Oh I know they are, but Zevran pretty much says it in your face he prefers women (even in a romance). I guess Dorian is such a big deal, since gay romances and characters got the short end of the stick for so long. You mentioned Liara - male gay romances were absent from ME 1 and 2. Juhani, the first lesbian character, was included in a 2003 game. We had to wait until 2012 for a gay character, and 2014 for a gay companion. And bi romances were included even in Jade Empire in 2005. So many BW games had bisexual characters, it's not really newsworthy anymore.

That's true, I forgot about Jade Empire ^_^ it's just weird that journalists ignore all bisexual characters, lesbian characters, and Steve Cortez also doesn't count for some reason. I mean it's not like BW made Dorian and everyone was like "whaaaat?! A gay character in a BioWare game?! Unheard of!" lol.

I think when they write gay, they mean male homosexual, not as a blanket term. In this case they are still forgetting about Cortez though. Again, lesbian and bi characters (especially women) are old news, gay men are a kind of novelty for Bioware. I'm not sure how the media response was earlier to LB characters. If you didn't pay attention, you could have missed some of them. (I didn't romance Sky on my first run, because I didn't know I had to be a total douche to both of the ladies to unlock him).

Sky: "Whoa, brosef! I saw you totally shut down those two babes! That started to give me a funny tingling! Care to investigate with me?!"

We've come a long way!

Zam spoke with Mr. Gaider about his change of positions and companies recently; you can read about it here;

If this means no more ****** agendas on my DA, then this should have happened sooner.

I think the only agendas David Gaider has are 'gather as many fan tears as possible' and 'be really snarky'. Patrick Weekes seems significantly less sarcastic, but he's at least as efficient at gathering fan tears.

There's a chance we will see more musical numbers under Weekes, but only if he can get them past Mike Laidlaw. The Creative Director seems to object to characters bursting spontaneously into song for some bizarre reason of his own.

If you paid any attention to the other developers, you'd see that this isn't likely to change.

Fare thee well, David. Thank you for all you have done for BioWare.

Yes, thank you for abandoning your IP you were presumably working on to jump to greener pastures.

That's interesting. I'm not sure Beamdog really had writers full time on staff? With his experience, it sounds like Beamdog is looking to position themselves in the same market as Obsidian, InExile and (name escapes me now, but the people who did Shadowrun HK/Dragonfall).

David Gaider had already left the Dragon Age team to move to the Sekrit New IP. The last thing he did any work on was Jaws of Hakkon, IIRC. Patrick Weekes had taken over as lead writer on DA by the time Trespasser came around.

While I'll always appreciate the amazing work Gaider did building Thedas, he's hardly been the only contributor. It's not his IP, it's BioWare's.

Harebrained Schemes! And yes, that seems to be what Beamdog are doing. I'll be interested to see what they make now they have Gaider on board. (Another expansion, this time for BG2? An actual Baldur's Gate 3? Another Infinity Engine game? Something D&D but in a different engine?)

I know they floated BG3 as an idea, but I'm not sure what the state of the license is with e.g. whoever now owns the D&D IP generally. Or with the Infinity Engine as an IP. I do expect that with DG as "Creative Director" they are setting themselves up for actually releasing rather than re-touching content. Quite aside from his work as a writer, DG has a decade (give or take) of experience managing AAA development. Even if he wasn't leading the project, he was presumably in the room on all (many?) the project management meetings.

Gotta think they have more in mind than re-mastering IWD 2 or something. I'm hoping they have a new IP of their own on the drawing board which DG is helping create.

Find out soon enough I guess.

Also I wonder if DG's stalkers have followed him there - the Cassandra looks like a man one,  and the poor chap looking for his lost Warden ( Who is hiding under the couch probably)... Maybe he'll get some new stalkers instead. Could be nice.

Wait, so the secret IP was not for another BioWare game?  Man this is too cerebral.  All this double talk is making me queasy.  But if that's the case, I rescind my earlier sentiment.  I was under the impression the secret IP was still under the BioWare banner.

David Gaider @davidgaider

Keep saying "we" when referring to BioWare. That's going to be a hard habit to break. :(

User

Perhaps some habits aren't meant to be broken. You will always be 'The Maker' to us. <3

User 2

The Maker abandoned his children, but perhaps through the Tweet of Light we can convince him to return one day.

--wait does... that make Patrick Andraste in this analogy? I may need more of that

David Gaider @davidgaider

I doubt it. @PatrickWeekes is not my bride, and he can't sing worth ****.

Patrick Weekes @PatrickWeekes

MY SINGING VOICE IS GREAT. Just because I'm not some callow karaoke BELTER...

The secret IP wasn't his. He worked on it after DA:I wrapped up and before he left. Other people have been working on it since before he joined and are still working on it after.

Good article...

“Trent Oster, cofounder of Beamdog, is someone I worked with at BioWare previously (on Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark). I ran into him at my gym, and after chatting a bit, that’s what set me down the path of considering Beamdog as a place I could go,” Gaider said.

So true about Oster and company. The Beamdog devs are compellingly cool dudes- no wonder that a simple chat at a gym hooked Gaider in. So wish I knew what he was working on there.

Well.. considering the huge ****storm that is arising around the new BG1 expansions and the horrible reviews that are popping out (see GOG for yourself) I think they should just leave BG saga alone once and for all, and start with their new fresh IP.

I'm just finishing "Stolen Throne" which Gaider wrote.  How much (what percentage) of Dragon Age Origins, DA2, and Inquisition is Gaider's brainchild versus others on the Dragon Age team?  Was there any feuding behind the scenes that compelled Gaider to leave?
