the Genophage that's leading to a Krogan decline, it's their own stupidity. ![]()
The Krogan have been murdering each other, and coping with a high infant mortality rate, since before their industrial revolution; all the Genophage did was lower viable birth rates back down to those levels.

This is why having a human protagonist makes sense... Just look at the facts below
Asari... Reliance upon alien species for reproduction shows genetic weakness.
Geth, an annoyance. Limited utility.
Krogan, sterilized race. Potential wasted.
Salarian insufficient lifespan, fragile genetic structure.
Drell......... Useless. Insufficient numbers.
Quarian, considered due to cybernetic augmentation. Weakened immune system too debilitating.
Turian, you were considered... Too primitive.
On the other hand, this is why having a human protagonist is the best. Viable possibilities:
- Impressive genetic malleability.
- Aggressive factor useful if controlled.
- Great biotic potential.
- If emotional drives are subjugated.
- Impressive technical potential.
See, as humans, we are superior. Does everything make sense now?

I think I may have done this before in the thread but I've noticed how each of these points correspond to a primary characteristic of one of the main Mass Effect races.
At the most, they could potentially be functionally extinct, but this game clearly throws total extinction out the window.
Total extinction of a galactically widespread species is practically impossible for everyone except the Reapers. This is of course beside the point that the genophage wasn't designed to kill off the krogan, but to control their population growth.
Actually, it started in ME. Humanity might be The underdogs compared to the other species, but we've been in the galactic community for a short time. The achievments we achieved since the Mars' archive was exceptional, both in the militare field, political (no race achieved an embassy so fast). We co-developed one of the most advanced ships in the galaxy. Humanity saved the Citadel. We gained a Council Seat (another record) and even a all human Council in one end.Actually, that crap started in ME2.
And the trope is as old as the genre itself. No denying how lame it is though.

True, the first ME game did go that way, although I think it was more acceptable because it was counterbalanced by the moments in which humans are looked down and have to deal with it. Also, some dialogue options can paint Shepard as one who believes in waiting and improving instead of going all "give me, give me, we humans so special, we humans big shots despite being total newcomers to a centuries old civilization, you aliens are all racist!".
That said, I don't mind a human-only option in ME:A as much as I didn't like the human-only Hawke in DA2, possibly because Mass Effect has always been a human-centric story, while the first Dragon Age game gave us a taste of other viewpoints from the start (not that I wouldn't be happy if somehow we can play as a cool Turian or Asari hero in DA:A).

you are human.Humans are boring, sadly it's almost impossible for BioWare to make race options a reality in SP (well in a way that doesn't leave us with 'pick between a human who looks like a turian, human who looks like an asari, human who looks like a quarian' etc.) so we're stuck with lame humans.
and humans are responsible for the epic failures that are Cerberus and Kai Leng so humans can't really be that awesome
