I didn't know about the elf names, that's really interesting. I wonder if she is heavily Catholic or was raised that way.

No idea. I'd say i know religion myself, but I didn't know a lot of that.

OTOH, she could be a Gundam fan. lol. They use lots of angel names too.

Also they've somehow made it buggier than it was. I got it to crash 5 minutes after creating a new character.

Taking it upon themselves to retcon characters when they've misinterpreted those characters in the first place hasn't gone down well either.

In short they've made several mistakes and then telling people who bought the game that they're wrong is the icing on the cake.

Only got to look at the new characters they've added to realize Ms Scott gets her writing influence from sitcoms! Click Neera - the new wild mage and she says "You rang" Uh yeah, no phones in Faerun or any where else in Forgotten Realms Ms Scott!

It's fun to watch though.

I hope DG hasn't burnt his bridges in BW because he might be wanting has old job back before too long

I can only hope. He's a million times the writer that Weekes is.

If this means no more ****** agendas on my DA, then this should have happened sooner.

It doesn't. You're not familiar with Patrick Weekes are you?

It amazes me that the mere existance of transsexual character in a small part of a videogame can cause the world to end.

A transexual character in a setting where switching genders is literally as easy as wearing a belt, no less!

That... doesn't change anything at all. She'd still be growing as a man and treated as a man until changing identity and/or sex. She'd still be picking a new name for herself.

Reasons?
At least for now i was not impressed by the story in DA when Gaider was the leader writer.

There's more to it than just that though.

- It's buggy, I have to play with AI turned off just to prevent constant CTD's

- Multiplay - an advertised feature of the EE doesn't work.

- Character rewrites because Ms Scott didn't like the originals.

They've agreed to fix the Minsc line and said they're working on bug fixes. If they're smart they'll get DG to run his eye of the transgender character and try to make it fit in instead of being a token character to trying to be a tick on a checklist. A lot of the game is text with little spoken dialogue so they shouldn't need to re-hire the VA to fix the mess they've made.

I've talked to more than one person who is playing it and more or less everyone has told me that the matter of rewritten characters is quite an exageration: according to them they were most fleshed out instead of being "rewritten", and their personalities were just deepened a bit. But everyone agrees that there isn't any change that could be seen as a contradiction with the characters portraited in both BG1 and BG2.

So I think that it's more an overreaction which was due to a not-very-good choice of words from MS Scott while she was replying to fans and perhaps a not very wise PR attitude from Beamdog folks.

About bugs and MP not working they were almost confirmed. But to be honest I don't see really anything new here: it has become an habit nowadays to release game whose current state is no more than a beta version, Not that I approve of it but not that could really justify that huge bash unless, of course, they wont' fix it.

From what i've read this is untrue. Lead writer Amber Scott (a self described "SJW") was unhappy with the way females were portrayed in the originals, and said she didn't think they would work for a 2016 audience, so she decided to "fix" them. Apparently both Jaheira's and Safana's entire personalities have been changed because god knows you can't have flawed female characters in 2016. Her interview with Kotaku and a few posts she made on the Beamdog forums suggest as much.

Yes, this is what I have read too. But on the other side I had also people who told me that Jaheira and Safana aren't so much different from their previous version. Therefore I think that everyone should either see for himself or choose what to believe. To be honest I don't think that Safana had that so great well estabilished personality, therefore if they were just going to deepener her a bit I don't find it so sacrilegious.

On the other side, as I have already stated I don't think that Ms Scott's attitude is going to help very much in towning down the discussion. She could just have said "You know, we found that some characters were a little bidimensional and not very fleshed out, so we decided to deepener their personality a bit" (which, according to my sources is what they actually did.) Instead she went out with something like "Safana in the original BG was just a sexual object inserted into the game for the pleasure of a certain audience, so we are going to fix that because we feel like doing it". Just a little more diplomacy in the PR department could surely benefit them.

Amber Scott sounds kickass. I'd never heard of Beamdog before Gaider left but his employment there and their attempts to make their games less sexist/more inclusive puts them on my radar. Love to see more companies following Biowares footsteps in regards to making gaming more friendly to minorities. I hope some of the speculation on this thread is correct and Beamdog puts out a new ip of their own.

I thought they had gone on record saying they wouldn't create their own IP but expand on existing ones (Forgotten realms, etc.)

I think there is a way to be progressive and inclusive but not broadcast it in a way that's antagonistic to players. That just causes backlash and makes the company seem less professional.

Ah, I'm hoping that since so many talented former BW employees are at BD that something bigger is in the works. If not, updating older games and making them less obnoxiously sexist/exclusive still makes me happy. I might have to give Baldurs Gate a whirl with this news.

I'm sure there is a way to marketing speak what they are doing to keep the mouthbreathers relatively calm but I'm enjoying the fact that the company isn't afraid to challenge the community. It's certainly put them on my radar as a company to support. I guess it remains to be seen whether the publicity they are getting is worth the trouble from their pissed off players.

Why would Beamdog want to be associated with mouth breathers that openly antagonize the LGBTQ as SJW's?

Should Beamdog appease the KKK as well?

Excellent point. They seem to be taking a stand for marginalized communities having a voice in their games and caused the bro brigade to come out in force and whine. The reaction isn't really unexpected. I just hope that the company gets enough good press among the social justice crowd to help their bottom line. I've seen several articles around feminist sites praising them so here's hoping.

I would definitely be interested in seeing what Gaider does now that he's there. But I would much rather have new material rather than rehashing existing games. So I do hope they branch out and away from BG.

There's a difference between trying to appease racists, sexists, homophobes, etc. and openly antagonizing customers. Of course they should not abandon their opinions or cave to criticism. But I think some people were upset by the "I don't care what you think, so there!" attitude from the writer rather than actual content. Again, not only is that counterproductive, but it's immature and pointless.

If they're going to taunt customers, they're going to have to be willing to deal with whiners.

You mean people who don't buy games to be passive aggressively lectured at, or called racists and bigots by in game characters? I.E. The vast majority of their audience?

Also there are many in the LGBTQ community that would be offended that you conflate them with SJWs.

I don't have a dog in this fight (I don't care at all about Baldur's Gate or anything in it), but I will say that all of the initial chatter around this issue that came from Beamdog devs (and specifically Amber Scott) came off in a way that I would describe as "needlessly antagonistic." I think that contributed to blowing up this issue way more than it otherwise would have.

You're right that Beamdog shouldn't have to cater to angry internet voices, but when you start a conversation by walking up to someone and punching them in the face, you can't really be that surprised when they punch back.

That said, their more recent rhetoric seems to have calmed down considerably.

The transgender npc drama  just plain sucks , there's some people who went on a riot just for this very reason , we all know this.

But if SJW and Gamergate could go on some other planet , and have fun with their silly war all by themselves , it would be great , thks.

I'm a woman and I don't give a crap if some 30 years old dudes wants their nostalgia fix with a bunch of sexy pixel female character.

Instead it seems those guys got 50 shades of "I'm a strong independant woman".

Same way if in 15 years someone remake DAO and change my whiny Alistair into a strong independant man who needs no one because boo bad stereotype against men I would go " Are you kidding me!???!".

At this rate everything will be politically correct and will be so bored out of our skull , we'll waste our time on some childish internet war instead of playing games.
