Maybe we should turn this around and have a companion hit us with "yes, I like you but no to sex." Player gives up moves on or is persistent across the trilogy (assuming one is planned) and is rewarded with the "big" payoff. Something like Samara but with more romantic feelings involved.

o.o

I don't know how I'd react to that...

I just think it would be super funny to have a really hot female all the young guys will gush over to tease them across 3 entire games.

While Natashina said basically everything I was thinking, I’d like to reiterate that while I don’t agree with how the OP phrased the request, it is perfectly reasonable to express a desire for sex-free romantic relationships in game. I think Josephine’s ambiguity fit her character and was well executed. It should be based on the character, whether no sex would be a deal-breaker or not, but nothing wrong with some who don’t mind.

The amount of insult throwing from both sides is absurd (this came up on the DA:I forum too), and it is just as ridiculous to demean those who prefer a sex-less romantic relationship as it is to demonize those who think sex is vital for intimacy.

I do disagree that all the romance lines should be ambiguous, as it leaves out the fan base that still wants it left in. It also possibly projects the message that sex is shameful and should be hidden, which many people would disagree with and may not make sense for a character's personality.

I also wanted to mention that I don't think this is something for all potential love interests. I've been a fan of seeing a sex positive character like Isabela (minus that stupid STD joke,) and I would love to see one in a ME game.

Agreed, but even with Isabela there's the constant jokes and banter (especially from Aveline) about her being a '******'.  Same with Zevran.  Having a character that likes sex and is honest about it is awesome, they're a nice foil to the 'innocent virgins' like Alistair, however we need a little less of a judgy attitude from...well....everyone about it.  I cringe with all the grief Isabela gets.   Yes, a few characters would and should mention it, like Aveline, but not as much as they do with Isabela in DA2, she gets way too much flack.

At least Zevran got some comments too but I can't help but feel there's a double standard lurking there in the shadows.  I know that's life, women are judged more harshly for sleeping around than men most of the time, but let's take it down a notch?

And why are the promiscuous characters always the rogues or the mercenaries?  Why not the Lord or Lady or Seeker or Asari Archaeologist?

Some of the alien characters should probably have different attitudes towards sex than humans.

Human sex negative attitudes are partly the result of the impact of religion on culture, and partly biology...unwanted pregnancies are a strong motivation to hold off on sex until involved in a committed relationship.

But why should Asari for example, share those views? Unwanted pregnancies are a non issue for them, as their pregnancies only happen by choice. Not all religions had a sex negative outlook either, even in our own history. The gods the Greeks and Romans worshiped for example, were often not only sexually active but promiscuous as well. The ancient Semitic goddess Asherah was sometimes worshipped through ritual sex. This (NSFW) is carved on an ancient Hindu temple. Ect, Ect. Alien religions don't necessarily need to align with Judeo-Christian attitudes towards sex, so it isn't a given that their cultures would be impacted by a religious view of sex as something sinful or shameful.

I think Josephine chaste romance was pretty terrible but that's a personal opinion. The more objective point is that if you are going to do that sort of thing Solas is a much better example as it doesn't degrade the options of the majority because hetrosexual females had 4 potential options in comparison to the 2 everybody else for such an experiment. Now i'm rather dubious about widescale expanding romances to cater equally for this and the likely decrease in individual romance depth that this would likely result in but if it was a singular alternative romance on top of the regular allocation then that's less problematic.

Romans could be pretty uptight actually. You stood out if you weren't (like Ovid).

In some ways they could be more be more uptight, but in others their attitudes were far more permissive than ours. It would probably be accurate to just say that their attitudes towards sex were just different from that of modern Westerners.

Please just no!! Isabela is a glorious pirate queen who rips 7 kinds of p*** from lady man hands and Aveline gives it back too. I absolutely adore the relationship and really don't attempts to PC this sort of thing out of existence. Zevran with a sexual attitude similar to Isabela's isn't in terms of character. So please let's not take it down a notch where it suits the characters involved.

I was going to add Solas as an example, but since I was speaking more on ambiguity rather than sex-free, I remembered a conversation with him in the game that pointed out which way the relationship swung. I personally thought Josephine's romance was a nice change of pace and suited her nicely, but I agree that making it one of the two options for heterosexual guys was a bummer. But I would want them to create the characters first and foremost that fit the story they want to tell, and not create them solely for their sexual availability.

Really - define the difference then, between a good friend and a "partner" if it's not sex. Without resorting to meaningless semantics.

Romantic feelings? That's not the same as sexual attraction, mind you.

Not romantically, no. Unless you're both friends and lovers, that is.

Romantic love and friendship-love are pretty different.

Lol, I did say that actually.  I don't want to 'PC that sort of thing out of existance'.

As I said, I'd want to keep Aveline's relationship with Isabela as it's awesome, but I happen to think that there should be a variety of different attitudes from different characters.  Isabela has so many great things going on but all Aveline will ever mention is sex, and other characters are guilty of that too.   So Isabela gets the '****' label when in fact she's a badass pirate queen who excels with a dagger.  Let's mention that once in awhile perhaps?  Let's not go for the super easy std jokes and ridiculous armour?

I'm all for promiscuous characters, but I'd like some of their friends/comrades not to keep getting so butt hurt about it and making it the number one insult they use.   Some of the characters.  SOME of them.  Not all....let's have one who freaking hates overtly sexual ppl, go ahead, but I want a variety of attitudes.

I can't help feeling there's a faint whiff of 'liking sex is bad' which I think exists a little in DA:O and DA2.  Zevran and Isabela are shady rogues and oh look, they're the ones who sleep around.  Also Morrigan and Leliana, the also shady/dodgy law breaking companions.  Sebastian used to be too but he mended his wicked ways and now he's a good guy!

Why?  Why is liking sex always linked with a dodgy moral code?  I assume in real life there are plenty of people who manage to have a healthy sex life with lots of partners and not shiv some guy in the back to nick his wallet on the way home.   :bandit:

These things actually ruined Isabela for me. I mean the STD jokes are awkward, and it didn't really add anything to anything. Not to Isabela as a character or Thedas as a setting. Also the armour had what purpose? I mean she is a duelist, wouldn't a leather armour that covered her skin be most pratical? Also a leather armour can be made into something sexy that would still fit Isabela's style. Abit off-topic, but had to be said.

I blame it on Varric's not so trustworthy storytelling. ;)
