How has the Golden Nug changed your game?

Partly inspired by the Trials thread (http://forum.bioware...als-do-you-use/), I was wondering how the Golden Nug has changed your experience of the game and the decisions you make? What has not changed?

-------------

What changed for me:

1) I used to spend hours farming Tier 3 schematics in Valeska's Watch and Cradle of Sulevin. No more of that!

2) Ditto farming the Canyon Market "The Short List" schematics by zone in/out. The Golden Nug lets me flip the finger at the RNG.

3) Seeds. This was an unexpected time saver for me. I now do the Skyhold Garden customization ASAP and plant the seeds needed to upgrade potions, tonics and grenades. Now I don't have to go hunting for Prophet's Laurel and Felandaris. It was a drag getting 4 of the 5 required PL from one zone and having to open another just to get the last one!

4) Recipes. No more chasing the Rebel Mage all over The Storm Coast for the Mighty Offense tonic.

5) Thrones. For lulz, I had my dwarf IQ sitting for first judgment in the most ginormous throne available. Usually, I just use the default Inquisition throne, until the one that matches my IQ's background is available.

--------------

What did not change for me:

1) I only use Tier 1 schematics before Skyhold, as a personal choice to keep things challenging. I tell a lie, I did use a Tier 2 schematic for my IQ's armor, because all the Tier 1's were hideously ugly. I only used Tier 1 mats, though.

2) Even after Skyhold, I'm not going straight to Tier 4 schems. While it might be interesting running around the Western Approach with Encore, Hakkon's Wrath, The Clasping Maw and The Skin That Strikes, I think I'd get bored pretty quickly. So I'm sticking to leveled schematics, nothing before its time.

I used to rush Emprise du Lion for the weapon schematics and T3 mats. Which was kinda fun, being underleveled and all (this was as close as Inquisition got to DA:O for me), but the farming of mats was just painful.

The main difference tbh though is having to exercise self control, and not crafting too much. I... tend to fail. :D

Other than the fact I don't spend quiet as much time farming as I did prior to having it not a great deal to be honest.

As for my way of playing I tend to do go up a equipment tier every 5 levels or so. So my first half of my time in Haven I spend on tier 1 then around the time when I start recruiting people onto my team I start using the Tier 2 stuff. I stay on Tier 2 until I complete Wicked Eyeds Wicked Hearts and Here Lies the Abyss becaus by the time I get through those I'm about level 14/15 by then I then switch to Tier 3 and then move to Tier 4 (top tier ) around the time I begin working through the DLC's

I couldn't agree more with all of your points. I don't sync the GN pre Sky Hold for the challenge and don't go overboard with all the OP stuff right away when I do.

The seeds, banners, potions are great bonuses too.

I always thought having to farm Short List items was lame. If I invest in the perk, don't punish me by making me farm for the stuff.

I've only done one playthough on PS4 so far, but the amount of time I saved because I don't have to farm for the best tier 3 schematics is incredible.

I'll also extend that to seed harvesting and getting potion recipes. Being able to get a maxed out jar of bees asap is great. Though I also don't have every Tier 2 or 3 schematic yet.

Now the only thing I use the Black Emporium for is buying Tier 3 crafting mats as soon as I get to level 16.

For Haven, I use Tier 3 equips with Tier 1 mats.

Finally, I like having all the thrones and their upgrades as well.

I enjoy being able to just craft any high leveled armor/weapons early on and basically just run over any low level enemy i run into.

Not having to farm crafting schematics is nice, but something that surprised me, and that I absolutely love, was how much it improved my role playing ability. Example: If I want to create a character that I imagine would be very skilled in combat and/or would have access to pretty strong gear before they even joined the Inquisition, I can use higher tiered schematics early in the game to simulate that. Like I imagine that my Qunari/Tal Vashoth mage mercenary is an experienced badass who's seen her share of action, and anything short of dragons, pride demons, or extremely mutated red templars isn't really going to phase her. SO her having decent gear, and being able to crush everything in her path in the early game thanks to the nug makes me happy. Granted I could also just lower the difficulty to accomplish this, but as I'm sure some of you can understand, I'd prefer not to have to do that, because playing on anything lower than nightmare just isn't any fun.

I also really really like that I can use dwarven armour for dwarves, or elven armour for elves, etc etc, when I'm still pre-Haven and my character hasn't really committed themselves to the idea of staying with the Inquisition yet. :P

Is there any reason to get The Short List perk with a fully loaded Golden Nug? I can't think of one.

Biggest change for me is not choosing which area to go to next for materials to upgrade potions et al.

I like the idea of waiting to use schematics and materials. That's level 8 for T2 and level 16 for T3?

Trying a play through (Harold the Herald) with no Golden Nug and Trials. It is more difficult than I thought it was going to be.

BW should've included those darn shards into the nug, as well. I really don't like collecting them but can't help myself. Otherwise, the nug is a huge game improvement. No more tiresome farming.

Buying "Way of the X Specialization" materials without having to farm enemies. I did it on my Artificer (sparring me the need to hunt down Quilbacks) and I'll do so on my Rift Mage soon.

I never used the nug. I craft whatever schematic I find with whatever resources I find and wear whatever armor I find. Part of the game imo.

Yeah I tend to limit my use of the nug Every 3 playthroughs or so I wipe it clean so if Iwant to use that kind of stuff again in my 4th one then I have to find it again. In fact after my current run I'l be wiping it again so if I want some good mage stuff for my Qunari when I play him I'm going to have to find or buy it from a merchant because it won't be there in the nug. Makes it moer of a challenge that way especially as loot is generally quite randomized in this game.

Why wipe it at all? The Golden Nug doesn't give you anything until you touch it on a fresh character. It's only there for New Game Plus simulation.

It's only there for New Game Plus benefits.

Because I still like to use it sometimes for those benefits  but I like to leave myself some work to do in terms of getting new stuff as well. So whilst my Qunari won't get the benefit of the nugin my next playthrough my second and third Characters will benefit from what my Qunari finds assuming he finds something that is useful to them. Which he may or he may not and in the case he dosen't then it'll be up to them to find what they need. Just makes the game a little bit moer challenging

Jar of Bees without having to recruit Sera! :D

Just kidding, I recruited Sera.

Anyway, it made me believe I could complete the game on nightmare and get a platinum trophy. And I did it! Thank you, Golden nug. The best armors of the game were available to me very early on as long as I could find kickass materials for them! (Thanks to the black market, it wasn't so bad.)

And I was able to upgrade potions very easy thanks to the garden in skyhold, and the fact I had all the seeds from my previous playthroughs! (Jar of Bees is love, Jar of Bees is life!)

Something like that, yeah.

Due to some up-tier loot opportunities in down-tier areas, like the Tier 2 chest in Haven, you could technically get T2 and T3 earlier, but for the most part, it maps to the zones. If you are leveled high enough to open the corresponding zone, you are leveled high enough for that tier of schematic. Mats of the same tier are available in the corresponding zones, so it kind of makes sense to base it on opening zones.

Tier 1: Hinterlands, Forbidden Oasis, The Storm Coast, Val Royeaux

Tier 2: Fallow Mire, Western Approach, Crestwood, Exalted Plains

Tier 3: Emerald Graves, Emprise du Lion, Hissing Waste
