So...

I won't divulge how many times I have played through DA:O, DA:A, DA:2 and DA:I (and their various DLCs) suffice it to say that if there's a DA Anonymous I should probably join.

While DA:O answered any questions I may have had in the sequels and DLCs, DA:2 raised three that they never answered.  I have never read the books.  I have heard about them but haven't gotten them... yet.  Perhaps my answers lie with them, but as some of you good folk seem to have knowledge of the books, perhaps you might be of help.

1).  What was that noise and what was Merril doing when Hawke and the companions come upon her on the trail?

2).  What was Fenris expecting the box/crate in the house to contain.

3).  When asked how Sandal made the ice ogre, his explanation was, "Not Enchantment!"  So... if Dwarves cannot do magic and he did not use an enchantment, how was the ogre transformed into an ice sculpture?

I do recall one thread that mentioned that Sandal may have had mixed parents so that would explain #3 if that is true.

Merril may have been trying to repair the shard but one has to wonder why she would choose such a time and place to do something she knew would turn her clan against her.

Why does Hawke ask questions if they (the developers) never intended on answering them?

I know that these are petty questions and the answers do not affect the outcome of the game/story in any way, but should any of you wish to humor me and share your insight, I would appreciate it.

DA Anonymous?  Heck I'd need BioWare Anonymous I think because I'd have to add Mass Effect.  We can meet every Sunday, I'll bring the doughnuts.

I can't answer any of those...but now I'm wishing I hadn't read them cause they'll stick out like a sore thumb next time I play.   ;)

What was in that box Fenris wanted?  I just assumed it was a dummy, that he thought it may hold something but also wasn't surprised it didn't.

It's a good assumption that Merrill was fiddling with a shard.  I felt like she found a place to hide from the clan and was daydreaming, safely away from their glances.

But, somewhere, somehow, and at some point I'm sure I read a hint that dwarves could do magic.  Back in the day but they lost the power.  Was it in The Descent???  Something to do with Titans????  I just feel like that's lurking in the back of my brain, that there was a teaser that suggested it.  Which would be how Sandal got to the fade right?

Of course his parentage could more easily explain it, and I assume the writings in Trespasser hint at more to come from him.

I read The Stolen Throne just before my third run of DA:O.  It changed so much about my ideas of Ferelden and Orlais, Loghain and Maric.  You need to read that book.  :)

You should read the books if you've played the games so much (I need to join DA Anonymous too). I read the books recently and enjoyed them because of their DA connection.

I think Merrill had just cut her wrist or finger when Hawke came upon her, practicing blood magic as a way to work on her mirror. I haven't played DA2 in over a year but that's what I thought she was doing because she acted so guilty about something.

I do think Sandal is a mix of something...maybe dwarf/elf.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm remembering blood magic in DA2 as being red and well...bloody.  Spraying up in the air like when Merrill removes the barrier a few minutes after you meet her.

When Hawke first meets her it's more of a bright light, which made me think of the shard.

But as I say it's been a few months, I may be remembering it wrong.  :?

I'll have to play the game again, when I finish playing my current run of DAO, but I thought we couldn't see what she was doing, very well. Once we get to know her, I assumed she was trying to do something with her mirror pieces and maybe blood magic...just a little ****** of the finger maybe???

Yes, there is a lot of blood spewing with the crazy blood mages in DA2 but I thought Merrill was trying to be a sane, responsible blood mage.  (I never let her finish her mirror because I think she's dealing with something dangerous and even though I back the mages, I don't back blood mages).

edited to add: I think that's the first time I've ever been censored.  :P

I also think it was a shard Merrill had, and I think it was probably just foreshadowing for whatever storyline they had planned with her and the mirror. We never do get to see the consequences of letting her keep or destroy it. Or maybe there was more to the shards planned originally. Since they never made the expansion, we might never know.

It's never explained what Fenris thought was in the crate, but two popular theories are lyrium powder, or some kind of document with his identity/name/slave contract. Or it was just symbolism.

No it is never explain anywhere about Sandal, but my guess is there really is such a thing as dwarven magic. They do work with runes and have a deep connection to the stone, and to the Titans. So I'm guessing it's some kind of earth based or Titan magic they were foreshadowing. If he is half elf, then I guess that could work too, since half elves just take on the physical appearance of the non elven parent.

Why ask questions they don't intend to answer... I guess sometimes, things are just supposed to be a mystery, or an open ended question to make you think. Like what Fenris thought was in the box. But I wouldn't be surprised if they did originally intend to continue Merrill's story though.

What was Fenris expecting the box/crate in the house to contain.

A Pip-Boy. Then he realized he was in the wrong franchise, and cooked-up some ridiculous story about evil magisters and lyrium tattoos.

1) It was likely Merrill communicating with Audacity.

2) Don't know for certain, but I suspect Fenris was hoping for some information relating to his forgotten past.

3) We can only speculate, but Sandal's powers may somehow be connected to the Titans from the Descent DLC.

Yes, I have been thinking of expanding my addiction.  Then, instead of telling myself repeatedly that I will sleep but, "just let me get/do/kill one more thing," I'll be saying, "just one more chapter."

Is it not disturbing enough that I find myself uttering, "Maker's Breath!" when things get frustrating?  Is it not also bad that I now look at zombies and think immediately of Darkspawn? (ahem... not that I am a complete geek and watch zombie tv programs or anything like that).

Speaking of Darkspawn... who makes their armor?  It's not from fallen soldiers because they all wear the same style.  Maybe they have a Darkspawn Smithy?

Yeah, Temple of Mythal really seemed like Morrigan is filling in for Merrill. It's a shame the expansion was cut, we could have had a more coherent plot in DAI without sacrificing any of the content incorporated from the cancelled expansion.

For Sandal, didn't World of Thedas mention that he was found in the Deep Roads next to a strange mural? After Descent, it seems to indicate that maybe he was part of the Sha Brytol community or some other lost dwarven civilization.

1) Possibly, or else Merrill examining the shard to be sure the corruption was fully removed.

2) That's my suspicion too.

As for #3, I haven't played DAI yet, but this talk about the Descent DLC (and the well of Mythal) make me wish we'd gotten that expansion for DA2, because it would have helped tie up some of DA2's loose ends.

You can encounter a "Genlock Forge Master" while in the Deep Roads in Origins, so that would seem to imply that, yes, Darkspawn do in fact have their own made.

I had forgotten all about him.  I have no idea how as it was one heck of a fight if my memory serves me (which it obviously does not on occasion).  Thank you for the reminder.

I prefer 'Andraste's flaming knickers' myself :D, but yes, I should join the DA Anonymous myself.

As for your questions:  I thought that Merrill was looking at a shard from the mirror and it was reflecting the light and maybe she communicated with that demon, which would explain the whispers.

As for Fenris, it looked to me, as if hewas just curious. Maybe he hoped, to learn something about himself (documents etc), but he  himself said, that that was foolish, because that box was part of Fenris' trap, so his former master could not possible have put something in it.

As for Sandal, I always thought, that the devs are still trying to figure his special brand of talents themselfs - maybe he and his past will play a role later on. But I could live with Sandal remaining a mystery
