"Only if a second squadmate follows him around whilst playing a tuba."  Really you call that civil? I'll beg to differ. I think they are ill-suited for combat too but there is no need to be mean like that. We could still have one on the ship.

I call it hilarious.

There are plenty of fit, healthy, fat people. Strongest woman in America, Sarah Robles, is fat. Myself, I'd love to see a bad-ass fat character that isn't just the butt of everyone's jokes. Or constantly eating. Or any of the other fat stereotypes that are always portrayed in the media.

(Oh, also, being in shape does not inherently equal 'healthy')

She's ridiculously strong, but she isn't fit. All powerlifters are on the obese side. It's sort of like Sumo wrestlers.

You're right though that being in shape doesn't automatically equal healthy.

if you train for a marathon you can run a marathon. it's that simple. Doesn't matter if you're thin or overweight.

And again, not everyone in your Squad has to be the hard ass special ops recon uber Marine type of guy. Who knows what will go on on the Ark but I'm sure it's not gonna be filled with 100% military.

Your weight does matter if you're going to run a marathon and actually finish well, without walking a portion of it. You're right that training could prepare a person, but then if an overweight person was seriously training to run a marathon they'd end up losing weight.

I agree about the Ark, but the protagonist and their squad are going to be doing similar sorts of activities as military personnel, even if they aren't military personnel themselves. Its worth noting that there are also physical fitness requirements for being an astronaut. The protagonist or a squadmate being obese would stretch suspension of disbelief a bit.

That isn't to say that people can't ask for obese squadmates or obese options for the player character in the CC, but I think that argument has to made on the basis of representation being more important than realism. I'd disagree, but I'd understand that viewpoint. Any argument that an obese squadmate or protagonist would not be far-fetched however, I think has less weight behind it. It's just a reality that some jobs can't be performed adequately unless you have some degree of physical fitness.

I wonder what possessed them to put those Volus in the MP, I mean they are funny enough, but srsly...

The only way I can see a Volus fighting effectively is from inside a Mech / Power armor.

Actually part of it is not a myth. When I was 14 I grew a lot in a year and was 6ft from previous years 5'6 and while I was skinny(had bones sticking out pretty much everywhere) I weighed 180lbs.

I'm not sure if it was mentioned already. But with medical science in ME, humans are able to live to what 120? I think it's a safe assumption, that in the 2100s, people also are less fat or not at all.

Don't mock Volus combat abilities. They can punch you in the nuts so hard that your head explodes.

Also, I have to defend their honour (at least as long as we're sharing an embassy.)

And by the time you're ready for the marathon and can actually run it, chances are you're not fat anymore. I have never seen somebody coming in among the first who is fat.

Seriously.

i understand not wanting obesity to equal comic relief, but I don't understand what else is going on here.

I will admit some of your earlier stuff in this thread was funny, but when you start to degrade peoples values of self worth, joke or no, you are crossing the line.
