Hi guys and girls,

I am new to Dragon Age (never even played through the first game) but now i have some time and want to play the trilogy :) I want to play as a Mage  (Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage) or a Templar.

I have a few questions regarding Mages vs. Templar:

1) How do Mages fight templar? Aren't the Templar "immune" to Magic? So how is it even possible to fight as a Mage when facing a Templar?

2) RPG-Stuff: Do the decisions of my character in Origins have a big impact on DAII? And do my decisions have in DAII have a big impact on DAIII? Because i would like to create a RPG Friendly Adventure when i play the three games.

I know you play different characters in every game but would it be wise to play on the side of the mages or templars throughout the entire trilogy if you look at it from a RPG Perspective or doesn't it really matter if you play one Game as a Templar and one game as a Mage?

That sounds weird, i know. But i really can not decide playing as Templar or Mage. So i would like to play as both when playing the 3 games and still have a somewhat RPG/Lore Friendly experience for myself. Do you get my point :D ?

3) Gameplay: Is it easier as a templar or a Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage to play the game? I like a challenge so i will play on a high difficulty :)

Thanks!

EDIT: Sorry, i posted this in the wrong section i think.

Mages tends to fight templars with blood magic , mages channel magic through the Fade ( a dream world) , templars have abilities making this difficult or impossible. That's where blood magic comes in , mage can also channel magic through blood , templars have less tools against that.Blood magic is forbidden and kinda hard to learn.

Decisions have no "big" impact , it's always self contained stuff , you'll hear references here and there , see npcs in different roles , some choices in DAO can have an effect on DAI for example , you'll get  different scenes but the story won't change much overall.

Doesn't really matter if you play pro templars/pro mages , just do whatever you feel like in each game .

I don't want to ruin all your dreams , but when it comes to roleplay a mage or a warrior with a templar spe , you're the special snowflake...you're never going to be part of the templar order or suffer what other mages go through , like you can play a blood mage , it should get you killed on sight but nope!

On the bright side you can have an opinion about the whole conflict and express it .

I can't really remember the spe in DAO/DA2 (and I rarely play warrior so ...) but you can play Knight Enchanter in DAi (more or less the same as Arcane Warrior) and it's quite brutal. You never die.

Honestly while Templars do have anti-magic powers they aren't that good. Their most dangerous power is Smite but it's not like they're immune to magical attack.

1) Templars can prevent a mage from casting spells and can cancel or diminish active spells. They are able to do this by using their antimagic abilities to cut the mage off from the Fade which is the source of magic power. However, a Templar is powerless against blood magic because it uses life force as fuel and has no Fade connection to disrupt. Any mage that wants to stand a chance against Templars should be adept at blood magic.

2) Your decisions do have impact but nothing drastic. It gets pretty interesting though. Just play the game and see for yourself.

3) Mages are superior to mundanes and this is reflected somewhat in game. A mage play through is easier and more fun than a Warrior/Templar one imo. A mage has battlefield control. A Warrior just hacks away at one enemy at a time and has no out of combat utility. No contest.

1. Templars are not really immune to magic. Through lyrium they resist it and its affects. They can also remove its affects through their own abilities.

However, one of the greatest tools mages have access to that make it so Templars have a considerably harder time resisting is blood magic. Blood magic in lore draws on power from the physical, blood and life, and not the metaphysical, the Fade, thus the templars have a harder time resisting it.

But even without blood magic not all templars can resist magic effectively.

2. There are a few choices that carry over to DA2. For example, the Dalish vs the Werewolves, depending on how that is resolved creates a different side-quest in DA2.

3. Depends. Arcane Warriors/Blood Mages can be ridiculously overpowered and can almost solo the game, but you have to know what you are doing from the very beginning of the game in how you set up your skills and stats. Every single step, every skill, every spell has to contribute to making the Arcane Warrior. Done right the Arcane Warrior is a beast. Templars are essentially regular soldiers who are simply more effective against mages. Unless your opponents are mages the templar talents are quite useless. Against a mage, however, being a templar can be a huge advantage.

Gameplay wise, however, being a mage specializing in the school of spirit is more effective than being a templar. The ability Mana Clash is bugged and way overpowered. It is essentially one spell-cast, kill any mage caught in the blast.
