It's only 26 days into the year, so it will be hard to say that for sure, not until after E3 at least.  But out of the list of known games, I'd say Deus Ex, Dishonored 2, and Far Cry Primal probably stand the best chance.  That's obviously going to change the closer we get to 2017 though.

LMAO at people thinking Andromeda will make 2016.  It's gonna get delayed, people.

Dark Souls series lacks the broad appeal, and it's not really intended to be accessible for everyone. It's gonna be a hard game with high difficulty, so a lot of hardcore gamers would be into it. The story is pretty bad though, it's never the focus. It only has the gameplay to fallback on. I don't see it as a serious contender.

The Souls games have sold millions and millions of copies. Hell, Bloodborne won a bunch of GOTY awards last year. And the story in Souls games are fine.

I have played it and I still don't understand why people go crazy for the Uncharted series, to me it is a pretty standard linear 3rd person action game that focuses more on cinematic presentation and scripted set pieces than doing anything interesting with the gameplay.

Did you play all 3?

Uncharted 2 won over 200 GOTY awards. The gameplay gets more diverse as the series goes on. The first Uncharted is very linear, boring, and my least favorite. But Uncharted 2 and 3 are tons of fun.

I realize it's a 3rd person cover shooter that has a great story and awesome set pieces..... but I find it to be one of my favorite franchises after Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

One might argue that translating Hollywood action sequences into playable form is, in fact, doing something interesting with the gameplay. Especially since no game had really done it well before Uncharted 2 and few games have done it well since.

Persona 5

The Division

Uncharted 4

Dishonored 2

Dark Souls 3

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Ni No Kuni II: Revenant King

No Mans Sky

I'm sure there are more.

Not bad.

Although out of those games I am honestly only thinking No Mans Sky will be a major contender in the end, but even then it might be too niche.

A lot of people keep mentioning Divinity, Tides of Numenera, Star Citizen and the like...they may be good games, but not a GOTY candidate considering how the gaming world works. Truth be told, many of those kickstarter games are very niche in the end; remember that awards tend to go for mass appeal in a broad fashion.

To be fair, OP also asked what we were most looking forward to.

I think No Man's Sky is going to disappoint a lot of people, personally. I think it'll be an interesting proof of concept, but ultimately akin to a lego building simulator.

No way Ni No Kuni 2 wins a significant amount of GOTY awards. JRPGs not named Final Fantasy don't stand a chance in the West and never have.

I'm a bit more optimistic for No Mans Sky. If nothing else it will get the critical darling status of the year and be in the conversation. It may not win, but it will be up there.

It's a very minecraft mentality game. Something I personally like from time to time.

Ni No Kuni is too niche, Deus Ex and Persona 5 are likely going to be the rival RPGs for the year to Andromeda when it comes to bigger AAA titles.

And honestly, out of those kickstarter titles none of them really interest me. I thought Divinity: Original Sin is way overrated, so no interest in the sequel, and InXile didn't impress me with Wasteland 2, unlike Obsidian who I felt did a great job with Pillars of Eternity.

Plus, Numenera is not going to be anything like Torment, I wish they would stop trying to link them as a series, that sort of marketing annoys me.

Yes, what upcoming games in development can rival another upcoming game in development for GOTY.  <_<

No Man's Sky, The Last Guardian, Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Sea of Thieves, Below.

I'd throw Recore in there based on potential alone, but we have yet to see any gameplay.

With modern Inafune's company co-producing that, color me skeptical.

Yes!  I found uncharted 2 and 3 to be like playing a 12 hour really solid blockbuster action movie instead of watching one. I love the series so far.  I hope Thieves End doesn't mean the end of that style of game for them.

I am yet to see a console exclusive that made me really regret not having a console, most of the types of games I like are on PC.

There are enough exclusives that I love that I inevitably get every console. Just rounded out the set for this gen with my xboxone.

Honestly I haven't seen a game other than ME:A and maybe the console version of Gone Home (which I don't if that counts due to it being a port of what a 3 year old game) that is coming out in 2016 that I even want to look at a trailer for much less buy and/or play. Now of course since I don't follow game news regularly anymore that might change (and FTR I did just put a PS4 in layaway yesterday); but for right now however it's currently the single-player story based DLC for my Xbox One games like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Fallout 4.

Anything that isn't a David Cage game.

I'd say Deus Ex, Uncharted 4, Dishonored 2 and maybe Quantum Break.

Also, Blood and Wine.

Blood and Wine is an expansion DLC.  Does such even qualify for the competition?

If you're asking whether an expansion can win GOTY, well, I don't know the answer to that (probably not though).

I simply made a list of games released in 2016 that will be better than ME:A.

Yes, I'm saying an expansion will be better than ME:A.

Destiny: The Taken King ended up on many Game Informer editor's list for Game of the Year. I didn't think it was fair. But whatever.

Telltale's Batman

I wonder if it is too much to hope for that the Joker will not be a prominent character because I am kind of hoping for other characters to have some time without him being the man behind it all or having a major focus. Batman has plenty of interesting villains so I do not think the plot always need to fall back on the Joker.

I think I might like it a lot if the Telltale series has different villains each episode.
