The criticism that really annoys me is the "old man" one. We're seldom told the canon age of characters, but if he is older than Cassandra, it isn't by more than a year or two. He is certainly younger than Leliana. It's just that he doesn't get the Ageless Female Makeover ™, so he's allowed to look his age. Varric is about the same age he is, and if Varric had a beard, he'd look just as grizzled. The reason this annoys me isn't that Blackwall looks 40. It's that Cassandra and Leliana don't. They should. Leliana's Song is set before Dawn of the Seeker, so both women would have been at least 18 in 9:21 Dragon. But standards of beauty being what they are, Maker forbid that a 40 year old woman should actually look her age. Ah, well, even now, some people age more gracefully than others. But don't slap the "old" label on Blackwall without applying it equally to Cassandra, Leliana, Varric, and Vivienne. And if you're going to say that to Vivienne, warn me first so I can get out of range.

To be fair, it doesn't just apply to Leliana. Loghain is allegedly in his sixties, but looks at least twenty years younger; younger, in fact, than he did in DAO. Cullen has the same thing going, and seems to age in reverse through all three games (or at least looks the same age that he did in DA2, if his facial hair was responsible in that game).

I'd say that Vivienne does look her age, personally.

Cassandra and Vivienne both appear to be mid-to-late 30's.

Blackwall could also be that age, but more "hard living".  He might look younger without the beard though.

Leliana and Cullen must be one of those fortunate people with really good genes.

Leliana is highly resistant to the Taint (you learn about this in the alternate future) so the good genes do apply to her.

As for Cullen, his good looks is due to the fangirls. He looked average in DAO and DA2.

This thread is offensive. Only wanting a person for sex!

How about wanting them for their inner beauty and feelings?!

That 's why I love the Cullen romance

FWIW, Cullen is 6-10 years younger than Cassandra. He was a very young knight in 9:30 Dragon, the year of the Fifth Blight. If he was 22, that was all he was. That would make him 34 in 9:42 Dragon.

DAO didn't have the extensive complexion sliders that later games had. Sure, with the toolset, you have a lot of control over how much each complexion gets applied in which part of the face, but Cullen was designed to meet "named NPC, but not a major one" character design criteria. Artists put more thought into his head morph than they did into Denerim Shopper #11, but not a lot more.

Cullen was 20 in DA:O, it is confirmed by the devolpers that he is 31 in DA:I, in Tresspasser 33.

Is age really a criticism against Blackwall? Really? That just seems so... lame.

Also, I do want to add that with Cassandra, even though she doesn't state her age, it is implied when she relates to the PC the events of Dawn of the Seeker, which you can ask about as part of the "getting to know you" dialogue. She states that she was a "young seeker" and that it was, "18, 20 years ago," so that certainly implies that she is approaching or at 40.

I will add that one of the reasons for some of the "making NPCs look their age" issues is that hair can't be anything other than a solid color. There are no highlights, or salt and pepper, or gray at the temples, and that sort of thing. Blackwall's romance tarot shows a bit of gray in his beard, and one of the concepts has some gray as well.

You raise some excellent points. I'm not sure it's necessary to tear down someone else's ship to make them, but in Blackwall's case - he gets way more than his share of hate from a very vocal part of the fandom - the desire to do so is certainly understandable. None of the romances are inherently more ethical than any of the others, as much as fans will argue otherwise. Everyone has a past. Some of the characters are just better at making it sound good.

Blackwall refers to himself as "old" here. "You make me sound like a dirty old bastard!"

I've been playing Witcher 3 for days and all I can hear is Blackwall. Now I'm tempted to romance him again (last time I romanced him I made him a GW and will NEVER do that again) lol but you can only dump him the first time you arrive at Skyhold. After that, you're stuck. Solas is still the worst when it comes to that. You can't officially dump him until Trespasser after he dumps you and by then the game's over

Another point in favor of Blackwall - His glorious beardstache can tickle the ladies in all the right places if he wags his chin in a certain way. Cullen stubble will only cause itch and irritation.

But is it sanitary? They don't call it a soupcatcher for nothing. :bandit:

Do you really want to see what that beard looks like if a lady's nether regions are.... moist? Cause I sure as hell don't.

I think it would probably look like a brush with transparent glue.

Anyway, back to the topic:

Poor Blackwall, what did he do to deserve being reduced to a sex toy  But yeah, as far as I can tell the romance locks are very hard to avoid in DA:I. It was a lot easier to do in DA:O, my Warden managed to 'accidentally' pork Zevran.

Honestly, my female Inq. at 30 looked and seemed too young for him . . . if you look at Nexus mods, he looks much younger without the face rug.

http://www.nexusmods...tion/mods/620/?

I would have loved it if maybe when he gets honest and comes to terms with himself later in the game, the need to hide behind the beard would have gone and we could see him as the very good looking guy he is.  The beard makes him look like an old mountain man in a shack.

Ah good to know. I had heard that his romance doesn't "lock in" the same way as the others, so f!Lavellan romancing him doesn't register her as "romanced" so the Dorian/Bull romance never initiates. Bull must be holding out hope against reason.

After Solas broke it off...I was doing my rounds (of conversations - get mind out of gutter) with everyone at Skyhold, and Cullen had a flirt option. I saved to see what would happen, once I pressed it, he responded and then I had the option "Start a romance with Cullen." I reloaded and didn't go much further with it, so I don't know if I actually could, but the option was there.

40? I thought he was supposed to be older than that even. Not that it matters. I mean...I would never romance Blackwall, not because he's too old - I can do Solas just fine and yeah...he's older than anyone- or even because he up and left or lied to our faces every day. I could forgive that. But because he feels like such a daddy to me. Mentor-like and just overall paternal. Blackwall will forever be my friend and gets to live his dream of becoming a real Grey Warden.

I have absolutely no issue with Blackwall's appearance. The man looks badass.

What I do find unattractive about him is his voice. Oh, and the baggy clothes. Those need to go.

It's different too, when romancing the Wall that the only time you see the female Inq. nekkid is in the sex scene with him. Also maybe the Sera romance? Not sure. But in terms of male interest this is the only scene where she is nude. Even the Iron Bull scene shows her fully clothed, which is odd, since they get interrupted and having both naked would have made more sense, really. Seems the Inq. just can't want to get dressed and move on. Only Blackwall is the one who gets to leave her naked (in the barn, no less!) Just wondered why this was designed this way.
