But not everyone plays the way you do. Not everyone wants to complete the billion or so fetch quests, or expose every bit of black on every map, or collect every single shard or bottle or mosaic just to hear their companions talk.

For the record, I stopped accepting the requisition quests fairly early on, and I didn't make any effort to collect bottles or mosaic pieces. I did get all the shards, though, because that was fun.

Or, even if some did, some might not want to do that every single playthrough. Some people might want to do the 150hr+ completionist run the first playthrough, but not the second, or third, or even sixth. One can only go running around exploring the same scenery, collecting the same shards, cashing in on the same meaningless fetch quests so many times before it gets old.

My run was far from completionist.

But more importantly, some people might not want to hear all the banter on a single playthrough. Some might want to save some banter to be discovered on subsequent playthroughs.

You're making too many assumptions.

I mean, the areas are so freaking huge. You're already required to sink hours of your life wandering around large areas and complete random fetch quests (to gain Influence) to advance the story anyway.

You're really not. Unless maybe all you're trying to do is advance the story, but that seems a really odd way to play.

If you're not the kind who wants to explore further than the story or "main quest of the area" demands, you're not going to like it any better with the music off and/or the companions eerily quiet. It just makes it so those who already find huge open world exploration kinda boring find it unbearably boring.

Odd game to choose, then.

THAT SAID, I think a decent compromise would be--you said the banter is set to activate on a timer once every ten minutes, unless you're in battle or on a mount, right? If you're doing those things when the timer runs out, it just resets and you have to wait another ten minutes. Maybe when the timer runs out and party banter is set to activate but you're fighting or riding, instead of resetting maybe it could just hold it until you're done fighting or riding, and then the companions start talking. Won't make it so people who don't want a 150hr+ run (or people who don't want to wander aimlessly for hours on end) don't spend all game hearing nothing.

There's no need to compromise at all. The player should be given direct control over banter frequency.

Refused to accept requisitions as a matter of RP? Or is this a symptom of Stage 1 Completionism?

I found that it was useful to accept them; free Influence is always a good thing. But yeah, some of them are dopey.

It occurs to me that expecting to extract most of the content in a single run is a pretty recent concept. Doing all the Chapter 2 sidequests in BG2 was considered a bit odd, for instance, not least because the plot can break down when you do, depending on your PC.

I take the same team with me most of the time -- Dorian, Cassandra, Cole, sometimes switching Cassandra for Varric --  and it still takes me most of the game to hear almost all of the banter just from that limited grouping. One of the problems is also the fact that the banter more or less plays out in order, and also additional banter is unlocked after various missions or follower quests, so you are never really done with all of the banter.

I am a completionist and do get banter at the regular 15 min intervals. The banter system is not broken for me, but is still too infrequent. I wouldn't mind hearing some of the other banter in the game, but that means I have to sacrifice my preferred party makeup in order to do that because it takes the entire game to hear most of it.

I hope that in DA4 they reintroduce banter points. Say every time we had entered Val Royeux a banter would have triggered. It's free of combat so we don't need to worry about fights interrupting banter, it's a reasonable location to visit for the shops and a few minor quests later on, but it's not the main hub that Haven/Skyhold is.

Both, I suppose. I generally accepted the first one in each zone (which was almost always minerals I already had in my possession), but beyond that they weren't worth the Inquisitor's time (or cluttering up my journal - I would have accepted them if we had the power to edit our journal manually).

The change in expectation might be a consequence of games getting smaller.

With a bigger game like Inquisition, it makes no sense.
