You mean as in those static barriers? I actually think that's just a bug (that may have come with the latest patch, same as trials). I tried breaking one in Exalted Plains, and it just seemed to regenerate as fast as I could deal damage. Then I just reloaded, and it melted away like butter in the sun.I think this is what I normally do. I can't remember (it's been a while) but there was one I had to disable every so often. I'd come across a mage barrier that was freaking unbreakable even if I respec'd to the opposite element.
What trials do you use?

I'm trying to use all of them except the half xp one. The 1 HP health potions one is annoying because injured NPCs will keep drinking infinite pots.

That's Walk Softly.
I like Even Ground and Grizzly End as on from game start, but others I think should be used on a more case-by-case basis or only for specific achievements or victory conditions.

Yeah, now that I"ve completed the challenge, I turned off Rub Some Dirt on It and I'm going to leave it off. I can disable potion use from the tactics menu if I feel strongly about it, but if I'm on my 4th time through a fight, I don't want Bull guzzling health pots like Gatorade because he's still low on health after drinking one.

When I did the achievement for Rub Some Dirt On It, I changed everyone's tactics to reserve the full number of potions. No sense using them if I only get 1 hp out of it. Turned out to not be a problem. I disabled the trial as soon as the draqon fight was over. ![]()

Mainly because I also have a thing whereby if my inquisitor goes down, I have to reload immediately.
Heh, I do that too, but I reset when any of my party members fall in battle. And I have a penchant for bringing dual daggers Cole with me, so you can imagine what that was like. My exact rule was "If I see the revive tutorial, it's a game over" (mostly because I wanted Dorian's Simulacrum ability to be fair game.)
I was able to go through the critical path of the main game like this on Nightmare with Even Ground, Walk Softly, and Grizzly End. Couldn't keep it going for Trespasser, though.

Even Ground
Rest Easy
Travel Light
and I never train any elixir or potion with the final (extra effect) upgrade.

For my last playthrough, I did:
Grizzly end (though it doesn't really make bears harder to beat, it just means they take longer), and
Even Ground (When discovering the world in my earlier playthroughs, I'm glad it didn't have level scaling, but now I'm playing for more of a challenge, it's good)
I'll probably put a couple more on for my next one. Haven't decided yet. I also give myself the imposed challenge of not abusing the hell out of the Nug - I'll only upgrade schematic and material teirs every 8 levels (so lvl 2 at 8, lvl 3 at 16, lvl 4 at 24).

Hehe nicely done, that must have been brutal
It was rub some dirt on it that made me abandon my idiot companions, I just couldn't hack it. There was no way they wouldn't go down without constant micromanagement (which I can't stand in this game) or crafting them OP gear (but if their AI can't be relied on to act sensibly, and there are no tactics options to prevent Solas from running into a crowd of melee enemies and just standing there, then they don't deserve shiny uber gear).

Most of the game wasn't too bad, but a handful of sections took quite a few attempts to clear. In particular, I recall stumbling upon a Promoted Pride Demon accompanied by a couple Elite Despair Demons and Warden Spellbinder in Adamant. ![]()
I found that the alternate upgrade for Ice Mine coupled with Ice Armor helped Solas's survivability immensely. But, yeah, I don't think I could have added Rub Some Dirt On It to my run. ![]()

My favorites are:
Walk softly - I pretty much has this always on. Well, except in my Nightmare run (lvl 4) when I was like "O hey, let's try this out!"... and then our group promptly got gang-banged by 4 Templar defenders sporting full guards.
Even ground - While I'm usually not a fan of level scaling, it's way too easy to over-level in this game. This eliminates the problem and allows me to always find some challenge (especially when used with Walk softly).
I also occasionally use Take it slow. Leveling up is fun but I don't want to max out too quickly since character progression is one of the major attractions for me.
