Has anyone out there been able to play this on PC without a controller? Because I don't have one and I find it basically... impossible. As more of a casual gamer, it's very tough to navigate, IMO. Thinking I will just have to buy one. :(

It's a console port. You can get a wired controller pretty cheap off Amazon or Ebay.

I play without a controller, but I have never finished the game.. LOL!

So my Opinion on that may be squat...

But I have no problems with keyboard & Mouse, I do miss not having more than 8 spells or skills in combat, but that has nothing to do with you problem.

I've gotten through 5 whole playthroughs using only mouse and keyboard and found it quite easy. Did try a little with a controller and it was okay (pretty good for multiplayer), but I like to multitask when playing so it's a hassle to switch between controller for the game and mouse and keyboard for browsing.

Owning a controller is nice tough, especially if you decide to branch out in your gaming.

It would be better to know what exactly is troubling you. Is it the movements, camera or skillset? And maybe knowing whether you want to control the party as a group or just focus on one character and let the others do their thing?

Rebinding keys really helps, as does having a mouse with extra buttons. It really depends on what is comfortable for your hands though. Controller might be a better option for ya.  :)

Well, I appreciate that no one's made fun of me yet. I'm not much of a computer gamer. :)

I had no problem with DA1 and 2. It's the type of view. I find myself having difficulty re-angling the camera view when moving. So I'm basically walking/running in these weird zig-zags. I suppose it will just take a lot of practice, but I do wish they had stuck to the kind of controls the previous games had.

I don't see how DA:I is any different from Skyrim control-wise, although obviously you're not looking at things from a FP camera. So no, no particular problems.... at least, none I didn't have with Skyrim too.

Thought the DAO/DA2 interface was excellent, but for DAI...

Use a standard 3-button mouse (hate the very idea of using a "controller" for a PC game)

Enabled "mouse look" option (possible since Patch 10)

Learned to use the "Interact" key (currently mapped to "R")

No problems.  ;)

Absolutely.  I understand the game plays quite a bit differently with a controller as compared to a keyboard, but I personally really like the keyboard controls.

I use the Tactical Camera for everything.  Unlike with a controller, the camera mode and pausing are activated independently.  You can pause and unpause freely in either camera mode.

I doubt the action controls would work well with a keyboard, but I never use those.

No problem at all. I toggled mouse look on and remapped interact to thumb mouse button.

No problem i think. I have a controller, but never used for it. I prefer mouse+keyboard. Maybe not the best port, but playable.

I always have and always will use PC+mouse+keyboard. I had zero problems playing DAI - or any other game - with them. I hate console and especially controllers of anykind. The mouse controls were a bit different from ME trilogy - which I was playing before DAI - but it only took a little playing to get used to them.

Yeah the only games I use a controller for on my PC are mostly sports games like Fifa generally on PC I prefer the mouse/keyboard way of playing.

For example I used controller for the Devil May Cry-series.

I had to use a controller for Dark souls, and Dark souls 2.  But I don't think there is another game i have played that I just had to use a controller for other than some of my Emulation software.

I know what you are going through OP, i was unable to enjoy this game at all until i changed the keybinds (with the new options added in patches), so now it is ok for me, nothing like DAO but it is at least bearable.

The essential keybindings you need are:

- Autoattack (SP): bind this on a mouse button, like the wheel or other if you have a gaming mouse.

- Mouse look toggle: puts this on alt or similar, put mouse cursor on your character head, then hit the button

- Interact: put this on a very easy access key, you will use this for looting and many more things

- Target Switch: Change this from TAB to somewhere closer to you

- Attack my target: Put this next to target switch, this tells your party to focus attack your target

Nices to have are disengage, hold position and other commands shown on the down-right corner.

Also, FORGET about Tactical Camera, unbind it and never look back, it sucks. Just play in action mode with these keybinds.

Tac-cam works fine. It is a little different and takes some minor adjustments but that is all.

I suppose it will just take a lot of practice, but I do wish they had stuck to the kind of controls the previous games had.

As others have suggested, be sure to rebind your keys to whatever is most comfortable for you.

For most games, WSAD are usually bound as forward (W), back (S), strafe left (A), strafe right (D). For some reason, DAI has left/right mapped to Q/E by default, so I usually change them to A/D, and map the camera left/right turn to Q/E instead.

For running and maneuverability, to get the smoothest movement you will want to move forward with W and use the right mouse button to turn the camera slightly as you run forward. This results in the most natural movement. You can use the strafe keys while running, but as you say, this can result in an awkward zig-zag movement. You can also turn the camera with the keys rather than the mouse, but since that is a button push rather than a hold-move with the mouse, the movement can be jerky.

To combat...

This really depends on what you're used to from other games with the keyboard/mouse setup, and what you are able to get used to. Players may offer suggestions, but what works for one may not necessarily work for another.

Generally speaking, combat can be more frustrating as melee than as ranged. For DAI, if you are in the middle of an attack swing or ability, the game waits for that to finish before allowing you to move. So you could very well find yourself in the unfortunate position of swinging wildly at some enemy, holding the attack key; the enemy moves away and you press the movement key while still attacking, and you are standing there swinging at air. My first DAI play was as a mage, but the second was as a warrior. It took me nearly half the game to get use to this.

Also for melee, there are several abilities that both warrior and rogue have that allow movement across the battlefield to enemies, or control enemy position. It's very important to make use of these to control the fight.

Remap your keys so your hand placement is comfortable on the keyboard. Also, the later patches added new hotkeys for certain things, but they are unbound by default, so be sure to check those. If something isn't working out, then try something else.

It's really just a matter of trial and error and getting used to it, but it IS doable.

I have a laptop.

I use a combination of an external mouse and keyboard... I didn't even know I could have a controller (until now) but I am so used to playing my games this way that I really don't think I need to get one.

It does make for interesting play though as all three DA's take different methods to move and fight using the tools I have.  Why they made them that way is beyond me.

I never even have to touch my keyboard when gaming using these!

I played originally on Xbox One and have just brought the game on PC and after the intro I logged out of the game and added a controller.

Played through the game using only the mouse and keyboard multiple times with no issues.

I also played through with M&K. I admit, it's harder without a controller.

I use a mouse and keyboard exclusively and do not really have a problem.  If your field of vision is too small you can scroll back on your mouse to get a wider view.  I also maked my interact & auto attack to a 4th and 5th mouse button.  This makes looting & real time combat easier.

I do own a controller, but I think mouse+keyboard is better for this game. I haven't had any problems and its not like DA:I is Dark souls. That said, its a shame that a lot of the UI is designed simplified to accommodate the controller.
