I think the Volus were meant to be funny.. I could have sworn Hudson said that.

Too bad he didn't know his own sick fanbase wanted to romance it.

Holy hell I can't believe this thread is still going.

And I also can't believe that BioWare is probably going to wind up kowtowing to nonsense like this.

Eh, probably not. That said, I think that a wider variety of body types, including those that are heavy set, could stand to be included somewhere in the game, such as random civilians that don't really take part in combat, and older people. If anything, I would like to see them make less muscular guys here and there. I had to turn my brain off a bit with Joker, since he had more a case of brolic than Vrolik's syndrome.

Most human combatants in Mass Effect were either soldiers or some kind of person with quasi-military experience. I say this as a heavy man myself -- the military has physical fitness requirements and combat can be very demanding. Ole' Fatty wouldn't survive amongst a team of the galaxy's best soldiers and that's the truth. Maybe it's not impossible, but it'd be highly unlikely and unrealistic. Now I wouldn't mind seeing some fat NPCs, but a fat squadmate isn't likely to happen.

EDIT: It's also worth noting that there are different requirements for different branches of the military. Plus, without the Mako, there's a LOT of running involved in Mass Effect. How you could even manage to be fat doing a constant jog in full gear is beyond me.

I already got the background covered: (feel free to use this Biower)

Initially, candidates eat for more than 20 hours per day, leading small buffet raids through hostile terrain with little sleep. Trainees who do well are awarded an internal designation of N1 and are invited to return. Subsequent courses - N2 through N6 - are often held off-planet and include instruction in zero-G snacking, military deep frying, jetpack barbeque, combat baking, gastronomics, and frontline catering for human and alien biology.

The highest grade of training, N6, provides actual eating competitions throughout the galaxy. If the trainee survives these scenarios in "admirable and effective fashion," he or she finally receives the coveted N7 designation.

I appreciate the honesty. I've experienced both types of weights. There isn't a chance I'd make a good soldier when I was heavy. And I wasn't about to live in some fantasy land, where I imagined that I could... :P

I would love to see more male and female characters with smaller or larger build and muscles depending on their roles. More variation among the alien species. But I'm not sure why people are against this... Bioware have played with body type diversity in their games. I do like the distribution in SWTOR with male and female body types since everyone don't look the same even though their face preset can be repetitive.

I use all available female body type and honestly they really weren't all that bad.

7SGraAdl.jpg

Male body type 1 (thin) and body type 4 ('big boned-fat') are probably the most noticeable among the NPCs and people rarely use them for their toons anyway.  We always make fun of Darth Baras and.... after five years, Talos still look like a twig. Dr Lokin is probably the most impressive because he could turn into Rakghoul .

In Dragon Age, while human body types look the same but there's elves, qunari and dwarves.

But if its an NPC inside the ship, why not?

Diversity is one thing. Promoting mediocrity is another. Or rather, saying it is as good as anything else.

There is only one group left that I practically worship. Astronauts. But then you mix in soldiers and it's over the top. Not to say this game has astronauts, but it was clearly inspired by them. Not everyone can do it. Or even a fraction of it. But on sci-fi level, it's even more ridiculous.

I'd only approve of a fat crew member if that person's theme was Lindermann's Fat and it plays every time that person is on screen.

Much of human physiology depends on gravity. You'll lose a lot of muscle mass if you spend too long in low gravity, you need diet and exercise and hormone supplements and space travel are guaranteed to wreck your endocrine system (very interesting reading too) and even living and growing up in low gravity conditions would affect your body in some ways (kinda like tall and long limbs Belters in the Expanse). Which is why Joker having the exact same muscular body mass as any average person despite his condition is strange, I actually thought he should look more like Sam Worthington in Avatar.

They did enough by introducing incurable disease and genetic diseases but to actually show everything with a touch more realism... you'd think, people would have more creative control over their fictional CGI world.

Space travel probably doesn't lend itself well to carrying a spare tyre, but if we have much more of societies than a double figure "elite" in space we can afford to have a few slightly bigger people in there.

That isn't true at all.

A big person might have physical strength, like powerlifters or sumo wrestlers for example, but they aren't going to have the stamina of someone built like a swimmer or a marathon runner.

I don't mind seeing bigger people.. or that they exist. But what would they do.. and why would they be just as good as a fit person? That's bullshit.

As for gravity, these ships simulate it.. and I'm sure all the inhabited planets are similar to earth.

They cured obesity in 2137.

I'm assuming they were able to do that by genetically modifying human DNA and birthing them from test tube and being "born" as adults as well.

Or that's how I explain the lack of children in ME anyways.

But on the topic, there are people of "girth " that are still fit. Some people just won't ever be slim.

And on BMI, that rating his a joke. The Rock's BMI rating declares him as obese. Lol

Out of curiosity I just checked his out, and he comes out as slightly overweight but not obese.

He's obviously fit, so its not really accurate in his case. There are always going to be exceptions, but generally speaking a person's BMI is a good indicator of their level of fitness and whether they're overweight or underweight for their height.

I posted about BMI because it was suggested that Shep was about 6'2 and 300 to 350 lbs for males, and 5'10 and 200 lbs for females. That would definitely put Male Shep well within the obese range and Fem Shep a bit overweight.

The Rock for example is 6'5 and 260 lbs, which would put Male Shep at 3 inches shorter but 40 to 90 lbs heavier. Gina Carano, who looks to be much more muscular than Fem Shep, is 5'8 and 145 lbs. Fem Shep would would be 2 inches taller but 60 lbs heavier. Male Shep would be fat and Fem Shep would be a little on the chunky side, if that were the case.

Sometimes people who are big doesn't necessarily mean they're that way by choice. Endocrine disorders sometimes manifest in obesity and weight gain for examples Cushing's syndrome, hypothalamic disorders and hyperthyroidism  and even exocrine cancers could aggregated further by space flight. And it doesn't look like anyone could afford advanced medical treatment and there's still class disparity especially in ME2.

I don't think the lore detail much about artificial gravity induced by mass effect fields and there's a lot more space magic in here than actual science. I notice a lot of human colonies also includes variable surface gravity and as for  starships or space station, I doubt the gravity are evenly distributed. I suspect there were areas that have lumpy gravity and doubtfully it was comfortable for everyone.

Either way, I don't actually mind seeing large people in the game or whether they're battle ready or not. And I seriously thought James lumpy shoulder is fat.

Doesn't Shepard have some reinforced bones and such on account of being a cyborg? I remember all sorts of upgrades that sounded like that in ME2 or 3.
