Making Insanity More Challenging

Don't use the Harrier... It's the highest dps assault rifle, doing double and triple the dps of many of its counterparts, and it's relatively lightweight to boot.  And the gap is even moreso considering its accuracy and headshot capability.  When most of the other weapons in its class are deemed obsolete "because the Harrier is better in every way," it's OP.  Besides, this one's easy to headcanon because Shepard shouldn't be running around with a Cerberus weapon anyway.  You didn't see Captain America with a swastika on his shield, did you?

Don't equip squadmates with the Typhoon...  They melt everything like butter, which, speaking of butter, you can put some on your popcorn while you watch them play the game for you.

Don't use Explosive Burst Incendiary Ammo...  Seems like everyone's recommended builds and weapon choices revolve around this talent.  Evidence enough for me that it's OP.

What are some others?  Things you avoid to keep the SP game somewhat challenging?

There have been a number of "Insanity is too easy" threads.

A few people made some mods in attempt to make Insanity more challenging.

Spectre difficulty by Kronner is probably the most notable.

I also found Krogan Dream Insanity Mod by vertigo72.

Neither mod was finished.

But basically, as you point out, any way you want to make the game harder requires artificial handicaps, like "do not use this weapon" or "do not use this power/evolution".

Final note: As for challenging, play as a Vanguard without Charge against your clone in the Citadel DLC. Probably the most challenging fight in the game with the exception of the Mirror Match in the Armax Arsenal Arena.

Here's a playthrough that you might find challenging

I did a playthrough using a level 1 pistol only and no powers. I only used points for health. I did the same for the squadmates. Had them use a level 1 weapon and no powers.

To date, its the hardest playthrough I've done.

I had thought about repackaging my attempt at rebalancing the game into DLC form so that it was easier to install and might get around some of the dumb bugs I ran into.

But really if someone just wants to make the game hard without gimping, it is fairly straightforward to go into coalesced and modify stuff in the difficulty handler like shield and healthgate as well as enemy damage multipler and hp ranges.

...  Mirror Match in the Armax Arsenal Arena.

And there you go...

Mirror Match

Insanity

No Medigel

One-Shot Player Shields

Enhanced Enemy Shields

Enemy Damage Boost

No Placed Ammo

I gave up after about 20 tries.  Soldier with Black Widow/Valkyrie.  Using Wrex and James tank-specced so they can stay alive.  James with Typhoon.  Wrex with Claymore w/ Omni-Blade.  Made it to round 3 a few times, but then the numbers just get to be too much.  They move fast, flank, spam powers, and they usually ignore your squad and go straight for you.  Your shields seem to take years to recharge, if they do recharge, and go down in one shot anyway.  They whittle you down to one bar of health, and then all it takes is a couple of hits and you're dead.

If anyone has beaten it, my hat's off.

Try using a weapon loadout that is "sub-optimal" for your class, with no weapon mods.

As a Soldier, only have a pistol

As a Vanguard, only have a sniper rifle

As an Infiltrator, only have a shotgun

As an Engineer, Adept, or Sentinel, carry the heaviest weapons you can find, like the Black Widow and Claymore

-------------

Only level up your signature power, passive, and Fitness.

Use only that power.

For an extra challenge, only level up your signature power; no Fitness, no passive.

-------------

Never use your signature power.

Try playing each class without their go-to move.

-------------

Never change your weapon loadout in the Normandy or prior to a mission.

Every time you come across a weapon in the field, you MUST change weapons.

-------------

Melee only.

You can carry weapons (since you must have at least one), but never fire it.

Heavy melee, melee combo, grab-n-stab are all viable, but no weapons and no powers.

To make it easier, you can use melee mods like the shotgun blade or pistol stunner.

Obviously, cutscenes/Interrupts don't count; also events like what happens at the end of the Mars mission, where you have to gun down the Cerberus bot, that's acceptable.

Or when you face down the Reaper on Rannoch, Marauder Shields at the end, a Renegade interrupt where you shoot your gun; things like that won't break the spirit of this challenge.

-------------

Bonus powers only.

No class powers, no "regular" powers, just the power you pick as a bonus.

Carry only one weapon per mission.

For extra difficulty, pick one bonus power from the start and never change it.

If it's an ammo power, use only the Predator pistol.

If it's a grenade power, then you may spend one (and ONLY one) point on a single additional power, but it must be the "weakest" in your class; so things like Pull for Adepts/Vanguards, Cryo Blast for Engineers/Sentinels, Cryo Ammo for Soldiers/Infiltrators.

(Again, what qualifies as "weakest" is up for interpretation, but you get the idea)

-------------

Pick a single weapon.

Use that weapon, and ONLY that weapon, for the entire game.

For an extra challenge, never change your squadmate's loadouts when you acquire them.

Considering the way the game plays out in the beginning, you don't have to start this challenge until you get control of the Normandy after leaving the Citadel for the first time, where you can then use the weapon bench.  Of course, you could use the one at the Spectre office, or just choose the Predator, since you get that right from the start.

-------------

Use a "sub-optimal" squad composition.

To clarify, this requires some meta-knowledge, i.e. you already know as the player what you're going to go up against.

The idea is that you pick the squadmates you normally don't select.

Example:

Geth Dreadnought mission, (Tali has to come, assuming she survived), EDI is a good choice, because of her tech powers.

So bring Liara instead, where her biotics are less effective.

Basically, you go against your own thinking.  If you want THIS and THAT squadmate for a given mission, you DO NOT pick them, and then pick the ones you think "I don't want to bring them on this mission" instead.

-------------

Well, that's all I can think of at any rate.

How are any of those suboptimal?

Like, seriously. Engineer with Claymore is an unholy engine of destruction.

Granted, she has Inferno grenades as bonus power and mostly uses James as squadie(he's not specced into Explosive Burst for IA), and uses Liara, Garrus and James as squadies all the time, but that's just so there's more of those juicy fire explosions.

Thinking you're gimping Shepard by giving him/her heavy weapons is a newbie mistake, one I've been making for the longest time. In the end, it turns out it's quite the other way around.

And shotgun infiltrator? Seriously? They are probably stronger than sniper infiltrators, if anything.

Okay, I beat it.  I re-outfitted and respecced James to maximize his weapon damage (everything just shoots past him at me anyway).  And I dropped Wrex and grabbed Zaeed and specced him for max assault rifle damage and gave him a Typhoon as well.  So 2x Typhoons on squad.  Squad Disruptor for shields.  And then I set it to the Pain Train map.  There is a room where you have 3 rows of seats.  James behind row 1.  Zaeed behind row 2.  Me in the back with the Black Widow popping quick shots with Adrenaline Rush when anything enters the room.  There are billboard signs hanging from the ceiling that block any grenades from getting to you.  Everything is funneled through one doorway and into the face of 2x Typhoons, with me backing them up with a Black Widow.  Carnage combos once shields are taken down.

Still took me several tries.  The Vanguards and Infiltrators still get through.  Had to be quick to hit them with grenades and powers and focus fire them down before they got up in my sh*t and killed me.

Don't level up.  Reset yourself and your squad and do not level up weapons either.
