Imagine you found the most beautiful thing you have ever seen;

In phase one, you enjoyably spend much time getting this person to notice you in a favorable light,

In phase two, you spend even more time courting this person and joyously begin dating,

And in phase three, after many delicious moments together, leading up to when you finally get to consummate your relationship, the most beautiful thing you have spent so much time with turns ugly, reveals it is disease ridden, and asks you to leave.

Was the journey fun? Was it worth it?

If you know someone that has the games, see if he/she will let you borrow the games to play to see if ME would be something you like and would purchase.

I'd say definitely give it a go. There is a lot wrong with the trilogy even before you get to the ending but it's mainly pointed out so much because all three games are still awesome. I guess most critics (me included) would never bother to complain so much if they were not and I'd say they offer some of the best experiences I have ever had with playing video games.

Go for it and then headcanon your own ending.

Honestly, the ending is such a plot-hole filled ditch that any made-up ending would be just as valid as the "canon" ones.

MEHEM is also a well-made alternative to the ME3 ending.

OP, I would like to suggest that one of the key reasons to play this trilogy is because it makes the player care. Not many games achieve that. IMHO the ending hurts mostly because one does not want the adventure to end. Having said that, I would not ever want to play it again without MEHEM installed.

I am one of the odd ones who came to the party late and started with ME3. Not a bad way to do things, but so much was confusing that of course, I just had to go back and play the others once I was hooked. I've just finished my fifth run through the trilogy and it doesn't get old; there is nothing else quite like it. Perhaps you might love it as much as well.

I originally started with Mass Effect 2 because at the time Mass Effect wasn't out on Ps3 yet.

ME3's ending (Paragon wise, good ending not the destroy ending) is the most beautiful part of the game...the people who said they hate it,is only because they just unable to see the bigger picture. Like a child walking in a grown man's shoes, when he couldn't fit in them,he whines and whines about the shoes being too big instead of his feet are simply not big enough......hopefully these player haters fits in eventually,if they don't,who cares... ME3's ending stands out of almost any other video games, the people that don't get it just don't know the meaning of "sacrifice for better good"...when Miranda,Mordin,Kaidan/Ashley sacrificed their lives for the better good of the galaxy, people were not whining as much, but when it's Shepard's turn,no no no no no....we must whine and whine and whine on our own about our own selfishness...They just couldn't see the essence of "selflessness" this game and BioWare trying to deliver...anyway,I couldn't care less nor does BioWare clearly. Back to your question. Like I said before, you must try it for yourself,if you just listen to what everybody tells you to do,then you'll get a lot of strings attached to your mind and pulling you, that you can't make your own decisions anymore, and that would be so sad...so,be your own boss! Good luck and enjoy the game...hopefully  ;)

Sense you can buy the trilogy, and play through all three in a week or two, the ending may not bother you as much.

How good is MEHEM? i know it changes the ending, but I want to know is it really smooth and no bugs for the ending?

I used MEHEM, and it was a breeze to install, and I truly enjoyed it, I saw no real hiccups or problems with it.. It is a permanent addition to my ME3 now, I wish to never see that other heart breaking ending ever again.

This series is easily one of the best single player options out there. The replay value is high as well. As with most RPG's there are aspects that feel tedious at times but overall the trilogy is paced well.

There is no problem with the ending, the problem is that the game is so engaging that people were too invested in the outcomes they dreamed up before they got there.

That is my two cents.

You get to play Krogan and Asari as a reward in ME3 after you finish the story and press Multiplayer. If you don't like the ending you can headbutt things to even it all out.

It depends, really, honestly most of the substantial draw of ME for many people was already mostly done before or experienced in other places....

Like take Star Control 3, here is a sinopsis from the wiki for that game (which I guess sorta spoils ME so be careful)

"Shortly after the end of Star Control 2, hyperspace mysteriously collapses throughout the galaxy, stranding most space faring races. The Captain, living on Unzervalt, builds another precursor ship, with an experimental "warp bubble" drive that allows it to travel between star systems without using hyperspace. The Captain contacts the other races and they discover that the hyperspace collapse is somehow connected with the Rainbow Worlds, and that it originates near the galactic core in the Kessari quadrant. The Captain is sent to the Kessari quadrant with colony ships from several races to investigate and solve the problems with hyperspace.

The Captain explores the Kessari quadrant, clashing with the local power bloc, the Hegemonic Crux, led by the Ploxis Plutocrats. During his investigation of the hyperspace collapse, a new threat becomes apparent - an ancient race called the Eternal Ones that consume the energy of all sentient beings once an eon are near to returning.

It is revealed that to protect themselves from the Eternal Ones the Precursors genetically modified themselves to regress to the intelligence of a cow. They created semi-sentient robots, the Daktaklakpak, to reverse the process after the Eternal Ones left. The Daktaklakpak malfunctioned and forgot their purpose, leaving the Precursors stranded at that intelligence level. The Captain temporarily reverses the process on a single Precursor, who explains to him before its death that only way to stop the eventual destruction of the galaxy is to stop the Eternal Ones as their unnatural use of interstellar fatigue will collapse the galaxy."

So for me, playing ME1 I felt like it was sort of the same fundamental thing conceptually and I guess maybe a felt a bit "been here before?"

But of course Bioware added lots of bells and whistles and polish and emphasizing the character interactions and jokes and stuff like that which made it pretty more upbeat and exciting perhaps.

So I mean, if you have played lots of other games and stuff like that it honestly might not strike you as super special or interesting, because as stated, much of it on a core level has been sort of done before and all that...

However, if you don't really mind something feels sort of familiar (which to be honest I don't really always care that much) but is just kind of a fun sort of romp then it can be sort of fun.

In the end, only you will be able to assess whether or not it was worth it.  Will the journey make you laugh? Yes.  Will the journet make you cry? Yes.  Will the journey make you think? Yes.  Will the journey make you angry? Probably yes  Will the journey make you thoughtful.  Maybe yes.  If you're looking just for an EPIC ending, will it disappoint you?  Probably yes.  Will it disappoint you enough to negate everything else that you experienced in the 100s of hours you will probably play this game?  That, my friend, is solely up to you.

As a result, should you fear trying it out?  Certainly not.

EDI: " Then the outcome is an unknown quantity, but you're saying i should attempt it anyways?"

Shepard:  "Nobody ever fell in love, without being a little bit brave".

Overall, yes.  Especially if you can get a deal on it.

Also there isn't a "paragon" ending to ME3, there are different alignments to the three endings, only setting a noticeable difference in tone with Control.  Destroy is of course the best ending though.

I've never played any Mass Effect games, but I've heard that the ending is horrible. Should I give the series a chance or would it be better to spare myself the pain?

Please don't be discouraged! I hope you haven't stumbled across too many spoilers (both in this thread and elsewhere) already and can get into it all with a fresh set of eyes.

It's an incredibly good series to be honest and worth every last penny.

I'd honestly pay full price for each of the games when they were originally released, in 2016 they're that good.

Ok, so what is MEHEM?

Mass Effect Happy Ending Mod.  It's a fan-written mod to ME3 (not sure if it's available on console or just PC) that changes the ending of that last game.  You can see videos of it on YouTube if you want to perhaps "spoil" the original ending for you.  I'd wait until you've played through ME3 at least once.  I actually also recommend playing through ME3 the first time without the Extended Cut and then applying the Extended Cut and then going on to explore MEHEM.

Whatever you do, I strongly recommend avoiding getting so hung up on Bioware's ending choices that you allow it to spoil the rest of the game(s) for you.

Sadly the MEHEM isn't available on the consoles, just the PC.

Personally speaking I prefer JohnP's Alternate MEHEM. The main version has begun to change too much in my opinion.

I'll have to look into JohnP's version.  Is there any YouTube vids of it?  I'm always open to seeing new fan fics (which is sort of the category I put these sorts of mods into).  I do play on an Xbox console, so I sort of expected that the mod wouldn't be available there.

There are

This mod has two versions. A keeps the endings mostly intact, Starchild and all, but makes high EMS Destroy the 'happy' ending. B cuts the Starchild out, skipping straight to the high EMS destroy.

OP, I think it also depends on whether you like a role-playing game that can be heavily weighted into conversations that slow down the shooting aspect to the game. There are some very cool characters you will meet up with, like Tali, Garrus and Wrex. I was hooked into ME Trilogy (this is my one and only vid game) by the characters who are well developed (enough) and become in-game 'friends' - just as much as the character development in Star Trek and Star Wars let you peek into their varied personalities and personal issues.  When I viewed fan-recorded vids posted on U--tube two years ago, especially the Paragon hero roles, and the breadth of powers one can use and combo together with other powers and effects, I found an enjoyable game.

Don't focus your decision on the poor ending of ME-3. In the end, it doesn't really matter so long as you can step back from the game, see it as a fantasy game, and temperately reason that it is a shame but it's not personal. Many here have said it's best to enjoy 98% of the game's journey - and they are dead-on right. The fact that many literally took the game's mistakes so personally is a clue to how effectively Bioware wrote a truly interesting plot that drew people into caring about the outcome. Too many fans are too heavily invested and take Bioware's every faux pas as a personal insult - which it isn't. Bioware is imperfect, like everyone else. Inside, you'll find cleverly created aspects that can delight your mind and senses.

If you don't want to be a full-on, armed to the teeth, dreadnought tank in battle, you have 'class' choices you can select for 'your' Shepard, each with a variety of power abilities that will challenge you to use, but you will learn how use them (The trial and error method works every time). You can also play at the "casual" level of play to get your feet wet and still enjoy it very much. There is some good running narrative to be found in the game - but certainly not all of it. Sometimes the writing is weak or lacking something, and the story doesn't always go the way you would like it to, even with the choices you make. There are characters that BW developed in all three games that are beloved and enjoyable to hang around with, and sometimes there's good old-fashioned inside humor to chuckle at. If you haven't seen it yet, check out the Mass Effect Wikia.com web site and look at the bio backgrounds for main characters in each of the three games. For me, it has been a daunting task to understand the game's nuances, becaue I'm new to gaming at age 26. ME-Wikia has been an invaluable free on-line resource that has saved my bacon many, many times. Study the mission walkthroughs before you step off the transport ship at your mission destination. You will be able to replay missions until you get it right (just the way you want to). Just keep an eye on 'quick-saving' your progress (PC key F6 in ME-1; F5 in ME-2-3), depending on how much you can stand being 'killed' and have to start over from your last save point.

The very best advice I can give to someone who has not yet installed the game on a PC - is to create an Origin account FIRST, then install the Origin software (upper right side corner button), reboot your computer (if that's what you are using), and then install the Trilogy (which isn't really expensive now.). It took me a little time to figure out how to to use Origin, but it's not all that hard. Hope this helps you. Best regards. BTW - driving the mako land buggy in ME-1 drives everyone nuts (it's very bouncy!), but you will get the hang of the driving physics in time. :)

Are people actually still complaining about the ending? It wasn't even that bad. People just love to complain, because that means they can sit back and throw words without having to do anything themselves. On top of that BioWare released a new version of the ending that was much better than what they had originally.

Just play the game and enjoy it. It's one of the best RPG's ever made. Period.

At the very least, play Mass Effect 2. That's the best game in the series, IMO.

Of course, it would be better to just get all three games and play through them sequentially, so you can benefit from save importing and get the full experience.

But yes, I would recommend the Mass Effect series. With the Extended Cut and Citadel DLCs, the ending stings much less than it did initially, and even with the bad ending, the trilogy was phenomenal.

I forgot people like you existed. Wow. But of course. Your internet level on this forum is higher than mine so therefore your opinion is automatically more correct. Next time you engage in conversation you might want to use something with actual substance. I don't have a funny video to link in reply, but if I did It'd probably include a fat man behind a keyboard that didn't shower in 2 months acting like an internet tough guy. If for some reason you misunderstand what that means, it means you.
