Of course it's counterproductive, especially for an extremely high risk special operations group like the Grey Wardens.

sending your  breeders to the front line doesn't work and isn't remotely logical in any feasible situation.

Huh? The Wardens don't replenish their numbers by breeding in the first place. They conscript.

If you are referring to Utha you need to take into account that she was with the Architect for the whole time, and who knows what the Architect did to her, exactly like Shianni they were both on the same mental state and SHiann was not even a GW.
If you are referring to Larius he was locked into a prison full of magical selas with another magister like The architect near him.
Those two examples are not well suited for the argumentation.

That's a fair point. Nevertheless, there are two examples of Grey Wardens becoming independent Ghouls, while we have zero examples of mindless GW ghouls, so I wouldn't rule CardButton's theory out yet.

Sorry for the necro but i had to post this.

TUK: Do Grey Wardens still do the Calling, now that they know about Broodmothers? That was a really terrifying revelation in the first game "Oh my god, any women who are down here in the Deep Roads get taken off to spawn horrible monsters!"

DG: They always knew about Broodmothers, but they didn't know where Broodmothers came from. Knowing that...wow, I hadn't really considered whether they'd stop doing the Calling. I think if anything it makes it more problematic for female Wardens to do the Calling. That may be something we could incorporate into the future. It'd be an interesting question. Let's say a female Grey Warden starts to hear her Calling and says "Well, my time has come" and the rest of the Wardens say no, you can't go. You're a woman. You don't deserve to take part in what has been long, for many centuries, held as an honorable tradition, as a way for the Grey Wardens to go out in a way where they retain...I don't know if you read The Calling, the novel. The reason they do the Calling is because there's a tipping point at which the corruption in them starts to affect them physically, so rather than become some kind of ghoul they want to die while they still have their humanity, doing what they've spent the majority of their life dedicated to, killing darkspawn, one last hurrah. To go to a woman and say "No, you can't have this honorable ending because of what might happen to you." I think that would be an interesting story. I think in the end it might be up to the individual Warden. I could definitely see a female Warden who would rather kill herself than allow for the possibility that she could be transformed into a Broodmother.

I wonder what conclusion they actually came to after they thought the whole process through. Considering the fertility issues, the resistance of Grey Wardens to the taint and the effect of Warden blood on Darkspawn, generally, it seems hard for me to believe that turning a female Warden into a Broodmother would be just as easy or come out with the same result as it would with just any woman. Would it inherently create something like The Mother, and produce offspring like her's? Or would it even be possible? I wouldn't have been surprised if there either was a high rate of failure in attempting this, or it couldn't be done.

But as for the women doing the calling, I'd hope they wouldn't just commit suicide as an alternative. There are always ways that a seasoned warrior could find an honorable death in Thedas without specifically fighting Darkspawn. It's not like they tend to be short for other conflicts. I'm sure they could find another productive way to go.

The Wardens believe it's possible:

"Isseya herself had decided long ago that she would become an abomination before she let the darkspawn carry her off to become a broodmother".

(Isseya is a Warden from Last Flight)

The Wardens believe it's possible:

It's unclear from that whether they know it's possible, or whether this character is just afraid it might be, though. Without further explanation, I wouldn't say this is proof that it can be done. The Wardens didn't even know where Broodmothers came from until very recently, so it's fairly logical to assume this is just a guess that it is possible after hearing rumors about how Broodmothers come about, generally. If it can be done, though, I would still wonder if they'd be a "normal" type, or like The Mother.

Edit: I looked this up to get more info and apparently this character is from the time period of the fourth blight, which directly contradicts what DG's interview said. Fair enough, since it wasn't established in-context of the material, I guess. Maybe the Wardens knew where Broodmothers came from and lost track of that information in the downtime? Either way, still more vague for specifics than I'd like for this one line.
