Hello everyone!

 

So, that's what happened: I bought NwN2 from GOG.com. It worked well for... 7-8 months let's say. Then one day, out of the blue, it decided that "working" was too good for it.

 

When I launch it -of course with admin & compatibility things- there's a black screen (as usual, just as before the ads) BUT it blocks there with my cursor running, like saying "i'm working on it". Fact is, it's blocked and I have to use "Ctrl+Alt+Del" to close the program.

 

Every time I launch the game, it ends up like that:

 

 

- black screen

 

- the cursor is still useable, but the cursor is like a running wheel

 

- closing the programming (even after waiting for 30 mins or so) with Ctrl+Alt+Del

 

 

 

Any help, please?

- any OS or software updates around the day NWN2 stopped working?
- any install or uninstall operation around the date you got the issue?
- any driver update or hardware modification?
- etc.

I know the game is significantly slower to load if there's a disc in my DVD drive.  Even though the security measure was removed and there's no reason to check for a disc, it still reads whatever disc is in the drive.  On an occasion when I had a disc in the drive that was unreadable, the game never loaded.  One possibility.

Uhm I checked.

 

- No OS or software updates happened. No wait, I might have updated an Anti-Spyware of mine... could that be?

 

- I installed Batman Arkham Origins, but when I uninstalled it nothing has changed. I'm not sure if that was the case..?

 

- Nope, nothing of these.

 

- Can't remember anything else that might be part of that "etc" right now.

 

I tried to install again DirectX 9.0c, the .NET Framework 4.5, Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 AND 2008 (other than 2010 and 2013) but nothing has changed yet.

I uninstalled it and installed it again (twice), but nothing changed again.

 

An interesting thing is, every time i uninstalled the game and re-installed again i found it at its last patch (1.23.1765) instead of 1.06

Ps. after uninstalling, try running a registry cleaner like CCleaner.

Well I personally don't use the toolset, so I guess no harm is done..?

 

 

And yep, I used CCleaner after an Install, but I found it again patched at 1.23...

The GOG version is always patched to 1.023.1765, that's not the problem
If you look in event viewer, does it give you any clue to the cause of the hang?
If it hangs trying to play AtariLogo.bik, it could be a codec issue. Have you installed any codec packs recently?

I don't have the disk in the CD/DVD drive, since I installed the game with a downloaded version.

 

 

 

I'll go check in the event viewer if there's anything about that, if there's something written on it.

 

And nope, I haven't installed any codec packs recently.

Not "the" disc, but any disc.  I know you're using the GOG version.  Even the latest patch version does this.  Do you have any disc in your drive?

You could try disabling the intro movies to see if you can get to the start screen.

in Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2 folder, open NWN2.ini
Add the line Disable Intro Movies=1 right under the [Display Options] line.

No I haven't.

 

And, I already disabled the Intro Movies... but still nothing.

 

 

EDIT: I haven't even one Log, so I can't tell you about the event viewer, I guess. Probably my launch is not even considered as a Log or something.

ps. Event Viewer should be under Programs -> Administrative Tools

it's an operating system thing ...

Or your could press win + R and type dxdiag
Then Save All Information
Then in dxdiag.txt scroll to the bottom where it says Diagnostics
That will show all recent faulting applications.

Okay, good.  That rules that out.  (Presuming you also don't have any virtual drives mounted.)

Alright, I ran DxDiag and Event Viewer... but no faulting apps appeared. It says it's all normal.

 

 

And I don't have any virtual drives mounted XD

 

 

 

Another thing: "nwclientLog1.txt" is completely empty, even when I launch the game (and when it's closed too xD). As if I never launched the game itself.

free space on the /temp drive? ( usually C: )

idk, ~5 to ~20 gb

Well, my C: drive has 214 GB of free space, and my D: drive has a lot of free space too, 236 GB.

 

My /temp directory is 113KB.

( a ) /temp dir has only 113kb in it,
or
( b ) the drive on which [ \Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Temp ] resides has only 113kb

rename the "neverwinter nights 2" folder stored under "my documents" and start nwn2. this will reset all your settings and will load the game without any mods.
