I remember watching '6 feet under' with male friends and watching them cringe at the same sex kissing when first exposed to it. Now, most of them don't act shocked when seeing it. It's been normalized and that's good. I hope the same can happen for transgender people. I think it will.

I, for one, would still cringe.. just because it's not my thing (not that I've seen that show though. I heard it's good).

But I know gay people who would cringe at some straight things. :P Ironically, I understand.. And I appreciate this honesty. So long as each side doesn't de-humanize the other, it works out.

I think that's a big problem of the "conversation" now.. where people are expected to play along, not be honest, and not actually be themselves.. to celebrate things they don't care about. Else they're looked at as bad people. It's only going to build up resentment.

Same sex kissing was weird when I first saw it but I grew up in the Southeast US in a fundamentalist Christian family. Getting out of that environment and being exposed to people different than me helped me overcome my discomfort and view same sex couples as normal. Recognizing and owning your discomfort is healthy, IMO. I just fight back against those that rationalize their discomfort and use it as a reason to keep marginalized people hidden and out of "their" entertainment.

Eta: 6 feet under is a great show!

BG was brilliant. BG2 was still really good. NWN was brilliant. And I wasn't even finished those games when KotOR came out (a game I wasn't initially interested in because it was an XBox exclusive, and I'm exclusively a PC gamer). And KotOR wasn't bad, and it was a really interesting new take on the blank slate protagonist.

If a game is ever going to give my character a background I, the player, don't know about KoTOR is the only way to do it. Obsidian's KoTOR 2 was a complete failure in that regard.

Jade Empire is less action-y than DAI.

Jase Empire requires that we give combat commands in real time. It is the only BioWare RPG where that is true.

ME and KotOR require we give movement commands in real time, but not combat commands.

The only DAI command that needs to be given in real time is jumping. Everything else can be done while paused. Keep in mind also that DAI's pause feature behaves very differently with KBM enabled.

100% agree. Torment does basically the same thing.

But KotOR2 was a disaster in that respect.

I think Torment is even more metaphysical than that one (arguably each iteration of the Nameless One was more akin to a reincarnation, with some accompanying error in retrieving the memory files).

KoTOR 2's "solution" made the problem worse. The idea was to play the scene out as it became relevant - but you can't just have the seminal moments of the past of my character show up mid-way through the game. The moment that stands out to me is that after you escape Paragus, you have a flashback to the reason you left to join the war in the first place. That's highly relevant information - it can't just come up after the prologue.

Hmm, I was considering buying the EE stuff, but giving money to cater to GG leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. Don't think I can actually do it.

(though anyone crying "censorship" is delusional about what the word means)

Not entirely, he got a promotion to Creative Director, a position he probably wouldn't have got any time soon at BW.

Also working on lower budget games can mean trying different things with game design instead of being restricted to whatever is popular at the time.

Or just to avoid being dictated to by EA.

He might not say it, but it's exactly why he left. And why Hudson left too. These guys can't enact their own visions properly. They might be content with the final result, but neither of their last games are what they planned... so why would they want to go through any of it again.

Maybe Beamdog will end up doing some silly sjw thing or be too insular for their own good, but at least they'll be doing what they want.

It's the powers of the obvious.

He barely could bring himself to want to talk about what happened to DA2. Even after DAI was released, he was still upset. And expressed surprise that DAI got finished. I'm sure he had a problem with fans too. Not just EA. Jen Hepler was his choice to take over, but she pretty much got chased away.

And now he's gone. It doesn't take a mindreader to figure it out.

In any case, I'm happy for him. Maybe we can agree on that.

I don't think it's actually unlikely that Gaider felt BioWare had become too restrictive for him, I just think it's asinine to make assumptions about the reasons for his decision when he hasn't made a statement about it. I mean, maybe he left because Lukas Kristjanson spent seventeen years stealing his lunch out of the break room fridge and he just couldn't take it any longer.

Indeed - I look forward to whatever Beamdog make on his watch (especially since I've enjoyed Siege of Dragonspear so far.)

Just out of curiosity, where/when did he express surprise that DAI got finished? I don't remember hearing about that, nor specifically about him being upset with the released product. I know he had talked about how a lot of the DA2 plans were rushed or canceled and he mourns the cancellation of the final DLC.

I don't think he worked on SoD. It was nearly finished by the time he joined, and I thought it wasn't yet announced what new game he'll be working on with them.

Lukas? Nah, never! :P

I think it's too easy to blame EA.

It was on his blog. It wasn't negative or anything. It was just a subtle thing he said that made me think he was losing faith in this process.

Oh, he didn't. I just mean that it shows they've got the capacity to produce good original content, and I look forward to seeing what they do next now that they've got Gaider as well.

I really do hope they do a new IP with him. He is good at world building and creating new characters. I think Beamdog has been hesitant to branch out into new IP rather than working on existing ones, but maybe Gaider will help change that.

TBH I'd love to see Gaider and Avellone work together on something. Gaider for world building and characters, Avellone for overall story and going against tired tropes.

I'd just like them to make another D&D game. It's still a better world than this one.

D&D ruleset maybe, but I'm pretty tired of the Forgotten Realms setting. Maybe go for Planescape again, or Dark Sun. Something that's not quite so generic fantasy as FR, but also with extremely detailed politics and characters that requires reading a lot of the tie-in books.

Well, there's Eberron. It hasn't been used in games, except that one mmo. It's a little steampunky (not exactly) with less magic.

I'd enjoy that from the little I know on the setting.

As a kid growing up, I loved the Dragonlance setting. Never really got a decent game in that universe though. I know there were a couple of gold box games, but something new in that setting, I'd go for without thinking twice.

Hell I still get a kick out of BG2 when encountering those characters in that plane from the DL universe. LOL

Finished SoD finally, had re-do a few areas due to quest bugs. I might go through it again when they've fully patched it and see how the experience changes. I think coming to that from a new playthrough of PoE + its expansions, the writing and dialogue choices in PoE are so much better than in SoD, SoD looks very amateurish in comparison.

One positive thing I will say about SoD is the soundtrack was fan-bloody-tastic. Am considering getting it as they have it up for sale now.

Next up bringing my halfing assassin through BG2.

Anyway I'm still curious to see what project they've got DG heading up. If I think it's my thing, I'll get it, if not, I'll go do something else instead.

Dafuq he left BW and went to a no-name studio? Was there some drama at Bioware it something? That would explain the ME4 delays.
