This is really annoying me. Playing on hardcore (before i knew it was basically a waste) and Vanguard sucks ass so far. Charge is basically useless if there are more than two enemies as you basically charge into certain death. This wouldn't be so bad if you could charge back to safety relatively quickly. But I can't ! what am i doing wrong here, I cannot charge at all unless it's at a targeted enemy.

use cyro. i play as a vanguard, i cyro a baddie, charge to shatter him, then the 2nd guy gets shottie to the face. make sure you whittle them down if there is a large group, or you will still charge into death

I am doing pretty well so far, like action jim said use cyro and when you use charge you pretty much break the opponent in pieces.

I understand how you feel though, but I do very much like the vanguard in this one. I use shockwave to knock enemies down, quickly shoot them turning them in ice and charge them with a shottie to all their faces. It would definetly be better if vanguards had a barrier but maybe it will be like ME1, beat the game as an adept and get barrier for other bitoic classes? not so sure..

I just finished my first playthrough with a Vanguard, and from the halfway point on I completely ignored my Charge ability. Like you said, using it usually ends up with you dying. The additional shields just aren't enough to negate the added damage you take out of cover. I just used Shockwave and Slam, and went for Assault Rifle training ASAP so I could have something to use at range. Being in close range in ME2, even on low difficulty settings, is the best way to end up taking a dirt nap.

I'm playing on hardcore and so far haven't had any issues with my vanguard. Using the heavy pistol to get ranged headshots works great and when I get the number of enemies down to something manageable I use charge and shotgun to the face. If I want to use charge when there are lots of enemies I just make sure to charge the ones behind cover. I charge, shotgun them to death, then just take their cover and charge the next guy behind cover. Helps that my companions are a soldier and tech so that I can cryo freeze and concussive shot for crowd control as well.

p.s. Why is hardcore a waste?

Yeah that was the first thing I upgraded. One point in ammo, the rest went to charge until it was maxed. Love me some slo-mo. Will try out the larger area on my next vanguard.

The class video did NOT show you to be able to charge to safety. As for the "uselessness" of charge, realize its not supposed to be a "win" button, it has to be used correctly and tactically especially at the early levels of the power.

Saying it's useless is like saying that Pull is useless because it doesn't work against shields and armor. There is a time for every power and you have to learn to use them effectively. I died alot when I used charge but kept trying it until I figured out the times to use it.

Some general advice I've found works.

- Don't charge right away, wait until there is either only one enemy left (with no shields and armor). or several weaker enemies. Charge is more of a mop up power rather than an inital offense weapon.

- Make sure your weapon is fully reloaded before you charge. Can't tell you how many times I made that mistake.

And a nice trick to charge. If your in a larger fight and you see an enemy near cover, behind his fellows who is rather isolated... charge, kill, get behind his cover and flank use it to flank the others as your squad mates move forward.

Does Cryo freeze shielded/armored enemies? If it does, I've been playing Vanguard the hard way. <.<

if you run into the center of a group of enemies your going to die, whether you walk there or "charge" there.

some good advice thx, guess u can charge away when charge is higher lvl, should have sunk points into that from the get go. i meant that it was useless until you get the crowd down to one or two enemies, which to me is not fun, pistol sniping, meanwhile the main reason i became a vanguard (the power of charge) IS useless in situations where there is a large attack force or the enemies are on some unreachable ledge. I'm sure it would be much easier with a more powerful charge and/or easier difficulty.

Meh, achievements don't mean squat to me, what matters is fun. And even though I've been a die hard play it on the hardest difficulty kind of guy for most of my life at this point it's just getting tired. Most game companies don't know how to make a hard mode, they know how to make an irritating mode. Gimping the PC while giving obscene bonuses to enemy shields/barriers/health isn't making the game hard, it's making the game CHEAP. It's why I don't plan on playing on insanity on ME 2. I did on ME 1 and it was just a chore. The AI was just as stupid, their weapons just as garbage, it was just they all had access to immunity spam.

It's why I play on hardcore. I think it's a better balance between difficulty and cheese.

Don't forget your squad? Normally I will shockwave/throw/pull/concussive shot a few enemies then use charge as a mop up ability

Use effective crowd control and coordinate with your squad. It's a lot easier to survive a Charge if Jacob Pulls a bunch of guys and Tali hacks a mech, for instance. Also, you don't have to attack the enemy you charged. After you knock somebody over, shoot his friend in the face and then turn back to finish off the guy you charged. Also, the two evolutions make all the difference in even the most poorly executed Charge. There's not much to kill you if you knock over an entire squad of enemies, and if you've got Heavy Charge then the guy you hit is probably flying through the air while his friends are currently so slow they still have their backs to you.

There's this thread in ME General.

Vanguard has been pretty sweet for me.  Try pairing it with Barrier
Low FPS will interfere with charge.  I fixed it and now it owns

You may also look at mouse tweaks in this thread
