Not for me. I play on the ps3, and because of whatever, Liara will always be the one to show up. It happened when I romanced Ashley

I play the ME Trilogy on PC. In the two ME-1 games I played with MaleShep and Ashley locked-in, my Import file resulted in Ashley being on the Normandy during the Collector attack. In my play-through with FemShep and no L.I., Liara was in-scene.

Seems like there are puzzling variations among the different console versions of ME. Go figure....

Didn't want to go off-topic, but wanted to reply to your post.

I consider working for the Shadow Broker as a shady thing.

The Shadow Broker is about as shady a name as you can get.

I'd argue that things can be technically legal and still shady. His job involved invading people's privacy, and he doesn't exactly communicate with Shepard like a person who has nothing to conceal.

I consider working for the Shadow Broker as a shady thing. I'm not calling him a bad guy by any stretch, but he was still more on the side of the black market. Shady or criminal doesn't always been that someone is a bad person, but it is harder to trust someone like that.

I do remember now the Volus in the labs in ME1. He wasn't any of those things...but he admitted to pushing a co-worker out of the way to save his own skin. So of course the only other intelligent Volus I got to meet in game was at the very least selfish. Not to mention that he was traumatized, so we didn't even get to see him at his best as an intelligent doctor.

By that logic we have yet to play a protagonist that isn't shady.

Han Olar didn't push the other scientist out. He closed the door before she could get in the tram and kept it closed when she got there because a Rachni was right behind her.

Oh, I have a Volus who isn't any of those things. Doran, the owner, cook, and bartender of Flux.

I was wondering if you'd be willing to give your opinion on how working for the Shadow Broker and invading privacy of governments, businesses and even individuals if it suits his boss isn't sketchy. I'm happy to listen, but I am confused as to where you are coming from.

I think you're combining "shady and not on the side of the law" with "bad guy." He isn't a bad person and seems to genuinely care about the fate of the galaxy, but he does work for basically a mob godfather (or godmother.) Sometimes, you need the black market and those kinds of connections to get things done. I respect that and admire it too. Yet, there should be a bit of a counterbalance in the portayal of the race.

And you're right, most of the PCs in BioWare games can be shady, or working with people that aren't exactly on the up and up. However, unlike the Volus, there is other examples of good humans/elves/dwarves, ect, that balance it out. The fact that both of us are having to dig into ME1 lore just to find examples of decent Volus speaks volumes about their treatment in the series. Besides, if I recall correctly, I don't think the player has to interact with Doran. Unlike the Volus idiots in ME2 (Samara's recruitment quest,) Barla Von (you have a quest for him in ME3,) and the Volus embassador (sold out the Turians,) who all have quests related to them.

We'll agree to disagree with the doctor. I saw him as cowardly and selfish. He even called himself as such, and I'm inclined to believe the character. However, I'll be the first to say that his actions and his emotions are up to interpretation, and I don't think either one of us are right or wrong about it. We just had different take-aways from the character. :)

So, to get this back on topic, I'd like a noble and heroic Volus. Someone on the traditional side of law and order. Not a drug dealer, not a traitor, not working for the Shadow Broker. I know they exist, and I still want to see one in the next game. The Volus isn't my favorite race (krogan for life!), but they sure deserved better than they got.

Oh, and how about a Turian lady in a core game in series this time? As in, not just in a DLC, but a main NPC or eventually, even possibly a squadmate a game or two down the road.

Um, care to explain how working for the Shadow Broker and invading privacy of governments, businesses and even individuals if it suits them? I think you're confusing "shady and not on the side of the law" with bad guy. He isn't, but he does work for basically a mob godfather (or godmother.)

What? Where did you get that idea? I haven't said anything about him being a bad guy.

And you're right, most of the PCs in BioWare games can be shady, or working with people that aren't exactly on the up and up. Talking about this, I would like to be able to be a protagonist who isn't shady or works with/for people who are shady. The closest we got was the Inquisitor, and that's because you are the one in charge.

We'll agree to disagree with the doctor. I saw him as cowardly and selfish. He even called himself as such, and I'm inclined to believe the character. Oh, he was definitely selfish and a coward. I was just saying he didn't push the other doctor out, but kept her from getting in. At least he feels guilty about it though.

Again, Doran. But yeah, more would be better.

I would love to have a female Turian as a major NPC and/or squadmate. Nyreen was one of my favorite parts of the Omega DLC. I was even hoping we could play as one, but sadly we can't.

...And the ones you think we should. Like your wish list, but specifically relating to unexplored story and character elements. Also, I'm not talking about just anything we haven't had. ME hasn't had a purple elephant for us to ride on, but pointing something like that out would not align with the spirit of the topic. This is for those things which you believe would fit the lore and benefit the story, and that would be completely new.

For my part:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we've had much in the way of named Salarian antagonists. Unless you count Anoleis, which I don't.

We've also never had a human engineer class squadmate (Tali and Mordin were worth it, but I wouldn't say no to them changing up that trend).

I also don't think we ever had the option to actually throw an enemy out of the airlock, and I kind of want to pull an Ellen Ripley.

you forget about this pyjak

I probably worded my question wrong there. I apologize for that; my puppy is finally healthy for the first time in about a month, and he's being a spaz. He had an infection after surgery, and he's a scotty/lab mix. He's enjoying his freedom from the Cone of Shame and running around like a mad man.

Anyway, from what I read, you don't think Barla Von was a shady character for working with the Shadow Broker. How is he not sketchy? Considering what his boss does, I'd say that's not so much on the side of law and order. Forgive my assumption there. It just comes across like being shady makes someone a bad guy. Again, I'm a little distracted, so apologize again for reading things into your post that weren't intended.

Oh and another thing not related to our Volus debate: How about a female Krogan in action? As in, a possible frontline fighter? Sure, we see Eve take out the Cerberus goon with a shotgun, but for the most part we were protecting her. I can't see why a lady Krogan or two wouldn't come on the Ark/Ship/Excuse to have a mobile colony. They still would want to colonize new worlds after all. I know that Krogan females are highly protected, but I'd like to see one stand on her own.

This is a pretty fun thread. :)

I don't know all the details about Broker and Von from only like ME1 I can remember them and barely in 2. The Shadow Broker basically is like a neutral presence doesn't really do anything bad, actually arguably does mostly good from what I remember, does a lot of missions for like the alliance and stuff.

A few of the characters I'd really like to see showcased:

Female Turian military leader.

A Vorcha who, while still a crazy pyromaniac, has an actual moral code that they cling to.

A wicked, self serving Quarian (I enjoyed Golo in the novels--he was despicable is all the right ways).

A male reporter.

And now,

A noble and wise Volus. They should dole out a little sage advice now and then.

Vorcha pyromaniac. For some reason I read that as Volus pyromaniac  I would add a salarian sniper who chews unlit cigars, who drinks too much and then challenges every krogan he meets to a headbutting contest by claiming he invented the genophage, and who tries to impress all the women he meets by actually licking his eyeballs. When asked why he behaves this way, he sneers, "because life is too damn short" and then laughs like it's the galaxy's best joke.

Here are few ideas:

  • Have an in-game extranet (or Andromeda's equivalent) that you can use. The protagonist could gain access through the Omni-tool so you could look at Al Jilani's twitter feed, visit Shepard's blog ("this is my favourite place on the extranet" :P) or buy shares on the Andromeda stock exchange. I'm thinking on the same lines as how GTA implements it's own internet.
  • A higher difficulty than 'insanity' (or make the insanity difficulty harder). I found this difficulty especially in ME 2 & 3 to be relatively easy. So on the highest difficulty, why don't some of the enemies have additional upgrades/immunities. I like how Dragon Age introduced the trials because the enemies can level up to the same as your character and they can have extra protection/immunities to make it more of a challenge.
  • A side activity such as playing cards or "Kepesh-Yakshi".
  • I mentioned in another thread that a medic class could be introduced. A class more focused on support orientated abilities such as being able to carry more medi-gel, combat enhancing drugs, healing grenades etc. Or by putting these support abilities with an existing class.
  • Customisable Mako
  • More character interaction when you're out in the field (similar to the banter system in Dragon Age)
  • Having a long drawn out tactical boss fight. A boss fight which covers an area of more than one room/area (similar to The End in the Metal Gear series).

Having read this thread, I agree that there should be an example of a 'noble/good' Volus (The only example of a non-shady Volus (so far that I can think of) is the pizza deliverer in the Citadel DLC  :D).

Okay, now that you mentioned it, the Volus does appear out of nowhere.

Surely, he didn't break into an apartment just to deliver a pizza as that would be pretty shady. If the apartment door was locked then he is definitely shady (and a criminal) and if the door was open (and he walked in anyway) well... that can be shady as well .

For all we know, he may be the Clark Kent of the Volus community. Working as a pizza deliverer by day but fights crime on the side:

"Is it a bird, is it a plane... no it's SUPER-VOLUS alongside his earthclan lover Lois <deep breath> Lane" :P

Anyway, I hope the Volus make a return in some capacity because they're the galaxy's little punch lines. A heroic/noble Volus would give a different perspective than we're used to.

Heh. I remember posting something like this in the "Design your own crew" thread a while ago. Glad to see I'm not alone in the desire for the chaotic good, badass Salarians. :)

"Male Salarian Soldier. Engaging personality. The heaviest the weapon, the better. Smiles all the time. Sings while slaughtering enemies. "Life too short". Not romanceable, but bangs every single crew member except for female human soldier at some point. Any heavy drinking situation in which the PC is not romantically involved with someone else leads to a cut-scene of the PC waking up beside him."
