There are few games that I have played that are within earshot of the facial animations that this game has been able to produce. Whenever I get to watch Josephine talk its an amazing experience. I was thinking about this while I was playing recently and it boggles my mind to think of the painstaking work that went into creating all these facial animations for so many characters. Granted, its not perfect and maybe there are a few games that do it as well or better, but this is a massive game and I just want to thank the devs for putting this kind of detail into a game like this.
One thing I really like about DA:I compared to other games I have played.

I didn't care for it.
But yes, freaky good facial animations.

I'm glad i'm playing the game much later. I did it on purpose. For all the content to be released and all the patches. I think this is the best Dragon Age game by far for me. But there's a big put off for me: 8 ability slot and no second hotbar. I'm playing as Knight Enchanter. Loving every bit.

I love how all the dialogue is fully lip-synched. Even in party banter and other ambient dialogue everything is lip-synched properly. Hardly any games bother with that, but it's a really nice bit of attention to detail. Sometimes I even use the tactical cam when I hear party banter just to zoom in on my companion's faces when they speak. Yes I'm sad...

For me the facial animations in Biowares games have always been pretty good. I'm very impressed with the lip syncing as the characters talk. It seems slightly better in the DA games to me than in the ME games but I find it pretty solid in both

My favorite instance is actually Leliana prefacing the Wicked Hearts quest at the War Table. It fits her character that she somehow becomes a lot more animated talking about the game, and her VA nailed it too.

I am not fond of how general expressions of happiness or sadness stick to Inquisitor's face, depending on the choice of dialogue.
But otherwise the animations are top notch in DAI and show the technical evolution throughout the series. I still remember that silly horrifying expression of the Warden during the Mage origin before the Harrowing. No matter how pretty the Warden I could make, that expression was always awful.

Well going through something like a Harrowing is supposed to be terrifying for any mage because they know that if they fail it they're dead so their expression's always going to be one of dread at least it would be for me.

Ok, but the animation was horrible and unnatural, it looked like a sad Joker.

Facial animations have been pretty great even going as far back as the first Mass Effect. It's the rest of the animations that are the problem, IMO.

The amount of dialogue this game serves up in sync is very impressive, as is letting you sculpt a face while keeping the speaking animations in sync. Gameplay in-game dialogue is also synced well, which is not necessarily true for Naughty Dog games.
But the speaking animations in the ME and DA games make me feel the voices are "disembodied" at first, and I always need a few moments to acclimate myself to the presentation. Same with games like The Witcher 3, and even the recent clips shown for Uncharted 4 (Nate's brother in particular). But this isn't true for me for, say, The Last Of Us, or Ubisoft games, or even the recent Call Of Duty or Lego games. When the voice seems disembodied it throws me out of the experience a bit.
I still maintain that Half-Life 2 in 2004 set a bar with facial/dialogue animation that few games surpass even with a decade's advance in technology.
