I will admit it.  I am a casual player.  I just got ME Trilogy and am enjoying playing through it.  I am about half way through ME 1 and I am at level 36 or so.  I am trying to work my way through the Pinnacle Station mission and I will admit that I really don't like it.  I have read some of the guides and I have done 4 of the basic missions, however I am hung up on the hunt missions.  I just can't seem to track down the targets in time.  Killing them is no problem, but finding them in time is.

What is the best way to tackle Pinnacle Station?

Thanks in advance.

I would describe myself as a casual player too, sometimes I'm good at combat, sometimes I suck.  As long as I'm having fun I'm not that bothered.

For ME1 I had a lot of trouble with my first 2 playthroughs.  As an infiltrator I could snipe and use the pistol which suited me, that's the class I used for Pinnacle Station and cleared the whole thing on Normal mode.  Then I played as a vanguard and sheesh I sucked at it.  Running in with a shotgun - not my strong suit apparently, it was so hard I skipped P.S. and played on easy mode.

Just done my third run as a Sentinel and I'm loving it, I can snipe and use a pistol like an infiltrator but have more armour and survivability.  I still didn't re-do P.S. though as honestly it bores me.  The prizes aren't worth it and in ME3 you get a new arena mode that is infinitely better.

So honestly I'd say walk away, play the rest of the game and forget it exists.  The fact I haven't even missed it my last 2 runs goes to show how meh the whole DLC is.  It was only created to give ppl more ME while ME2 was being developed anyway, it has zero impact on the story going forward (unlike Bring Down the Sky which is referenced later.)

I am playing as an adept.  I might just skip this too, but I am not quite ready to give up.  This is my first play through.  I really only wanted the apartment.

I find that Pinnacle Station doesn't sync to your difficulty, especially the timed missions which sucks on Insanity but it was really easy as Casual. Just play it but it does get repetitive. Only play it once. I love the final mission where there's this new map and you're fighting a simulation based on First Contact War against the Turians. I use Kaidan and Ashley and boy it was fun.

I visited the apartment once then promptly forgot it even existed.

So are there any hints on the hunt missions?

tbh it's not the easiest of missions and I've never beaten it and seeing as it's not that crucial to the main story line I've never bother ed to really push myself too hard on it. It's one of the few missions I don't think I'm that fussed about though. I find it fun to play as a bit of practice but beyond that I don't bother al that much.

If you aren't feeling the station, it's missions, and story this playthrough. Then don't do it now. Save it for another playthrough for when you might hunger extra ME1 content.

And there's a very easy way to beat all missions. Freeze time, take all day to line up headshots if you must, and win, win, win.

Thanks for all your help and advice.  I went back and completed the scenario.  I even found that the Admiral's final scenario fun.  I discovered that if you ran to a door and went into the spawn point not only did enemies not spawn but enemies that got that far simply disappeared.  I hid in a corner behind Wrex and Ashley and had target practice.

I usually don't start Pinnacle Station until around level 50 or about when I get two Medical Exoskeleton mods (hopefully both at X) for maximum cooldown.

Hunt Missions are generally the hardest missions, especially Volcanic which I think is bugged in a bad way; I find it really tough to beat the high score. For the other hunt missions, sometimes you get lucky and enemies spawn at just the right locations so you can rack up the kills and increase the time.

Hunt missions seem to be more about getting lucky. The other missions are more about being quick (time trial, race) or survival. Sometimes on Hunt it is just about finding the right spot and hope the enemies come to you.

Having Master Marksman or Assault Rifles with a good pistol/assault rifle helps.

For the two basic survival missions, I came across a tip that all you needed to do was run around.  So I did that and it worked.  Shot anything that was in front and kept running.  It didn't work for third.  What I finally did was find a spot that seemed to be away from the spawn points and then shoot them at distance.  It may have been a bug, but once I found the spot I actually had to wait about 30 seconds before a target finally moved into range.  This was a case when doing nothing worked to my advantage.

I think the combat in the first game is the best of the series and I still find Pinnacle Station to be as dull as a bag of hammers. Unless you are desperate for the XP boost, I'd recommend just skipping it in the future.

I only play it for the best store in the game.

VoteDC, why do you like the combat in ME1 the best?  I am just starting the series and I don't know enough to compare.  I am just curious.

Not worth it for me since it is a still a random shot for stuff, even if the odds are higher. Plus I primarily play on the PC, so can just give myself whatever I need with the command console.

Because to me it provides more options. I'll try to be brief as I can go on for a while.

You can use cover by being pressed against it, which gives you an accuracy boost when shooting. You can also crouch, so can take advantage of low cover without the need to be pressed against it. Crouching also gives an accuracy bonus, so you can lure some enemies into chokepoints without cover and take them down more easily.

Powers and abilities have individual cool-downs, so you aren't stuck waiting to use another. Shields are actually effective, so you can take a good few hits if you choose to go charging in. Biotics affect people with protections, so biotic based classes can be as effective in combat as the gun based ones.

Special ammo isn't a power but a mod that can be equipped to any weapon on any character.

And those aren't available in ME 2 and 3?  If not, I see what you mean.

No they are not. Things became more third person shooter with 2 and 3.

You can now only use cover while being pressed against it, the instant you leave cover you stand up and expose yourself to enemy fire. This is a small problem as the enemies tend to have pin-point accuracy with everything bar heavy weapons. To be fair Mass Effect 3 remedies this a little with the ability to combat roll but enemies still tend to hit you with weapons fire while you are doing it.

Biotics get nerfed quite a lot in the following two games as they no longer affect enemies with protection. The best you can hope for is to stagger the enemy with them. You either have to resort to a small handful of biotic combos or just fall back on your weapons. If you play on the harder difficulty levels then pretty much every enemy has armour and shields, so you can feel pretty useless as a biotic class.

Powers now share a cooldown, so use one power and all are locked out for that time. Sure it may only be a second or two but it just feels like an unnecessary restriction to me.

Ammo is now a power which you activate like any of the others. For example all through Mass Effect 1 I used Cryo Rounds with my Adept Shepard. Come Mass Effect 2 and I can no longer use Cryo Ammo as it is not a bonus power and not one available to squad-mates. The same for Mass Effect 3. Only Soldier, Infiltrator, and Vanguard Shepards can use Cryo Ammo.

I confess I am in the minority in thinking the first game's combat is the best. Most people seem to think that the changes are all for the better. Judge them for yourself and let us know what you think.

I see.  Thanks.  As I said I am a duffer at this and don't play at the higher levels yet, but what you say makes sense.

I think that the store is worth slogging through the missions.  There is something sweet about a Geth Pulse Rifle X with 3 mod slots, and I like getting the cool armors for Wrex.  There is also an armor for Garrus that looks exactly like Nihlus'.

The store?  Is that the convoy you can buy stuff from?  Can you pick what you want to buy or pay your credits and take your chances?

It is random. You just pay your credits and take your chances. But at the end of the game you can be swimming in credits, so I usually end up getting a bunch of crap I don't need or can't use from the convoy, sell it, then buy some more. Play a few more missions if they are available to get more crap to sell, then repeat the process.

I only really like it so I am guaranteed to get Savant Omni Tools. I know I can get one for completing Bring Down the Sky late game with enough charm/intimidate, but I don't always put points into charm/intimidate. You can also get Savant Biotic Amps, but I find that those seem to drop with a slightly higher frequency in-game than the Omni Tools.

Lol, but yes. Mass Effect 3 tries to be a shooter but falls flats at merging shooting with biotics. It makes the biotic classes near useless.
