Warriors have guard, mages have barriers. What's the best way to build up a rogues' defense?

Is that for rogues? I looked it up and it only gave me an ability for mages and an upgrade for horn of valor.

Fortifying Blast is the Horn of Valor upgrade that grants all party members guard regardless of their class.

Yes i know. But only warriors can cast it. I was referring to something in one of the rogue ability trees. Something i wouldn't have to rely on  another team member to use.

Stealth to drop aggro. Tempests can use flask of frost.

You can always craft guard on hit masterworks if you like, but that always seems to be a waste of masterwork to me. On my first PT as a dw assassin, I put two different hidden blades on my daggers because I heard you like hidden blades so I put hidden blades on your hidden blades so you can hidden blades while you hidden blades.

Toxic cloud and just evading everything. Also the leeching poison upgrade is nice in extended engagements.

Tempest is the most defensive specialty.

Rogues don't need defense, because they should be your primary offensive weapon. Well, okay, they may need some defense before Skyhold, but after that enemies shouldn't live long enough to land a hit on a rogue.

That said, I'll add to all of the excellent suggestions above Caltrops/Tread Lightly as a good defensive ability.

Also, for an Archer, Leaping Shot/Shot From The Shadows gives you two forms of defense -- stealth to break aggro and distance to avoid melee -- while being primarily an offensive ability!

What about Artificer?

Artificer has three actives with defensive capability, to Tempest's one (FoFr) and a quarter (FoL/Stormrage - only defensive against close melee combat). One of the Artificer abilities is purely defensive, the others have offensive value as well.

Thanks for all of the answers. This is the first time playing as a rogue and i guess old habits die hard. I'm so used to playing as a warrior that i'm an archer who tends to shoot right up close. I've always built my teams around defense/survivability.

Personally. I use the artificer for 3 reasons only. Passives, ult and elemental bombs.

The other abilities just aren't worth being on your bars. However, in order to properly play a tempest, you need all three potions to function. All 3 have a defensive use so that's why I prefer a tempest over artificer when it comes to defense. The icing on the cake is that your ult also makes you untargetable.

Of course, raw power goes to artificers however.

I had to re-read the descriptions of all flasks to see this. I had missed that FoF has a defensive aspect. I ran a DW Tempest and had no idea my FoF was giving me any protection!

In general, there are many ways to defend with a rogue. +5 guard on hit, upgraded poison to recoup 5% health on hit, and the great examples above will help. However, damage avoidance with positioning and tactics is usually a better option.

When I played JoH on nightmare, Varric had a high survivability rate with the +5 guard, Fallback Plan, and Stealth. This preceded the patch that includes OP Fortifying Blast. The same strategy can be used for the Inquisitor, only you're replacing the AI's brain dead decisions with smart moves. Stealth/Leaping Shot spam (if using an archer) will end threats sooner rather than later. And if you're flanking, you may be ignored entirely.

Because of how flanking damage works, "melee" archery is actually a valid playstyle. If you watch speed kills, you'll notice a lot of them are archers practically spooning their target. Once you get comfortable stacking more offense, you can pump some insane numbers out of point-blank shooting.
