This is my first post on the forum so forgive me if I am posting this in the wrong place.

I have been planning to do my own canon Shepard playthrough for a while know. But I have been stuck on whether he will be Paragon, Paragade, Renegon, or Renegade. I recently saw some posts regarding a character arc for Shepard. Some players went from Paragon-Renegade over the trilogy, while others went from Renegade to Paragon (similar to Han Solo).

My question is: How many of you have included some form of character arc with your Sheaprd, and how did you justify their change of heart? If you haven't, what do you think the best trigger is for Shepard to become good/bad?

First of all, welcome to the forum :)

Hm, not sure it's an easy answer what's the best trigger for Shepard to become good/bad.

I guess the main thing you have to do for what you plan is to flesh out your Shepard some more. Have you already settled with the background? From there you can spin a nice story around your Shepard, and then plan out how he/she would act for most situations.

When I ran my first FemShep a couple of months ago I actually wanted her to be a "test" character. I wanted to try lots of things I hadn't done before, which first and foremost included her being a mission first type, and being suspicious of aliens, including the crew. So she got the Colonist/Ruthless background because that fit my idea very well. She was a mix of Paragon and Renegade, so it was nothing I really set in stone, I just played her according to her mindset. She became trusting of her alien crew apart from Wrex, who she shot in the end (I used a "no persuasion" rule with her for most parts in the games). I enjoyed her run so much that she became my canon Shepard.

There are a lot of cool character ideas around, for example in this thread. You could give it a read if you maybe need some more ideas and to see how people approached their Sheps.

Another idea for my next character is a naive Paragon FemShep who believes in 2nd chances and the good in people/species, but she will reach a turning point in ME3 where she won't cure the genophage because Wreav will be in charge (I'll let Ashley shoot Wrex). She'll see that not everything can be solved peacefully and thus will change here a bit too (more towards Renegade). I guess there also won't be peace between the quarians and the geth :D

Another member from here has a Paragon character who was above everyone else, a holier than thou FemShep that was a bit of an a*s to crew and other people. She changes after she saw that some shady characters (Kasumi the thief, Mordin the war criminal etc.) gave their lives during the Suicide Mission.

I guess... it really also depends on how far you're willing to go with killing off characters or doing mean things ;)

Anyway, I hope you can find some good ideas and have fun with creating your canon Shepard!

Well Hi and welcome to the forum :) and as fraggle said it all depends on what you want to do with your character do you want them to be a goody two shoes who believes in the good of the world or a hardened veteran who wants to do what he/she believes is right or anything in between? No matter what your answer will be she will be your character and someone who you will hopefully shape for the next two games assuming you will start in ME1 XD.... I have my canon shep, colonist/ruthless who is a complete renegade in ME1 with very little paragon points due to a certain character *cough*Kaidan*cough* that helps her realizing that maybe being a tyrant and a ruthless killer isnt always the answer though she does revert back during ME2 and tries to develop her more paragon sides in ME3 due to her companions and love interest :D

but I also have her siblings Eldrin who i made into a colonist/sole survivor who becomes quite traumatized but doesnt show it he is mostly paragon, flirts alot with women and tries to do his best but it goes to **** most of the time since he is slow to take action (so i dont take the interrupts in both ME2 and ME3) he manages to befriend wrex saves ashley on virmire but in ME3 he doesnt cure the genophage has to kill wrex and gets mordin killed due to being afraid of what the krogan might due once they increase in population >.> also sides with the quarians getting the geth killed since he didnt want to do legions quest because he is paranoid with the geth and in the end chooses synthesis to grant everyone happiness xD

and finally the eldest Jared he is colonist/ war hero he hates the alien race due to watching them die on mindoir . so he naturally kills wrex(by shooting him himself) more renagade than my canon shep and he was originally paragon >.> and is pro human and cerberus all the way and as you can imagine chooses control....

So whatever shep you make I hope you have fun and enjoy his/her story!

Hi, yeah my Shep definitely went on a arc from naive paragon alliance boy through to frustrated renegon. There's lots of markers for me. A big one is death/re-birth and the peeling back of scales from his eyes this causes.

I was playing the game with a random Renegade Shepard when I came to the part where you obtain the Cipher on Feros. I instantly thought that it would be a great point for Shepard to snap. Is it believable if a Paragon War Hero Shepard can experience the full Prothean vision, causing him to turn to Renegade/Renegon?

For starters, I usually play my canon Shepard with New Game +. In ME1, my Shepard started off as Neutral to Renegade after Ashley's death where she's becoming truly desperate and an emotionally compromised. But sometimes I use Gibbed just to get through some of the alignment gates in ME2. It was harder to be neutral in ME2 since Paragon Shepard can come off as Cerberus sympathiser and gullible while Renegade Shepard can sound very pro-Cerberus and Cerberus puppet and a lot of conversations don't have neutral option so you end up trying to balance either two.

I alternate dialogues whenever I like. In ME3, being renegade isn't as punishing as ME2, and its largely based on how you play your game. If you have relatively paragon playthroughs in ME1 and ME2 (resolve a lot of stuff and save a lot of people, good outcome in general), in ME3, even if you're a renegade, you are actually a renegon. And I find that being a renegade in Rannoch arc (which I'm currently at the moment) is far more satisfying since there's additional dialogues and there's a lot of argument. I like that in ME1 and ME3, mixing dialogues tend to branch out to a different set of dialogues which is relatively absent in ME2 since every dialogues lead to the same dialogue branches (similar treatment in SWTOR too).

Yeah it could be i mean shep did say that the visions was showing him/her the destruction of mankind i believe... so if your shep has a mental breakdown at this time its highly believable :)
