That's already making two assumptions: that Sten was defenseless (aren't the villagers precisely afraid of him because he can be a killing-machine even without his sword?) and was locked when the darkspawn arrived.

Well, those same comics depict Alistair as king, and yet the games have taken into account all his possible states from the end of DA:O. A Wrex/Wreav situation is not at all out of the question for the Arishok, particularly given they've stated time and again that the comics represent only the writer's personal choices.
That is a fair point, since we have the Wrex/Wreav precedent. Still, I think Sten's case is more likely because Wrex was killed on screen by the PC (and that didn't stop Leliana), while we don't even have proof that Sten died at any point in DA:O.
