I was wondering if it's ever been confirmed that Sten dies if he is left in his cage.
If he survives, does he still become Arishok? I'm curious.

I don't know, but i don't think so.
Everyone dies... ![]()
But yes, i think. Sometime.
He dies.
He does not die, no.
Yeah, but he is going to appear in DA:4 either, probably another Lyrium ghost.
No, the player never sees Sten dies in Origins. This means it's possible for Stenishok to show up in a major Dragon Age 4 role.
Sten is either alive or "unknown" which is basically the same as alive knowing Bioware.
Him becoming Arishok is probably canon regardless of any player choices, since the one in DA2 is "fired" if he survives the events of the game according to Varric. Varric also has a banter where he mentions meeting "the new one?" with Iron Bull, which is either Sten or another Qunari in case Bioware decides to actually have two different characters for the role in the future.
Sten= MIA until DA:4?
I hope the 'Spawn had a nice feast instead of Sten returning in DA:4.

I have recruited him in the majority of my games so,in the games I left him for Darkspawn bait he's MIA..
I wish a dev would confirm or deny this. Ah well.
There is nothing indicating Sten is dead if left. Sure he was stuck in a cage but if your town is about to be overrun by darkspawn I am sure the towns folk could have either freed him then he just left them to there fate or he could have broke out himself in desperation. The Arishok in DA2 is canon not the current Arishok and I don't see bioware pulling double Arishok duty just in case Sten was left. Sten being Arishok is one of those decision we do not decide it just happens. If the warden finds sten sword or not he is Arishok if he is left in the cage he will most likely be Arishok. Since he has no on-screen death I believe Arishok(Sten) will return in DA4 to maybe die then depending on the plot. Being left in the cage I feel could factor in Sten's attitude towards Thedas as Arishok. If left in the cage he should be more ruthless and cutthroat but if freed and his sword is found maybe a choice to reason with him or not kill him can happen.
Dragon Age: Origins says he "probably found his death" in his codex and frankly that seems like the only logical outcome. However, all the references to a a new hornless Arishok that met with Varric remain intact in Dragon Age Inquisition.
A possibility is that Sten was freed or broke his way out (remember he wanted to be in the cage willingly so we don't know if he could just have pried the bars open). I highly doubt Sten would just keel over and let himself be killed by darkspawn after what they did to his friends. Perhaps the sight of darkspawn revitalizes his fighting spirit.
He could have found his blade eventually without the player's help but that would take more time than with your help clearly. While doing so he'd pursue his atonement. Don't know how but he could always find a way.
Given that he would have clearly battled darkspawn and survived the Blight in Thedas on his own while looking for his blade, his report would be sufficient and then some.
3-4 years is more than enough time for him to return to Par Vollen time for the events of Act 2 in DA2.
The way he became Arishok is unclear in all scenarios. We can safely assume that he takes leadership either way.
Sten is one of the few companions of DAO that cannot be killed, yet they never reused him in others games.
I think it is because most players didn't found him to be entertaining enough.
I imagine Sten got out on his own.. especially if only a smaller group of darkspawn spotted him at the cage. I think he could have fought those off and run the hell away before getting swarmed by the horde.
It would be easier for them to write it this way at least.
Nothing is true, everything is retcon-able.

Or reasonably explained with fair assumptions and logical thought processes ![]()
Well not everything can be obviously but there hasn't been a hole too deep in Dragon Age yet

Really? The consensus on these boards seem to be that he is the most fascinating of the bunch. Many people enjoyed his stern and rigid attitude.
They couldn't really bring him back because a Qunari companion in DA2 would be all sorts of a hot mess. Besides Sten's behind-the-scenes appointment as Arishok gives him great character development.
I sincerely doubt we won't see him in the next installment. We will be going to the Tevinter-Anderfels-Par Vollen region.
We'll have a more definite ending, for sure... when I kill the **** out of him in the next game.

I don't even remember anything about Sten when I first played. I'm not sure I even recruited him. That's how much I cared.
I grew to appreciate him later, but I still hate the Qun. I think he served a similar purpose as Wynne though.. he always emphasized duty, telling the Warden they'd find their purpose in their "role" as a Warden. Like wynne, he didn't care about your personal life. You were just a husk, meant to fill a role or ideal. I still don't like him for that.. but it's necessary to have characters like this.
I sincerely hope not, he's one of my fav's. Getting to crack that tacturn shell and getting him to actually talk to my HoF was a highlight for me atleast. Really looking forward to Stenishok in future DA games.
Yes I believe he does although personally I tend to recruit him rather than leave him there. Even if I don't use him all that much.

You never crack it though. He's the same person from start to finish.
If I was a Qunari fan, I'd say that was to his credit.
Sten should be dead if left in this cage.
Is Sten dead if left in cage?
No, epic bioware writing skills strike again.
Yes, he becomes Arishok. It is just another of many things that show that import in dai is pointless and they should drop it in exchange for more freedom with decisions.
