I was wondering if you'd be willing to give your opinion on how working for the Shadow Broker and invading privacy of governments, businesses and even individuals if it suits his boss isn't sketchy. I'm happy to listen, but I am confused as to where you are coming from.
I think you're combining "shady and not on the side of the law" with "bad guy." He isn't a bad person and seems to genuinely care about the fate of the galaxy, but he does work for basically a mob godfather (or godmother.) Sometimes, you need the black market and those kinds of connections to get things done. I respect that and admire it too. Yet, there should be a bit of a counterbalance in the portayal of the race.
And you're right, most of the PCs in BioWare games can be shady, or working with people that aren't exactly on the up and up. However, unlike the Volus, there is other examples of good humans/elves/dwarves, ect, that balance it out. The fact that both of us are having to dig into ME1 lore just to find examples of decent Volus speaks volumes about their treatment in the series. Besides, if I recall correctly, I don't think the player has to interact with Doran. Unlike the Volus idiots in ME2 (Samara's recruitment quest,) Barla Von (you have a quest for him in ME3,) and the Volus embassador (sold out the Turians,) who all have quests related to them.
We'll agree to disagree with the doctor. I saw him as cowardly and selfish. He even called himself as such, and I'm inclined to believe the character. However, I'll be the first to say that his actions and his emotions are up to interpretation, and I don't think either one of us are right or wrong about it. We just had different take-aways from the character.

So, to get this back on topic, I'd like a noble and heroic Volus. Someone on the traditional side of law and order. Not a drug dealer, not a traitor, not working for the Shadow Broker. I know they exist, and I still want to see one in the next game. The Volus isn't my favorite race (krogan for life!), but they sure deserved better than they got.
Oh, and how about a Turian lady in a core game in series this time? As in, not just in a DLC, but a main NPC or eventually, even possibly a squadmate a game or two down the road.
