As the title says.  What area did you find the most frustration inducing, not including any of the DLC.

Personal Worst Area in my experience

For my part, I would have to say my most hellish area is the Emerald Graves, where all those Landmarks are with wandering Brontos and Giants with a few Red Templars thrown in.  This area can be a constant fire fighting nightmare for me, especially if you end up fighting a giant or two as well as a couple of Brontos who are always so close to the giants it's nearly impossible to avoid pulling them into the fray.  My only advice would be to not go into this area with a lot of glass cannons, or at a level lower than 15-17 (the Fade Rift in this area is Level 20).

Personal worst single fight in my experience

My runner up is actually only one Fade Rift.  When you're asked to get Dennett, part of the conditions he agrees to require that you go past the river to the wolves.  Doing so will almost surely put you face to face with you first Level 15 enemy Fade Rift when you are likely level 7 or 8.  This Fade Rift was absolutely hellish and killed me so many times until I realised it was best approached from the top of the waterfall, rather than from the River, where you will probably be killed by the Desire Demons.

I know I started another thread today, but I'm curious to see which areas others found difficult and if possibly ideas can be tossed around to assist one another if we're having trouble.

Forbidden Oasis and Hissing Wastes were the only maps that made me go '' nope, not doing this '' after visiting them once (not due to difficulty though). Lucky for me, any of the companion quests don't take place there (unless Solas has one in there, in which IDGAF about the eggman anyway).

Forbidden Oasis isn't a lot of fun with regard to shard collection but Hissing Wastes, admittedly I have to have music going or be chatting with my daughter as this is a very boring area.  Almost no enemies and way too spread out.

I've always run past that one on my way to the wolves. After a few futile attempts at too low level, I came to the conclusion that it wasn't meant to do right then.

As for OT, I agree on Forbidden Oasis. Still have trouble finding my way there.

@AnimalBoy  Yes, jump strafe doesn't work as well in this game as it does in the Elder Scroll/Fallout Series.  I've actually been shot out into the sea on the Storm Coast attempting to scale one of those Giants Causeway like structures.

Exalted Plains in a second.  It is a gorgeous zone, which makes its a god damned shame its one of the worst exploration experiences I've ever had in a game. Constant backtracking, two awful collectathon quests (shards and letters), two zones you can't enter without doing war table ops and for a area that seems so intrinsic to whats going on Orlais it has absolutely no effect on anything in Orlais.

Plus ... I'm uber biased, because it was due to that zone alone that I couldn't even get my Rift Mage specialization until level 15.

As Friskens said, you can run by that rift along the river, you know.

@thats1evildude  I know you can, but I also like to just clear it out and that's easily done, even at level 7 or 8, from the top of the waterfall - make sure no one is using a cold based weapon and that you have archers rather than Cole and Solas is a must for the Barrier spell which I believe he starts with.

Fallow Mire when I'm not grossly over-leveled. Exalted Plains isn't really a 'hell', but I find it very tiresome and skippable.

@The Baconer.  I'll agree that this level is a serious pain if you're not levelled well.  That end fight is tough if you're not prepared for it.  Did this just recently though and I will say this (don't know if anyone else feels as strongly as I do about this).  Bioware, do NOT make the jump button the same button as is used to pick things up.  When I'm trying to evade an attack and to do so I need to jump, I don't want to get walloped because my character happens to be standing next to loot.  This guy flattened me on the stairs when I went to leap off of them only to find my girl casually bending over to pick up some mabari totem or other...

The Exalted Plains. It has such a boring color scheme and the areas are either drab or confusing.

The Undead pits are such a pain, both to navigate and destroy since the damn Arcane Horror "Won't stand still so I can hit him".  And poison arrows, yuck. The main story is kind of depressing and the mooks are rather meh. And cleaning out the area takes so long. At least the other zones are pretty.

Any exploreable area too rocky or mountainous, especially Emprise due Lion.

The controls are buggy for the mouse and keyboard, so just the act of moving is a pain in the butt, so I try to move as little as possible by moving toward my destination in a straight line. Very rocky or mountainous areas don't let me do that. I hate constantly running into unclimbable cliffs, falling off sudden drops, having to go around giant hills or mountains standing in my way, walking through a ravine or gorge that looks like it's heading where I'm going only for it to curve away from my destination then find out on the other side that there's another roadblock to my destination and I have to backtrack all the way back and find a different route; I hate having to comb the area searching for some obscure path in order to climb a stupid hill or mountain that stands between me and my quest destination and then it taking forever, etc.

The Hinterlands, the Sword Coast and Emprise du Lion all do this, but Emprise du Lion is the worst. I was literally screaming and tearing my hair out when I played it the first time. The PC controls have gotten a little better since then, but Emprise's geography and hidden mountain path still gets on my nerves.

Hmm..... I thought Emprise was pretty straightforward. It's mountainous but the path forward is generally obvious. Unlike the Oasis. But of course, the Oasis was supposed to be difficult to navigate. I think there's a dev post on the official site about that.

Mission accomplished, I guess.

Not for everyone. -_- I combed every inch of the base of that mountain trying to find a way up to the castle before finally looking to Youtube to see where that path was, missed it again, had to double-check Youtube again, THEN found it. By then I was really in a mood for a massacre, and Imshael gave me exactly what I wanted.

I have to stress that the frustration mainly comes from the mouse and keyboard being wonky. For most "normal" players (on game consoles or with game pads), hitting invisible road blocks or having to find the road is a mild inconvenience that's cleared up in five or so mintures. When you're playing with wonky control keys, just the art of moving is an irritation, which just gets more irritating the longer you play, so running into invisible road blocks or having to look for a path (especially when you can see your destination right there) just adds rage and frustration on top of your already less than stellar mood. (Not to mention it takes much longer to clear up because, again, wonky controls.)

I found the mountainous regions less hellacious after my boyfriend lent me his game pad. Then it broke not too longer after, then I went back to feeling like the mountainous areas (which are most of DAI's explorable areas) were designed to torture PC players.

Unlike the Oasis. But of course, the Oasis was supposed to be difficult to navigate. I think there's a dev post on the official site about that.

Yeah, I took one look at that Oasis, turned right back around, and haven't gone back.

Personally I like all the areas in one way or another as it's an overall beautiful game but if I had to pick my least favourite I'd asy Fallow Mire. Thankfully it's a small short area anyway which dosen't require you to spend much time there.

The Fallow Mire, at least until I realized that I wasn't supposed to walk in the water, but that happened only from my 2nd playthrough!

Joking apart, my vote goes to Forbidden Oasis which I totally hated. I think the first time I spent no less than 10 hours in order to get all the shards and orientate myself in that maze. Moreover, the first time I went there I explored all the desert part of that map. By foot.

In terms of frustrating, The Storm Coast, finding and killing the Rebel Mage. If I'm up the hill, he's down the hill. If I'm down the hill, he's up the hill. I have to wade through Mabari, Hessarian Warhounds, bears, darkspawn, etc., to get to him, then he teleports away. Takes forever.

Thank the Maker for the Golden Nug, never need to do again for the Mighty Offense tonic recipe.

Second most frustrating, The Storm Coast, finding the demons to kill to do the Tempest specialization for Essence Containment Apparatus.

Third most frustrating, The Storm Coast, in the big spider cave with all the broken navmesh, so my party gets stuck in a wall.

... seeing a theme here? ;)

Well strangely enough I was looking for this last night and I found him pretty quick. Yes i had to search for him but it didn't take me that long to find him. He proved harder to fight than to find tbh. At least last night he was.

The only area I dislike is Fallow Mire. Storm coast is easy in comparison. Even that nasty rift in the river is easy.

all of the places, god i hate do the hinterland quest, mostly because you have no real idea how the map markers work in that place(other places to but this one is particularly bad.) How many times have you tried to reach a marker only to find that it seems inaccessible or is elevated in away you can't possibly reach it from the bottom nor did you really see a way up to that elevation on your way there only to then realize it's not exactly accurate but was behind some barrel or crate just off to the side.

I agree with those who say the Exalted Plains.  That place is super tedious.  The search quests are tiresome and the shards are in super annoying locations.  Plus, the endless mobs of undead at the barricades?  That place is the worst and I cringe everytime I'm forced to return there.
