So my character is a Qunari Warrior. I have a thing for maximising the manliness of my characters and trying to be a huge badass that can walk through brick walls and overall gives 0 fucks and is an unstoppable beast. For this type of character I think a bi-curious attitude or anything like it won't float. I'm kindof trying to create an ideal version of myself, so I can get immersed in what is going on.
So when I started playing DA:I I was a bit puzzled over who I can and cannot romance, so I did the guilty thing and looked it up.
My thought was this: Well, Josephine is boring, and Cassandra is way too butch.
Mind you, I made these rash judgements when we were still back at Haven.
Despite this, I was still somewhat interested in at least Flirting with Cassandra, but the second time I tried to flirt her she simply turned me down. After I started supporting the mages I started seeing more and more 'Cassandra disapproves' messages, and I thought to myself 'Well, so much about Cassandra'. At this point I did not realise how many opportunities I will have later to make up for it.
So I got a bit salty. I mean, Josephine is cute, but she's not that exciting (she's by no means a bad character, but I do think they pushed this diplomatic thing a bit too far with her). 'Man, romance in this game sucks'. I was wrong.
I started a romance with Josephine, simply because I thought no-one else is available to the kind of character I envisioned. The first thing that was interesting is how Lelliana had a go at me about how I might break her heart and all that. I was like 'chill, I got this, I'm not breaking anyone's heart'.
Well, guess what?
This is at the point when I'm about lvl 12-14ish, so I'm really exploring the world and what Skyhold can offer me. And very-very soon the character of Cassandra started opening up. First she inquired if I have anything going on with Josephine and I made it sound vague and asked if she's jealous. At this point I realised....my god, she's into me.
And later with Varric's book it all came together. Damn you Bioware, you lead me by the nose. You made me believe that Cassandra was all rough and butchy (I even thought to myself: Do you guys really have to try so hard to create a 'strong independent white woman who needs no man' character?), but when she started opening up and I saw her soft side she actually ended up being quite attractive. And who else could challenge the mighty Cassandra Pentaghast if not a giant Qunari warrior, the herald of Andraste and all that stuff? You see I don't like girls who try to dominate me, and therefore I saw Cassandra as a turnoff first. She did not seem feminine at all at first, but now she got me curious.
I saved my game, broke up with Josephine (not really a break up, it was only a kiss for fucks sake!!!), and talked to Cassandra.
And I made the right choice. When she dropped the act and confessed how she was desperate for a romantic man, her character came full circle and I immediately fell in love with her. It was amazing how she dropped the whole thing and just said it straight into my face what was it that she wanted. 9 out of 10 times I would disapprove of a woman being straightforward with a guy to such an extent, because, let's be real, they ain't like that, but it fit her character and the situation perfectly. She was deprived of love all her life. She lived a life of violence, and therefore grew a very-very hard shell. She wanted someone to comfort her but did not know how to go about it. It makes perfect sense!
At this point I was like 'please Biowere, please I beg you, put a sarcastic-funny edge to the date to make it feel more realistic'. A tryhard romantic date would have been terrible because we kinda agreed that it was going to happen, so it HAD to be a bit funny.
And they did. So they managed to make the Cassandra romance perfect.
Also, huge plus for showing the bewbs. I mean, we are adults for gods sake (I'm 23), can we please drop the taboos already?
So, thank you Bioware, you managed to make an interesting romance in a video game. With a character I never thought I'd be interested in. Kudos to you my friends.

With all the complaints I have about the romance in DAI, Cassandra was a very well done, I always do a guy romance if possible in a Bioware game, and Cassandra was the first character ever where I romance as my main simply because all the male options for the male inquisitor is just terrible, simply terrible. She's tough on the outside, but on the inside, she's a hopeless romance. It's just so sweet and endearing at the same time. I've always interested in her in DA2, and I'm glad that she didn't disappoint.

If your going the Straight male route you really only have two options available, Cassy and Josey, both of which are pretty good options to be fair, but yeah male characters do have far less options available to them. Males have 4: Josey, Cassy, Dorian and Bull while the Female Quizzy gets 6: Josey, Sera, Bull, Cullen, Blackwall (and if your and Elf) Solas.

Perfect depends on your definition I suppose.
I prefer straight romances that challenge you, and not this bed of roses.
A lot of the other romances have potential to be agonizing. There is no straight male LI that is anything other than soft words and wine. They bore me.
Prefer the gay male/female romances this go around.

The Solas one had a lot of tragic kick to it as well if your willing to play Fem-Elf, but yeah it terms of quality both Dorian and Sera are pretty spectacular. ![]()

I agree with actionhero, Josephine was boring, but Cassandra was MEANT to be desperate. But don't get me wrong, it wasn't easy. I didn't bed Josephine but I assume it would have took some work to get to that point. Cassandra fooled me for half the entire game, I think that makes her challenging enough?
I had to challenge my own beliefs and assumptions. What can possibly be more challenging in a video game?

Don't romance anyone, but try to with Sera. Also do Josephine's side quest and follow the steps she lays out for you. If you do, you will get the opportunity to have sex with a countess or some such title in exchange for her support of Josephine's plan. After this, feel free to romance Cassandra, then pump & dump her. Then just proposition Vivienne every once in a while.
Other than that, not much else in this game for straight guys.
EDIT: Sorry. Thought you were asking what romance path to take with your character.
As for my character, I knew Cass was a romance option since before the game was out, so I planned on romancing her. I would continue it only if she and my character had a connection. They did, and I thought Cassandra was well written. Hope she appears in DA4 with the Inquisitor.

Subverted your expectations, caught you by surprise, engaged you, and then gave you exactly what you didn't know you wanted.
That's fine writing right there.
I have to roll my eyes when I read on the forum that Cassandra is a flat character.

Cassandra is a very well done romance in deed but you need to do some sucking up to her (as in approval gains) in order to unlock personal quests and what not in order to secure a romance with her (which is why I assume you were getting denied).
Josephine is a good, old-fashioned G-rated "Disney" romance, if you like a little bit of drama, and leans more on the emotional/personal side of a romance (whereas Cassandra's is more physical if that makes sense).

You are right, this game the straight relationship sucks
Cassandra is basically *Edited* , she is cool but also a terrible hypocrite, and her sweet side is creepy.
Josephine is boring because she isn't a companion and hasn't a lot of interactions in the game, she even hasn't a sex scene.
I hope the next game give us more options.

I found her friendship path to be plenty engaging as well. All around Cass is one of the strongest characters in the game with or without the romance.

Cassandra has made me relies how horrible most of the human population is. People always start by throwing out words like butch and tranny. She looks like a woman who has trained and faugh for her whole life would look. I mean a gaming company finally gives us a real woman and not a Barbi doll and people are just horrible about it...

I like that Cassandra is tough. I have no problem with fighting for myself but i like having a girlfriend who could just as well push me aside and act as my bodyguard. I don't find anything wrong with Josephine's romance either. No need for a sex scene to make it a good romance.

Well put. Cassandra is beautiful and has a deep soul and full of personality but too many are quick to write her off as a typical man-hater or something and pay her no heed. She's one of the few "real women" like Aveline, Isabela and Wynne that I have encountered in gaming.

I Just wish she was an options for ladies as well.
She's the only fem character in the whole series that I want to romance, but I'd have to make a guy to do it. My canon guy belongs to Dorian and I have no desire to make another. Ah well.

I get the feeling that Bio didn't expect the tidal wave of straight male butthurt that adding the Cullen and Solas romances unleashed. Let's say they did see it coming, and decided to avoid it by adding one female and one male LI instead.
Which male romance gets cut? Solas or Cullen?
Who's the additional female? Harding? Vivienne? Leliana?

I don't understand why they put in limitations on romances at all. Sure, in real life folks have their preferences, but this is a game. If they are a romance for one, they should be a romance for the other. However, I do have a problem seeing Cullen as a romance option for a male Inquisitor and think it should have been Josephine and not Cassandra that was chosen to be heterosexual.
I pointed out to a friend of mine who also plays DA:I that while Solas prefers female elves only, that same option is not given to a male elf Inquisitor. There is only one elf to romance and she isn't into males. Dwarves and Black human males and females have it just as bad. I realize that to satisfy everyone would be a tall order to fill, but they could try.
I wish they would put in a bit more of the flirtation they had in DA:O and allow your character to play a little hard to get. For instance, as a male with Morrigan and a female with Alistair, I got the ball rolling with friendship and flirts, but it wasn't me who initiated the kissing and the sex, it was them. In DA:2, I liked how once in a while we could express affection for a friend (Acts 1 and 2 only) without having a significant other think the wrong thing and getting upset about it. Sometimes what they signified as a "flirt" was what I would have said to a good friend just because I care. In this game the for instance can be seen in a conversation with Dorian where the "flirt" was "Are you alright?" That's flirting?
Even though we saw a bit of her soft underbelly in DA:2 I was prepared to not like Cassandra. But once I got to know her, I saw a little of me in her. Tough because she has to be, guarded because of her experiences, keeping people at arms length to keep from being hurt, yet not really wanting to be seen as tough, guarded and standoffish. After that, romancing her was inevitable. I was not disappointed.

^ Sorry, the "Are you all right?" for Dorian is not a flirt. That is a star option (not a heart) in the post-tavern scene. The flirt in that scene comes at the end when the Inquisitor can say, "Good things," after Dorian speculates on what you think of him now [after the tavern incident]. However, I tend to agree as I don't really see how that spoken line -- "I don't think less of you, more if possible," -- leads to a kiss a moment later, since it was not said in a suggestive manner.
Also, thinking of them as flirts is a bit inaccurate, since as you say, they're not all flirty remarks. But the heart icon is used to show the intent your character is expressing when you say whatever line, just as the tear icon is sorrow and so forth. I actually really like the more subtle flirts in the game, and the very first one you can use with Dorian is one of my favorites since it basically comes down to a vocal shift rather than actual words.

It's a star?
It's like the mountains all over again.
To explain, I once lived in a cabin in the wooded mountains of NE Washington State. It is very rustic there. So rustic that in the thirteen years I lived there, nothing changed except for the scanners the local grocery store installed. Most people, myself included, had no electricity, indoor plumbing or running water. To see a movie, eat at Burger King, shop at a department store one had to travel at least 55 miles. The entire county had a population of 1500 people. If you didn't live within three miles of town, you had no cable. I had a small 11" B&W television which I connected to a deep cycle battery and could pick up one station. Thankfully I had a VCP which could also be connected directly to the battery so I could rent movies once in a while. Let me tell you, if you watch a B&W television long enough, your mind starts adding colors. Years after I left, I was amazed at how wrong I had gotten those colors when I would watch reruns or re-watch movies.
It appears that I have romanced Dorian enough that I am now substituting hearts for stars in my memory of our conversations.
I stand corrected. Thank you for setting me straight.
And I apologize for hijacking the thread with a personal story in a subject meant to congratulate Bioware for a romance well written. Continue with your praise for it was very well written.
