Origins, aside from the lore, had to work with a lot of setbacks with the engine, which they had to switch after they hit a wall. Still, I think that doesn't count, because we really didn't wait 6 years. Even after it was announced, it was an unknown. There's a big difference, in my opinion, between waiting for a new game and waiting for a franchise continuation. DA4 should take less time than DAI, since all of their tools and systems are implemented in Frostbite, so the dev process should be shorter.
I think the last time I didn't read about the romances before playing was Jade Empire. And because of that I missed Sky. I don't get much options, so I guess I prefer knowing. For me story spoilers are far worse. I got spoiled about Solas leaving (but thankfully not why) and about Blackwall not being Blackwall. That does take those moments away from me.
I'm really looking forward to see what they do with Frostbite in the next game since they won't have to build things from scratch. And also with not being restricted by the older console gen (though I do feel for those folks).
I do totally get wanting to know the romance options though. I'd imagine it would be quite a bummer to see a particular LI, especially if flirt options are available for both genders, and be disappointed yet again.
Ooh vbibbi made a really interesting point in the gaylien thread which I'll admit I hadn't considered before, and it is interesting to compare ME to DA in this case.
And even now when we have games with multiple same sex romances, almost all LGBT content is confined to those romances and not actually visible in the rest of the game setting.
In DAO, there was Wade and Herren, but that was not officially confirmed until a bit after the game was released; I honestly don't remember how overt the Leliana/Marjorlaine implication was because it's been so long. In DA2, I don't recall that there was anything other than suggestions in the Blooming Rose; people have said Seamus (the Viscount's son) was gay or bi (and supposedly had a thing with his Qunari pal), but I've never seen it. Other than these examples, I can't recall any other suggestions of same-sex pairings among NPCs.
I'd say that DAI was a departure in that regard, particularly since we had a lot of exposure to Orlesians. There are numerous examples, including a tragic one in the civil war, of same-sex pairings and it's all presented as perfectly normal. It was nice to see, but unfortunately, it also carries with it the implication that Orlais is the exception, rather than the rule.
Hm... a cute non-Orlesian example would have been the young couple in the tavern on the dam in Crestwood, if they had been a same-sex pairing. Then again, the secretive vibe might have further (unintended by the devs) implications in that case, so maybe not.
The only non-Orlesian pairing I can think of was during the Hinterlands quest wherein you recruit the agent.
