So the distance between milky way and andromeda is 2.537 million light years or 780 kiloparsecs from earth give or take. With FTL travel it will take approximately from earth 2.54 million years to reach, now from let's say our ark inhabitants perspective it would seem much shorter of a distance. Now with FTL the aging process would be slower amongst other things(Neil degrassee tyson speaks about this) but even so several lifetimes onboard the ark would have had to transpire. Meaning as with me1 upon starting a new game you can choose your background, what is the history aboard the ark? What background history will they have? Spacer, spacer or spacer? What monumental triumph led you on the path of greatness? There's no akuze so what, you stopped cerberus from taking over the ark? Joined the a-sec? Some krogan saw a space fish and decided to space walk in attempt to eat it but you saved him and the ship from certain doom?

How exactly do you think they approach this or will they just go "uuuh, space magic, yeah space magic."? Depending on the background you chose upon starting a new game the dialogue and how people saw you varied.

I'm genuinely interested in how they will approach this

With Mass Effect(if you can have it go indefinitely) we would be able to reach in 579.2237 to 463.3790 years since our ships go 12-15 light years per day. If we are using a Reaper Mass Effect drive, we would reach Andromeda in 231.6895 years since they go 30 light years per day.

We'll probably use stasis pods for that trip, so have a past that involves the Milky Way. That backstory will probably be why we are on the ship, just like Shepard with the Normandy.

I would assume either new tech will make the trip much faster or instantaneous, or we'll be in stasis the whole time.

So it would be just like the quarians  it would be  several generations later after the exodus form the milky wave.

I'd expect ark residents to be in cryo stasis personally.
If the game kicks off immediately you could have similar origins
If it kicks off years after arrival in andromeda you could definitely have colonist/spacer options.

Ooh! I'd never really considered this as an option but I like it.

Origin stories...

Duct rat: as a child you spent most of your time exploring the endless areas of the arc, while exploring, you learned how to tinker with security doors, sneak past people, and unlock hatches. The crew eventually found out about you and descide to put your skill to good use. When you reached adulthood, the captain offered you a position in the Pathfinders and gave you authority over an team of experts.

(Plus to tech)

Rogue: Your mother was an engineer in one of the hanger bays on the arc. During a mishap, she was exposed to element zero, which gave you biotic abilities when you were born. A year ago you joined a crew mutiny that ultimately failed. Faced with being exiled from the ship, the captain offered you a pardon because biotics are rare on the ship. This pardon came at a price as you were required to join the Pathfinders.

(Plus to biotics)

Duelist: Once a elite soldier in the military, you were dishonorably discharged and sent to the brig, where you spent time fighting your cell-mates to pass the time. Because you are known for being a survivalist, you were approached by the captain who offered to reduce your sentence and or parole you if join the Pathfinders.

(Plus to warrior)

I just made these up.
