So i was wondering..
I just created my 3rd and final playthrough because i wanted to do every class and a diffrent race each time.. and i turned on some trials for this run because i kinda know every region by now.

Do you like them?
And which do you use?

I personally like trials its gives a nice dimension to the game in terms of difficulty. Especially when you have done the game a few times already. Some also make the game more realistic.

I have the following turned on:
-Even ground: all mob scale to your level
-Walk sofly: occasionally a mob would be promoted with special skills and passives
-Bear upgrade trial
- the you lose focus each time you travel trial

Also i play on Hard

I like the trials a lot and I use all of them but Fair Weather Friends. So far, I've only played on Normal but will probably play on Hard for my last playthrough.

Normally just go even ground and walk softly. They are good enough for me.

The following are my favorites on Nightmare:

Even Ground: eliminated the problem of over leveling.
Grizzly End: I like random mini boss fights.
I would use the focus reset trial, but I don't use focus abilities anymore.

I quite like having all of them on, except fairweather friends. Focus reset was mandatory to stop the feeling that I was cheating. (It still felt like I was cheating...)

I have to admit, the prologue pride demon was pretty damn tough with a 2h warrior. Mainly because I also have a thing whereby if my inquisitor goes down, I have to reload immediately. In fact, prior to DA:I, I would reload if any teammate went down in a DA/ME game. Anyone else have this habit? Or is it just a personal idiosyncrasy?

I've used most all of them save fair weather friends and the one that remove supply caches.  But most of the time I don't need supply caches.  So maybe I should use it.

Sometimes I reload, especially if I die due to me (the player) being stupid. Other times, if I don't want to do the whole fight again, I just have someone res/revive me (the character) and go from there.

As for trials, I've used them all at one point and got all the achievements except for one, which I should get this time around. In my current NM game, I'm using Even Ground, Walk Softly, Take It Slow, Grizzly End, and a couple others. Actually, I think the only ones I don't have on are Fair Weather Friends and the no supply caches since I already got both of those achievements.

I'd say the only two "necessary" ones are Even Ground, to prevent over-leveling and keep things moderately challenging late in the game, and Take It Slow, to avoid maxing out XP with a lot of game left to go.

Nightmare, before Skyhold/specialization:

  • Even Ground
  • Grizzly End

After specialization, add Walk Softly. If I'm gonna get awesome new abilities, the bad guys ought to also!

I'm intentionally not using Take It Slow because I want to level up quickly.

I'm finding Nightmare Even Ground used in conjunction with strict Golden Nug discipline very effective at making the game just the right amount of challenging. I don't craft anything that's more than 3 item levels higher than my character's XP level. For XP level restricted gear, 3 levels difference between the item and the XP level is about average -- that is, an item that can't be used until level 9 XP typically has an item level of 12.

Routine random battles, like bandits in Crestwood, are actually a threat. I have to use resources like healing potions and grenades to keep from having a full party wipe, which is unheard of at XP level 9.

I am rethinking my current use of Take It Slow for that reason. I am running out of low level stuff to do in the Hinterlands, and I'm already tired of bears! :P

Really? Even if you can just resurrect yourself with a companion, you'd just reload and redo the fight? O_o
Wow. That's.. strange, but interesting :D I wouldn't be arsed to do that...

I do not use Take It Slow and Rub Some Dirt on It. I use the rest on nightmare from start to finish.

Same here. I can see the attraction of them for those that want a bigger challenge. Personally i'm happy with the games difficulty and challenge without them. I only have them becauseit's part of the Trespasser package but I was  only interested in the story not the trials

Yep... I'm weird like that :D

It just feels too wrong to me if my main character goes down, like that should be a game over.

Wow realy odd to still see alot of ppl using the slower level speed though..

Why would you use it? You kinda get forced to do every zone then, right? which i only did in my completionist run

. I think that starting the hinterlands can be quite challenging with walk softly on (not using golden nug) but now that i have used the golden nug it has become easy.. so i switched to NM

Totally agree.. trials with nightmare makes the golden nug feel more helpfull... it usually makes me feel like im cheating..

Do watch out for quest levels though..those can still be overleveled and you will only get like 100xp where you normally get 800..

thats why i skip the forbidden oasis and exalted plains.. i dont like the quest there plus that im usually too high for getting any xp there anyways

I often do that too, though for a different reason.

Whenever one of my party members falls in combat, I assume I did something fundamentally wrong at the beginning of the fight. Continuing the fight would put me at a double disadvantage: I'm one character down, and my setup was botched from the start. I figure it's better to scrap the whole fight and restart, so I can learn how to do it properly.

I have done a couple of "short" runs where I only did what was necessary to meet a certain objective, and I hated it. I hated having unfinished quests in my journal. I hated having icons still on the map for things to do that I didn't do and black spaces for where I didn't go. I hated running past loot or avoiding encounters so to not get too much XP. I like wandering and doing everything, every time.  Yes, even the shards and mosaics. :)

Even Ground
Grizzly End

That's it so far, and it was mostly so I could get Trials rewards with the least amount of difficulty. Going forward I think these will be the only trials I seriously play with if I don't end up liking Walk Softly all that much.

Even Ground + High Dragons = :(

I haven't had this much trouble with the Ferelden Frostback since my 1st playthrough

Even Ground is awesome! Makes each zone in my current replay challenging. I haven't used Take it slow (the only reason I could see was to get that "Skyhold at level 5"-achievement, and that wasn't interesting), but I'm starting to rethink since I'm level 19 already, and still only at Adamant.

The only thing that bothers me is that enemy elite spell casters can be a real h*ll to take down since they now can take a punch and can recast Barrier almost indefinitely.

Take It Slow can make pre-Skyhold a bit tough but it really helps later on to keep you from maxing out before you finish all the DLC. This is especially the case if you have Even Ground on, since you will always get XP from killing enemies. :)

I think this is what I normally do.  I can't remember (it's been a while) but there was one I had to disable every so often.  I'd come across a mage barrier that was freaking unbreakable even if I respec'd to the opposite element.
