Ferelden Names and Titles

I noticed that there's an inconsistency in how Ferelden nobles are addressed when their titles are used, and I was wondering if anyone had a guess as to why.

For example, Eamon Guerrin is always referred to as "Arl Eamon" and Loghain Mac Tir is always "Teyrn Loghain".

But Rendon Howe is always "Arl Howe" and never "Arl Rendon".

How come some nobles are addressed as title + first name and others as title + last name?

My best guess would have to do with the significance of the family name and whether it has garnered enough historical and cultural notoriety. I think this works if you assume Bryce Cousland is addressed as "Teyrn Cousland" given the weight of the Cousland name, as opposed to the Mac Tir name, which is new to Ferelden nobility. But I'm not sure that this works in all cases...

Ferelden titles are strange anyway, you have Ban which was first recorded as being used in the Duchy of Croatia in the 8th century who were the chief royal officers, Teyrn a welsh title for sovereign and Arl which is a clear take on the Anglo-Saxon, north Germanic title Earl.

Maybe either is accepible. Teyrn Logain might be easier on the va's then Teyrn Mac Tir. Also some nobles use both their title and full name. And I think the Guerrin family is as old and/or respected as the Howe's.

Most probably there is no absolute convention, leading to more than one technically correct form - but the usage would likely verify (in time) one of the forms as "more correct" just by virtue of being used more, either thanks to sounding "better" or for any number of other reasons - in case of Loghain it would be probably both "Mac Tir" being unwieldy as well as the fact that common people aren't usually referred by last name - if only because they usually don't even have one. Loghain would've gained his fame as a warrior, strategist and general - and only then would he receive the title. I don't know whether he had a surname before but even if he did, it was much less known than his first name - so in his case "Teyrn Loghain" would be much more obvious.

Someone's speculated before that it's a north/south split. North: Teyrn Cousland, Arl Howe. South: Teyrn Loghain, Arl Eamon, Bann Teagan.

It's never been verified (to the best of my knowledge), but it's definitely a pattern you can find.

Oh, what a neat idea! Headcanon accepted.

At least it's not as confusing as dwarven naming convention. If you found your own house, everybody takes your first name as their surname. So Oghren Kondrat married Branka and became... Oghren Branka. Does that mean Branka is Branka Branka?

I don't think Paragons have last names, unless you consider "Paragon" to be their first name. And I don't know if Oghren actually got the last name Branka, since he was still Warrior Caste and any of his son would be as well so it would be pretty confusing if you had a warrior with a noble's last name.

I think a Paragon would be Paragon "name" and the members of said house would be of house whatever the name is. That useally how clan based systems work.
