That new IP seems to be making everyone want to quit their job. At least the important people. First the Casey the Direct of the "new ip" leaves Bioware instead of finishing it. Then it's new lead writer leaves Bioware instead of finishing it. Who will be next?

Patrick Weekes: Meh. I can handle the new IP. (becomes new lead writer)

6 months later, Patrick Weekes leaves Bioware. Uttering the words "Don't work on that new IP! Don't work on that new IP!" before leaving the company.

Once you enter then "new IP" there's no going back.

Au revoir Mr Gaider!

Thanks for all your awesome characters and stories.

I remember sending a PM to you, on the old BSN forum,  and having, a few weeks after, an answer from you to my reaction on the Stolen Throne + the Calling. I know you enjoy creating worlds and seing people react to them. I'm sure you'll keep doing great!

I just heard:( I actually had to come onto the forum for this.

I know Weekes took over DA, but ouch.

C'mon!  Look at it.

DA:I Act 1 was clearly written for Hawke as is the end of act 1 reveal, it makes no sense with cookie cutter Inquisitor.  Yeah, I loved the game, but Gaider worked for this and EA blew it.

They sliced a year of DA2 (EA), then had to give a year extension to Inquisition for character creation of races.

I hate that Gaider left BioWare, but did he really leave BIoWare or leave EA?

Perhaps the rumours about Gaider joining Obsidian might be true. Funny if so, Pillars was one of the games/series I was talking about.

If this was true I would just about die of happiness. Gaider Unleashed (like back in the BG2 days), I would be very happy to see.

Well wherever David Gaider goes I hope he keeps writing.

So Long and Thanks for All the Dragon Age.

Looking forward to whatever you produce next.

Some people will follow you by name, I'll admit, I'm that nerd.  You're a great lead writer.

Most people will see your shiny new product, have never heard of you, and buy whatever it is off the shelf.

Good luck, man.

Hmmm hope that peep is right about Obsidian.  Who doesn't like a follow your dreams post-it?

Which reminds me under deadline.  I'm not famous with a fan following.  I respond to a whip and you owe me 20k words when I get back for perusal...

They feared his power.

Feared his power so much they banished him to the Deep Roads.

There, David Gaider will dwell....and conspire.

Conspire to sometime return AND CONQUER THEDAS.

What?   NO!!

I'm still not over him leaving DA.  And now this!

I REALLY hope he wrote a character or two for the new IP before he left.

Thank you, Mr. Gaider, for all the wonderful characters you wrote. You were responsible for all my favorite friendship arcs, most of my favorite moments of dialogue, and many of the moments that I found the most emotional in Boware games. You inspire me to write and to play, and I'm grateful for all the times you broke my heart a little with your stories.

Me too. It's such miserable news. I just hope he keeps writing for games.

This new IP reminds me a lot of the controversy and drama surrounding Xenosaga Episode II wherein most if not all of the original Xenogears/Saga EP I staff left en masse.

This thread is hilarious.  You'd think the poor guy had died.

We don't really know why he is leaving, so I just wish him well and hope it's for a better opportunity, financially and professionally.  I can say that it's clear Bioware is nothing like it was, and frankly has ceased to exist.  Where it once created amazing worlds that pushed the boundaries of storytelling within a limited medium, it now creates games that are pretty to look at but are intellectually devoid.  Fortunately, intelligent games have had a resurgence in the last couple of years, so hopefully David Gaider has found a place where his talents will be appreciated.

That would be great. Can't wait for romance in Pillars 2. There were really none in Pillars.

I think Pillar of Eternity is so boring and dull. I wish DG can work in a better product.

I don't think his opinion is any less valid than anyone else's.  There are quite a lot of people who feel that way.  Most of them just don't bring it up or want to crap on this thread with all of that.  I have heard that view from random people I happened to bump into the MP that didn't post here or know anything about the details of the game/writers.

I don't think people should dump on the guy in his farewell thread.  I think that subject has been discussed a lot anyways.  I don't have anything to say on the matter (that I haven't already said in the past) other than responses like that are not trolling or bait, but rather a consistent viewpoint/opinion.

This is kinda sad. Bioware's veteran staff is dropping like flies :(

Still leaves me hopeful that the company will eventually live on in new blood. I just hope Patrick Weekes and the rest can stay on board for some more time.

That said, 17 years is a long time and every new game development is probably a lot of uphill and downhill and lots of stress. I can totally understand if DGaider was ready to do something different. At least, I hope that's the truth behind this and not something serious like he was in disagreements or ill or something.

I'm just hoping there wasn't some sudden health issue.  :(

With the way he makes it sound so sad, this is what I thought too. Hopefully he's not sick or anything.

Based on the tone of the announcement - and DG's later reference to unemployment - I find myself being skeptical that this was as voluntary as pitched.

You may well be right, but on the other hand - he wouldn't be the first person that simply decided they needed a break and took the leap without anything to land on.  The "for a bit" part of his reference to unemployment seemed quite emphatic.  The weeping and drunkeness could simply have been him celebrating and commiserating with - now - former colleagues.  Leaving a company you played a not-insignificant part in for 17 years is likely to evoke all manner of emotional responses.

He might simply have something lined up for next month, or the month after and is still technically unemployed.  "Frictional Unemployment" I believe is the term I was taught in business school.

Of course, it could be a combination of exactly as pitched and not.  He may have decided to leave without anything to go after discovering he didn't like the way things were heading in the new IP or in Bioware in general and was told, 'get on board, or get off'.

Regardless, as others have said - wish him well.
