Hey guys, I'm really struggling with bigger groups of Hakkonites right now. Playing on Hard with some trials as a KE with Varric, Blackwall, and Solus as my main companions. It seems like these guys are ripping through guard and barriers in a matter of seconds. If I run into a group that is big enough to be hard to really lockdown with Solus it hurts.....bad.
Any advice for dealing with these guys?
You have Solas? Most people don't, since they do JoH after the main quest, but if you have Solas, you have everything you need to beat JoH.
What is your XP level? If you are at least level 17, you should be able to combat groups like this:
1) I looks like you already know to lead with Veilstrike/Punching Down. Make sure you target archers and assassins if you can. It doesn't matter if the others aren't locked down, its the archers and assassins that can one-shot you. Solas should also Dispel barrier on any enemies.
2) Your KE should cast Barrier and then cast a Fire Mine/Searing Glyph right on top of the group that was flattened by Veilstrike. Barrier should fuel Chaotic Focus for bonus damage. Then Fade Step into the fray and whack away. Also, dispel Barrier on any enemies. Also, cast Aegis to protect yourself and Blackwall from any archers or spell caster that were not flattened. if anyone survived the first Fire Mine, cast a second, coordinated with Solas casting Pull of the Abyss on the same spot.
3) Varric should Hook and Tackle/Beats Walking into the middle of the group that is down and drop Elmental Mines or Traps or Caltrops/Tread Lightly, then do Leaping Shop/Shot from the Shadows to escape. His next attack should be his highest damage Archery attack or Throwing Blades/Precision Targeting, because it will 100% crit from Stealth (if you built him right). Then repeat. Use Varric to pick off any archers or assassins that are not crowd controlled in the first volley.
4) Blackwall should Charging Bull in and War Cry, to generate Guard. Or, he can spam Horn of Valor/Fortifying Blast to give everyone Guard. If he is 2H, Whirlwind. Use Champion abilities as needed, like Walking Fortress. Blackwall can survive both assassins and archers with Walking Fortress, so keep it up. Or use him to aggro stragglers and keep the heat off Solas and Varric.
For me, those tactics would pretty much kill every Hakkonite mob in the first 10 seconds, except for Bruisers. Those took a bit more whacking to put down.
Granted, I did not have Trials on and I was a level capped Rift Mage, but anywhere from level 17 on with Tier 3 gear should be able to do the above, though it might take a bit longer.
+1 Antivan Fire grenades. Those work great on Hakkonites and most of the fire vulnerable beasties in JoH. I'm looking at you, Ice Troll!
If all else fails, turn the Trials off.
