For this question we are looking solely at these two despite other options we are again focusing on these two, so think of it as the better between these two as oppose to some preference between hetero or homosexualilty. This isn't a attempt to sway anyone between either preference in there playthroughs but a observation in who really seemed like a better romance for Femshep.

In my opinion I think Thane was a far better romance for Femshep. He was confident, reliable, experienced with no real hang ups to other than the things he couldn't control such as his illness. Outside of wanting to save his son from going down the wrong path which is admirable to me, more so than just wanting to seek revenge without knowing the full reason why you were betrayed and potentially murder someone just because you are some cold blooded Turian war machine.

Physically: Thane

He looked closer to human than Garrus, could eat the same things Femshep ate, was definitely more agile/flexible vs Garrus ridged but famed reach. lol There was also the fact that Thane is a humanoid space frog man, Shepard licks/kisses him and potential psychedelic hallucinations could happen, okay that came from a comic strip I saw once but I thought it was funny. I imagine Shepard kissing Garrus would be like kissing a pterodactyl.

Emotionally: Thane

Not a lot to go on, but Thane seemed more the type to understand your feelings and have something kind to say or at least know what to say at that time. Garrus was awkward and I get it, that's what a lot of people liked about him, especially the womenfolk. Thane also has a pet name for Shepard, Garrus won't even call you by your first name. :P

Dependability: Garrus, only because Thane is freaking dying!!! That's not even a fair comparison. In their prime though, I have to imagine being a professional Assassin pays a lot more than a C-Sec officer. Thane could be away for a few days or weeks but he always remembered to bring home a souvenir.

Ending: Thane... You both die so.. reunited in the Afterlife?

Didn't Thane have a wife? It would put him in quite an awkward situation if all 3 of them meet in the afterlife.

I have never done a FemShep playthrough, so my opinion may not be as valuable as others. I have seen the full romance videos on YouTube for both Garrus and Thane. Thane's romance looks, by far, the most emotional. Garrus's romance looks more fun than Thane's, as he is a humorous character, and he is present in the Citadel DLC.

Thane was my first romance, and I thought it was a really deep and emotional connection, but then I tried Garrus and felt it was more fulfilled because he's not romancable in ME1 and it's as if you watched a friendship grow into love. I also never let my Shepard die if I romance Garrus.

Romanced or not, I always found Thane to be a good friend to my Shepard and that connection still remained between them even if he's just her friend. There's just something there that could have been more if she hadn't chose someone else.

I find both suit Shepard and it depends on if you want a tragic yet beautiful romance with someone you just met, or a happy ending where you fall in love with your best friend.

I have romanced them and understood their appeal but I'm still a constant Kaidanmancer since he's the only one who felt right for my FemShep. I've tried but they're still not my cup of tea.

In ME2, The first thing Thane tells you was that he's dying. Then he talks about how he still have perfect memory of having sex with his long dead wife and he have a grown son which he neglected and this is his true regret. I do notice that Thane still have a crush on Shepard and calls her Siha but I find that it agonize him so much if I make him fall in love with her, especially when he barely had more than a year to live. In ME3, I felt like he hated that his body was slowly killing him and I think that's the reason why he run toward Kai Leng's sword. He wanted to die a warrior's death, not wasting away. He's so much more peaceful and I felt romancing him sort of mess him up with additional baggage. And he had a wife and he believed he would be reunited with her upon death... remember the perfect memory thing. Awkward.

As for Garrus, I still think he's far more suited with Tali than with FemShep. They always had a love hate relationship. Garrus was prejudiced against her kind and he's an idiot not to realize that Tali had a crush on him (Fleet and Flotilla... ding ding). I thought they're really cute flirting together. Tali becoming more forward and Garrus realizing her interest. Face of an angel. Sharing dextro-chocolate. Drunken Tali and Mr Vakarian. I know that people hate this pairing out of jealousy but I feel its a nice touch that these two find each other. I love playing matchmaking.

At first I didn't want to reply to this post because I think it's very subjective depending on people's tastes but well, here I come because I don't really understand and totally disagree.

Just putting the facts here from my own game :

My Shepard was always there for Garrus. Helping him going out of C-sec, helping him to keep things in perspective because he was a bit too radical. Saving his life on ME2, helping him again with all she had for his loyalty mission, she also was a moral support during all ME3 with his strategic decisions and with his lost familly etc ... They have a real connexion during the 3 games (I even remember him tolding her she was his only friend on the whole galaxy) and I love how the friendship from ME1 change into something more intense and personal, it's very well done~

and now tell me what Tali did for Garrus to be more "suitable" than Shepard ? absolutly nothing.

If it's because they have that dextro-type thing that make quarians and turians closer than other species (you write about the dextro chocolate /  and Fleet and Flotilla), it's not a big deal.... and just put that out of the grid for one second and think again, tell me what they really have in common or what she did for him ?  nothing much than another character like Liara, for example.

After if it's just a question of personal taste (you like Kaidan, I hate him and killed him with pleasure on Virmire  :P  so we have various desagreements I see), I respect your opinion, you're free to like this pairing, but don't tell me Shepard is not suited for Garrus because she really is, physically and sentimentally to me faaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more than Tali ~ ;)

Ah~ subjectivity, I tell you !

I tend to have my first playthrough romances reflect my own life choices. I had a best friend that turned to love and we've been married for almost 6 years now. So my ideal romantic situation is friends first, slowly turning to attraction and love. I love how Shepard and Garrus tease each other relentlessly. I tried to romance Thane, but he was too brooding and had too much baggage for me.

I think Garrus is best suited for Femshep, in my opinion. But, had we been able to romance Joker, I think I would be singing a different tune. :)

I agree with you on Thane, I tried to romance him a little but... No... not the same feeling I had with Garrus ~ So I won't force myself to put my Shepard on someone else's arms just for trying. I'm a Garrusmancer forever it seems !

Also many of my friends would agree about Joker. One of her was so cursed, she loved Joker and  Mordin on ME2, 2 characters you can't have as a LI -_-

I also tried to romance other people in ME2 but it just wouldn't take. Garrus romance in ME3 is just so rewarding so I'm glad I didn't romance anyone else. I really couldn't!

I think Joker / Femshep would have been awesome and hilarious. I hated that they gave us that little tease in ME3 in the bar, and Joker shoots her down. :(

Yes, me too, ME3 is awseome for Garrus Romance ~ And the dlc are very nice and add many cute sequences or just lovely sentences <3

And for the bar with Joker, oh yes, my friends  : "OMGGGG I can try !!!" and... were disgusted ^_^ Honestly I felt sorry for them.

Somehow I had expected replies like this would come up eventually.

Are you angry that Garrus wanted to share his chocolate to Tali? The same chocolate that could kill your Shepard if ingested? Personally, I really don't envy Shepard having to take antihistamines, analgesics and antichaffing gel just to touch and sleep with someone she loves. I am already allergic to my pets and being dependent on these drugs always make me cranky.

People don't need to solve someone's personal issues or kill people to make them fall in love with you. This is what happened between Garrus and Tali who fell in love if unromanced. Garrus was tracking a lead toward Tali in ME1 but she didn't need saving anyway. He wasn't her knight in shining armor. Even so, they have some sort of argument together in ME1 and in ME2, it was Garrus who tried to reach out to her but instead she ignored him. In ME3, Tali revealed that her coldness was due to his insensitivity in ME1 and he apologize properly to her which she accepted and they eventually warm up to each other and flirt which accumulates to finding both of them kissing in the main battery room. It was a trilogy-long love story and no headcanons-required.

Garrus is just as killable as VS but he is the true optional character in trilogy. Don't recruit him in ME1, let him die in ME2, everyone in ME3 react like Garrus never existed. There's even additional scenes, dialogue replacements and a lot of additional ambient dialogues with everyone in the ship. You should try it sometimes.

As a lover of all things Garrus, I find this monstrous.  :o

But, I can see some people doing this, and that's ok.

Personally, I find it more encouraging to let Thane die in ME2.....you know....because he's dying anyway.

Wouah.

Just wouah.

1 / Maybe it will surprise you but I'm really happy if an unromanced Garrus (or Tali for maleshep) don't finish alone in the end of the trilogy ~ I'm not the pathetic garrusmancer you seem to think I am, sorry to disappoint you ~ (it seems to be a very sensible subject on the ME community, am I right?).

2/ my shepard lives her love just fine, don't worry   Mordin told her she might have problems and... she really seems to have none (did you do the romance BTW ?).

3/ What bother me in your original post and with your answer is that you just seems to deny all the good things that happened in 3 games between 2 characters. Well, your choice, but I also have the right to say I disagree ~

And for the rest, like "don't recruit garrus, he dies blablabla" ... what's the relation with what I wrote ? well, no thanks I won't try, I don't see the point to let a character I truly like die like a piece of ****  :)  But have fun !

I do not deny anything. These are just the facts that does exist in the game : Garrus did fall in love with Tali. Tali did fall in love with Garrus.

Turians and Quarians were the only sapient dextro-protein alien in the galaxy. In that aspect, they are biologically-compatible. Even if Tali may get sick from Garrus' germs but they could lip lock for as long as they wanted. Did you know what it feels like to have a constant allergy reactions? Risking death due to an anaphylactic shock kinda ruined the believability in my department. And I have romanced Garrus but I am still immune to his charms. Sorry. Still not my cup of tea and my FemShep deserved better. Plus, I was surprised with the amount of trying to get out of the relationship dialogues with him in both ME2 and ME3.

You saw my preference for Kaidan and stated with "I hate him and killed him with pleasure on Virmire" and yet you ranted that I was being mean because I had no problem having Garrus killed or absent in my trilogy. FYI, the biggest lie in the game was the fact that there is Shepard without Vakarian. He does not contribute to EMS at all. His presence doesn't affect the Genophage arc. His lack of presence actually improved Liara and Traynor's romance. His combat abilities doesn't make him a good support especially in high difficulties. Either way, resolving Saleon and Sidonis wasn't even required to make him survive through the Omega-4 relay. And even unloyal, he still behave the same in ME3. Doesn't make a difference really... unlike certain squadmates who still die in ME3 if they survive ME2 being unloyal.

Thane's death actually have more impact in the main narrative than Garrus. With Thane, Kirrahe or the Councillor could die, if the later die, Udina could fabricate that Shepard killed the Councillor so that VS could shoot you. You still lose a lot of war asset without Thane.

ok let's clear things once for good  ;)  :

1/ it's perfectly fine if you don't like Garrus~ believe me I'm not trying to make you like him, we had that other discussion on MEA where I clearly saw you don't like him that much (still need to compare the french and english voices!). Again it's FINE... And about Kaidan, I'm really sorry (really, I am), I just told that because I really don't like him but it was certainly not against you or anything. Also the game ask you to chose between him and Ashley, you have no other option when you actually can save everybody on ME2.

Please read my first post here : we all have different tastes and it's totally subjective. Nobody here is right or wrong, it's just a discussion about what we like or not, and comparing facts. We clearly don't see Garrus and Kaidan the same ways.

2/ about the tali/garrus thing, you see that a different way than I am because, in my game, it never happened and tali is actually perfectly normal with me or Garrus. She's a very good friend, as usual, and never ever asked anything about Garrus. And when they talk, they just talk like normal friends. And think about it, it's just natural. Garrus is Shepard's boyfriend, period. She just lives her life on her side. What  I even find hilarous is that she told me to be careful when Dr Michel gave him dextro chocolate (and  I'm pretty sure Dr Michel really like Garrus since ME1 if you want to know  ).

What you have on your main game is not what I have on mine, you should know about that since you tried the romance too ~  so you see, both of us are right.

I love my romance and you're also free to like the other side when both are unromanced and can be together in the end of ME3.

People always argue for those kind of stuff, I don't. This is 2 differents stories, you like yours, I like mine. The only thing I told you is that you seem to totally deny all the good things in the shepard/garrus romance because (now I know) you tried and you didn't like it and have a totally different vision than mine. Its ok, I can hear everything but I don't have to agree with your point of view  ~

3/ Yes I know about allergies and I even could write a book about them if you really want to know. I had to go to hospital under intravenous infusion because I could have died. Guess what ? I won't let those kind of stuff ruin my life for a second and I always find a way to workaround the problem, this is the kind of person I am :)  Back on game : this allergy problem is not only for turian, it's also concerning quarians and drell (and they are not dextro). Mordin says it could happen, but not it will happen for sure. Considering what I see on the game, my shepard is just perfectly fine and never needed to have an intravenous infusion like me  :P

I watched the other romances (tali, thane) on Youtube and it seems everbody's just fine. Shepard is so immortal

So I just hope I'm clear with everything here, also english is not my native langage, I do my best to find the best words for what I'm trying to say, I hope it's alright.

You don't like Garrus as a character/romance but I love him and it's fine, same goes for you loving Kaidan and me disliking him (sorry again if I hurt you about this)... As long as we both had fun with our own games, it's alright even if we never agree on many things, don't you think ?

I'm one of those guys that feels Kaidan is the most appropriate romance for femshep. I feel its the best written, most natural, and I like Kaidan's shy approach towards femshep. Also, I kinda sorta want to vicariously live through Kaidan at times. ;)

I don't know why, but Garrus and Thane both feel more like combat buddies rather than true romances. But I do think Thane's is a bit better overall. It has stronger scenes, and femshep actually crying after watching his vid is so well done its ridiculous. And the final scene after the party is also da bess. Its very bittersweet. And personally, killing Garrus just feels... wrong. And I think Tali is the best romance for broshep by far so Garrus doesn't get with her. But I also like Miranda's romance so they do end up getting together sometimes too.

The only person I was emotionally-attached to was FemShep. I've killed her in my first trilogy playthrough and I was forever traumatized by it. I could kill off everyone including BroShep but not her. She's what made Mass Effect to me. But I've played the trilogy enough times to appreciate how ME3 responded around various choices and consequences, even killed LIs have some carry-through. Geth-sided Talimanced BroShep is possibly the worst (similar to one of my DA2's romanced-Anders PT where I had to kill him) and romanced-Miranda's death was heartwrenching.

I would have preferred Thane more if he wasn't a character created with a certainty of death. There were a bunch of his dialogues that I love which was romance gated especially the part where he revealed what Siha means. I really like the rejection lines where FemShep said she couldn't replace Irikah for him and that she wasn't strong enough to lose someone she love again and he was being completely understanding about it. But I felt he was so much peaceful if unromanced. He had no delusion of himself, he knew death was coming for him and he hated that he was dying slowly because of his disease. Its quite Shakespearean that he choose his death even if it meant rushing recklessly toward Kai Leng. I think the tears in the DLC was a nice touch but it wasn't comparable to how they animate Liara crying (especially in ME2 and ME3).

--

@Scarlett : I have no intention or have any hard feelings against FemShep/Garrus pairing or romancers. I'm sorry that you felt offended or that you're under impression that I'm personally attacking you because of your preferences. I'm not belittling what your FemShep did to gain Garrus' affection, you're free to like whoever you want or to interpret your preference however you want. It was not up to me to decide or judge.

Everyone has a different Shepard, so one might feel more better for her than the other.

For Thane I had a FemShep who was a Spacer and War Hero so it felt as if she was able to teach him that there are other ways, and he in turn showed her another way to view war. Both were religious and caring and seemed to connect. She always saved everyone, and never abused a suspect or hurt anyone for fun. She was too focused on saving everyone, and Thane calling her Siha seemed to fit. When he died she turned down all other offers and stayed true to him.

My current FemShep romanced Garrus. She started off not trusting him, then grew to become trusted friends in ME2 and after Thane told her about what his wife did for him when they first met, she realized her actions in stopping Garrus from killing Sidonis may have had deeper feelings behind them, so she approached him and suggested blowing off steam together. Quickly she realized his feelings for her went deeper than that and so did hers, so by ME3 she confeesed her love for him and his for her. This Shepard was a Colonist and Sole Survivor who was good and saved many, but had a slightly ruthless side to her when it came to Batarians and cruel people. She seemed to fit Garrus best.

If I switched up my Shepards and had the pure Paragon romance Garrus and slightly Renegade one romance Thane, it wouldn't have fit because they weren't compatible based on how I developed them.

Its funny, I think I've literally played through the trilogy and killed everyone BUT Garrus. On my first playthrough ever I killed my femsehp unknowingly. I was upset for a day. I have a current femshep run in ME3 that I have stopped at Rannoch that I also plan on letting die. But I've been away from that run for some time now because I'm obsessed with Dragon Age Origins. Totally into the Morrigan romance at the moment. I find this romance more believable than most of the ME romances so far.

But I digress. I've killed off my broshep and everyone else too. I never really experienced Tali's or Miranda's death as a love interest. I have seen both death scenes, but I'm unsure if Tali gets any special mention from the cast after her death like Miranda. I know Garrus mentions something about her being an angel behind the mask, but that might not be a bit appropriate if your broshep was with her. Speaking of Miranda, for some reason, I find rejecting her in ME3 to be really sad. It made me feel bad when I saw it. Also made Miranda a ton more likable too.

And I don't think I will ever like anything related to Liara. I don't like her character arc, I don't like how she's too involved in everything, and how we're supposed to sympathize with this character when I don't. When she cries in Shadow Broker DLC I don't hug her for example. And I think I'm going to do one last playthrough with broshep before I give the series a good long break. And I am not going to romance Liara. So the Thane scene was more meaningful for me because I like his character better. Plus, the reason why his romance is more powerful is because he's dying soon.

You summed it up pretty well for me OP. Thane as the more look wise and emotional wise and Garrus for the more dependable wise. The thing with Garrus is that I really liked his romance a lot but he was too much alien like for me. I am just not attracted to aliens. At least not THAT much alien look a like. Otherwise he had the most content and he had a lot of connection with her, I liked it a lot.

Thane. Garrus is like .... well, he's like family. Just like Anderson. Anderson is like a father figure and Garrus maybe the big brother. Can't imagine dating him with any femshep.
