It's funny cause when I romance Cullen, I always tell him to keep the coin I pretend my Trevelyan wants her Commander to keep the coin so he can keep being lucky cause she doesn't want to lose him.. but truth be told, it's more like:

Trevelyan *suspicious look* "That's so kind of you to worry about me, Cullen...but I'd rather you keep it <3"

What she really thinks: "No way I am taking that...."

You can actually bring up the fact that so much terrible stuff has happened despite the coin to Cullen, and he will then say that he's also survived all of those horrible things, and met you, so it works. Like people have said, it's a matter of perspective.

 

I always accept the coin though. Makes him very slightly less worried Plus, before the final mission, you can comically reassure him that you'll be fine by reminding him you have it!

I, too, think, that this coin must really be lucky. Cullen survived a lot of  bad stuff ... still, I would probably suspiscious too
