Send the raccoon down the sinkhole with a rope tied around its waist, or whatever passes for a raccoon's waist. If the rope goes taut for a moment and then suddenly eases up, we'll know we have to rethink the expedition to include safety gear.

I wish I'd seen that. Was he trying to take the lecture everyone in the thread for liking the character? I've seen him try to do that with the Vivienne thread as well.

It wasn't even Solas related. Someone made a comment about paying for a happy ending to the romance to which he said that if people only want happy, cuddly endings then that's how BioWare will write it and it will be terrible. Then later tried to give a lecture on why romance options were alluring, or why you choose one option over another. I remember him posting the question and others responding with their own opinions. I definitely remember him responding with, "The answer is...."

Not really a vent but more of an update on the raccoon thing I've still yet to see it again but we have a trap on the front porch with cat food in it, not sure if it'll fit the raccoon though given how narrow the trap is. Oh there is a slight vent in here I'm suppose to call someone in their 60-70s to take care of it since gran sees me as 7 not sure if I should be grateful or annoyed that I don't have to deal with the thing but leaning towards a bit annoyed.

Oh and yeah gran is or was kind of a badass but dangerously stubborn too with doing a list of things from, being able to arrest and bring in three guys that towered over her when she was a cop to staying out in the fields working until and after her body stopped producing sweat.

sorry about the posting right after my own post^^;

After going through one of the threads in the Inquisition section I'm finding myself worrying about silly things that I should have no reason to fret over but do because my brain works like that. A game I have recently been playing there is a character that I adore to pieces and was going to make him my first romance of that game though after a while of not getting prompts I looked it up online and found out he was available for m/m romances only so I re-rolled a male character because I like his character so much and weirdly feel bad for enjoying the character how much I am, and wondering if I'm being creepy about it and then feel bad for wondering if I should feel bad since I liked the character like that at pretty much first interaction with him as well.

I apologize for the incoherent babbling.

Out of curiosity, what's the game?

And, no, you shouldn't feel bad or creepy for enjoying an entertainment medium meant to be enjoyed.  Ain't nobody's business.  Do you, boo.

'Loren The Amazon Princess' it was brought up in the thread you started in this group I believe. With the DLC there are 3 s/s romances and 3 o/s romance without it there are only two for each.

The character I absolutely fell in love with is named Draco he falls right into that perfect mix of adorkable for me that I utterly love.

I know it's silly and I shouldn't feel bad for it but after certain discussion it had me worrying that my like of the character was falling into 'obsessive fangirl' type of like (though when I sit down and think about it I know that's not the case)

Oh, yeah, I remember that one coming up in the other thread.  I've also heard about it in the past.  It's been one that's been on my 'list' for a while but I've never gotten around to it.

And, yeah, don't let that 'fangirl' conversation get to you.  There are definitely some gals (mostly straight) out there who objectify gay guys by either keeping them as their 'pet gay' (This is "my gay") or by squeeing over all things m/m.  But simply enjoying a gay themed romance arc?  Not fangirling.  Just doing exactly what you are supposed to do:  enjoy the entertainment!

I hear a lot of wait till its on sale which even though I don't regret buying it I would say to wait for it to go down a little at current price with DLC (If you buy it bundled) it's 25$ and if you sit through it (especially on lower difficulty) You could probably breeze through it in a day or two.

I've only finished one romance arc so far since I take long pauses with it cause I don't like making choices but imo it is worth looking at and has pretty interesting characters and a few different ways to set your character's background or some of it anyway.

Also imo I think the s/s options for men are pretty dang good with a nice variation between the choices for m/m romances (though that's my opinion with pretty much all the romances so far) Though I say that as a bi woman but the options are different enough they should suit different tastes.

I looked at the romance chart.  Based solely on looks, I would probably go for Amukiki since all of the m/m options have long hair!?!?!?  But his is the least long and he seems like a muscley warrior type.

To be fair all the guys in your group aside from the male character have long hair oh and a DLC character but everyone else long hair. Game is against short hair companions it's a conspiracy. If it helps any Draco does have a kind of reason to have long hair to hide his elfy like ears.

Amukiki has got that stoic warrior angel down pretty well go the human route if you want him sooner. He's a very honor driven kind of guy.

Earlier in this thread some were talking about how they often write out posts in response to something they've read here that irritates or annoys or otherwise bothers them, and then deleted what they had written before posting it. I've done that a few times today, mostly after realizing that my response would just continue things. Bleh, sure hope we get some concrete Andromeda news soon.

There are definitely some gals (mostly straight) out there who objectify gay guys by either keeping them as their 'pet gay' (This is "my gay") or by squeeing over all things m/m.

As a straight woman, I find that genre just as creepy as the straight male g/g pron. I admit that I downloaded a bunch of male vampire sims that a woman had made as part of a whole story set in a gay male vampire world. What disturbs me about that is that sometimes the female creators display hatred or revulsion for themselves and other women.

Years and years ago, when I first had an online social life, I found the controversy around genderbending in Second Life completely fascinating. I was especially curious about why it bothered some people so very much. There's a kind of person who insists on "reality" and "truth" in everything, even made-up pixelated avatars. It makes me wonder how they deal with ambiguity - not well, I assume.

After I made a male avatar for myself, I was surprised that I found his sexuality confusing: I'd expected him to be gay, but I think my straightness carried over to my male self. I was much too shy to take him out for more than a test drive. Besides, he was kind of a jerk  I gave him permission to do and say all the things forbidden to nice ladies.

Just doing exactly what you are supposed to do:  enjoy the entertainment!

I was thinking about this regarding the boob armor and naked mods that dominate Nexus whenever a new RPG comes along. They bug the heck out of me, but I try to dissociate myself and remember that what people enjoy in their own games doesn't affect me. I have been guilty of ogling male game characters in their undies, after all.  :P

If you're talking about the thread I'm thinking about then don't worry. He's prone to sweeping generalizations and making accusations. I didn't want to engage in that conversation, but at one point I had to, he was making such nonsense arguments.

Enjoy what you enjoy.

^ If it's the thread I'm thinking about... yeah. I avoided it for a long while, popped in for a bit a few days ago because I was bored, and regretted it shortly thereafter. It's also why I faded away from the KISA thread, to be honest. But I've come to see that thread as a safe space for certain folks, so I don't care as much in that case.

At any rate, the "sweeping generalizations" is the bad part. Yes, there are bad elements on every side, but not every straight female player fetishizes the m/m relationships, or has the "pet gay," or objectifies whomever, and some of us are also quite annoyed by all of those things and dislike being lumped in with those people.

As SporkFu mentions above, I've written out a long rant in response to all of that on more that one occasion, realized that it would fall on deaf ears for those inclined to think that way, and deleted it. What's the point, really?

I don't actually read fanfic, mostly because I'm not interested in other people's Inquisitors**, or how they view the LI (with one particular exception). But it does seem to me, and has always seemed, that there is a huge disparity between male and female producers of fan content. Are the women just more vocal? Are they simply more willing to put their stuff out there and advertise? -- "NEW chapter of my fic is up on AO3!!" -- I really have no idea, but I've wondered about this for years.

Several months ago there was a discussion in the Dorian thread about fic writing as well. The gay male posters in the thread were quite annoyed with a wide swath of content, including Dorian's treatment in Adoribull pairing fics, and in Trevelyan fics where he basically amounts to a damsel being rescued by his own KISA Inquisitor; they also disliked the way sex was portrayed, particularly in the Adoribull fics.

When I see people ranting about female fic writers and this or that trope with relation to m/m relationships, I think, There have to be some guys (and gay or bi guys) out there writing stuff, too. Where are they? And let's be honest, there is sh*t writing, no matter the format, author, orientation, and so on. The gems will always be harder to find amidst the large pile of rocks.

My previous fandom involved the manga pairing Seishirou x Subaru from the CLAMP manga Tokyo Babylon and X. This was an actual canon pairing in the manga (I don't indulge in "ships"). Aside from one never completed fic that I knew was written by a guy, most have been written by women. My tastes have changed a great deal from those days, as I no longer like the seme x uke types of pairings, but at that time I would have been quite eager to read Sei x Su fic written by men, especially gay men, for the perspective.

** This sounds mean, but I don't mean it that way. I just have no interest.

My mom was a cop for 25 years, so much respect for your gran. It was a man's world when my mother joined the department; I can't imagine what it was like in your grandmother's time.

The gender disparity is caused by a few factors. Since men are encouraged to go into STEM and women into humanities, it's only natural more people knowing how to write stories would come from one group. Also, this is concerning smut, according to some studies men prefer visual stimuli, women can enjoy it in more forms. I've also heard that male writers tend to prefer other websites than AO3. There are probably more reasons, but that's all I could think of.

In what way did they dislike the portrayal of sex? I'm guessing the technical details? (Honestly, no, you cannot use candle wax as lube)

So true about the visual vs. written, and I had forgotten about that.

I only used AO3 as the example because that is the thing these days. When I used to read fanfic (10+ years ago) it was on a variety of sites. Most of the authors I was a fan of had their own site where I would read their fics. CLAMP fanfic was pretty community oriented and link based. Authors would link to other authors and recommend other fics, so rather than have a huge site to browse through, it was very possible to be insular with a single author and others who wrote similar content.

As for the sex, more of the "bend over, I'm going to destroy your ass" type of thing. I can't recall beyond that. I can try to find the discussion for you, if you want, since I can look through my own post history. The two guys involved in it don't appear to post regularly on the forums anymore.

And omfg at the candle wax. Honestly, I think that some (many?) female writers of m/m content don't "get" anal sex -- silly, since it's not a "gay" thing -- and when you have things like Brokeback Mountain (I'm not a fan) suggesting that spitting in your hand will be just dandy, or other media (not porn) showing guys just getting it on anywhere, it's easy to see why that is. There is also too heavy an emphasis on penetrative sex, like that's all there is. In all of the smutty Sei x Su fics I read, I can only recall a small number of times where the sexual activity was non-penetrative. Sometimes it seems like the thought process is, "These guys are gay. That's how they have sex, right? I'll write that," completely ignoring all the other fun things.

However, I think a good deal of that can be mitigated by putting out a bit of effort, using a bit of common sense, and doing some research. That research does not have to involve porn either.

Somewhat related, my sample size is very small, but I've observed that some female players of Inquisitors in m/m relationships have them as bisexual, rather than homosexual, and I wonder how common that is, and whether that is something they gravitated toward because they are women, or straight, or are themselves bi.

Nothing wrong with being bi, of course, and I am aware of "bi erasure." It doesn't necessarily have to mean anything, but is only an observation.

My canon Inquisitor is gay and has always been so. If I had been able to make a girlfriend for Cassandra, she would have been a lesbian. Such is my mentality. I suppose I can be accused of binary thinking, or of limiting my role-play to the parameters of my own sexuality, but that is just how I think of it for my own characters.

Sorry I get carried away on these tangents. I do find these issues interesting and it's nice to discuss them with reasonable people.

snip

For some reason I've seen candle wax multiple times. I don't understand whyyyyy.

"bend over, I'm going to destroy your ass"

oh god, it's always so cringeworthy when that happens. Nah, don't search, I just wanted the general gist of it.

The only place they talked about prep I remember was "Looking," otherwise guys apparently are lubed and prepped 24/7. Guess part of the blame is on the media.

I think too that some reading and common sense would be nice in writing those scenes.

The bisexual protagonist preference is curious. Maybe there's more familiarity ("the character is also attracted to the opposite sex, like me"). I have no idea. I always play my protagonists as gay, when I get the option. But I guess that's because I almost never get to do that, so I instinctively grasp for it. Earlier I did play as female protagonists as default, like in BG2, NWN, and Icewind Dale, and that sometimes meant I could romance male characters and I did just that, but I don't think I had enjoyed the romances that much. And I totally missed the m/m romance in Jade Empire, I had no idea during the first run that you could unlock Sky, because it required you to be a complete douche to the female companions.

I already get to role play as all those straight male characters in video games, so when it comes to it, I'm not that creative with my BW protagonists. Although I do tend to make my characters either black or latino.  Aside from default Hawke, whom I loved too much to change, and Shep, because they messed up the lighting, and with my custom one I ended up with floating eyes most of the time...

Also, no problem. That's what the group is for - to have a normal, non-explosive conversation ;)

My god... there is another Hero of Ferelden thread! Will they never stop?!

Hype backlash. I try not to, but I'm starting to get that way The Witcher. I actually like the Witcher 3, but when these hordes of people start acting like it should be canonized as something miraculous and beyond reproach, it makes me slightly more likely to focus in on the flaws.
