and excuse the term: Masturbatory
I think the final scenes of DA:I with Trespasser DLC cemented this opinion of mine even more than the vanilla game did. Oh, don't get me wrong, I liked the main plot of Trespasser, but there is something, sometimes in regards to presentation that doesn't work for me, even though it tries quite hard to be about satisfying me: The sappy nature of how emotional scenes come across or wannabe movie-esque cutscene direction.
The final scene with X character in Trespasser (you know who I mean) has these beautiful (oh!) strings and it's all this wonderfully climactic and tragic ending scene, except it tries so hard it stumbles over itself. Halfway through the conversation with X I the high-pitch sound of violins was rubbing on my shoulders for more of my shivers but instead it started to hurt and my skin was about to peel off. I wanted it to stop already. Then it happens again with the hilarious end-of-Inquisition shot of the entire crew as they each take turns to walk out of the picture as if it's a play rather than something that truly happens in the world and then your romance partner walks in 2 seconds after walking out which is hilarious and awkward at the same time.
Furthermore this problem of "stop while the going is good" was also present in other key scenes, like getting set up in Skyhold in the original game.
It had a lot of beautiful buildup music and Inquisitor making a speech but as soon as s/he raises the sword and the music went from beautiful to even more beautiful by playing the bombastic main theme again it got masturbatory and went just a bit too far and ruined its previous elegance.
What I believe I'm questioning here is a matter of taste, and I'd argue they went with ill-fitting approach for some of the most important moments in DA:I and for that reason, for me personally, it fell flat on its face multiple times.
