While the screech is frustrating, so long as you have someone in your party casting Barrier, it doesn't bother me that much, save for that one final dragon in Emprise Du Lion who seems to screech constantly leaving my party staggering around more often than not. That said, I usually don't tackle the dragons until my final step in an area, so I'm usually of a very comfortable level to deal with all of them. Screech away, I'll win anyway.

I avoid dragons as much as possible and will give them a wide berth. There's one area that's crawling with the blighters so,I peek and withdrawal since there's one flying overhead that will breath fire down on the group if they linger to long..

Dragons simply have no place in video games as enemies anymore thanks to the casual gameplay takeover.
They are pretty much the closest thing in any given fantasy world to living gods, are probably the most ancient, most wise, most formidable in magic, they can fly, their breath is death, they're huge and all around probably the strongest things you'll ever fight.
Short of a divine move or having godlike power yourself there is no believable way any normal hero or band of adventurers would defeat, let alone kill one, and even if they could it could just fly away.
Dragon fights are always woefully gamey and illogical to various degrees of cringe, but in recent years where every boss has to have attack telegraphs, be slow, predictable, limited and the game autosaves for you dozens of times per fight things have reached all new lows. If you want truly terrifying Dragon fights try games like King of Dragons, Shadows over Mystara and the original Baldur's Gate. Those Dragon battles were no joke.

@Skarbrand Don't know if you've played it, but save for the main dragon fight in Dragon's Dogma (quick time/puzzle fight), I think they did fighting dragons well too. The UR dragon in that game is so difficult that it takes multiple party members to beat it and you're set to a timer to fight him. They have enormous HP, only one vulnerable spot, have an instant kill move which will immediately down all pawns, a possession move and then of course the whole fire, ice or electricity breath as well as tail swipes, the drop down etc. They are real challenges and incredibly fun boss battles. I prefer the DAI dragon fights to the couple that you do in DAO and the two you do in DA:2 though. Bit more active, but the dragon lacks an instant kill move (the grab or chomp move from the first and second game) and instead just calls/spawns babies to assist. I'm generally not a fan of adds being the difficulty definer in battles.

High dragons in Dragon Age are just giant animals. There are probably intelligent, magic-using dragons somewhere, but the ones we run into are beasts who do not cast spells, do not speak, and are vulnerable enough to attack that they once hunted to near-extinction.

No not difficult, they never have been at least for me. The screeching which summons mini mes is just really annoying as it simply prolongs the battle which to begin with isn't at all difficult even with all the trails and hardest diff. Combine that with having one or two squad mates getting stuck and never moving for a good five minutes(due to excessive mini me carnage) until they die which then I have to revive them. All in all it's just annoying, I think two dragons did not screech and just went full bad ass and refused to call for help.Wait high dragons are difficult?
@bigbad-- I agree, I mean the old gods were dragons and were worshipped by extremely powerful high priest who actually managed to breech the fade and enter the golden/black city. Why would such powerful persons worship something lesser than they? Of course the blight could've rendered their magical abilities null I still think the two remaining old gods are magically inclined and am hoping in future dragon age games we see a few more dragons that are akin to skyrim dragons by which I mean magical abilities and sentience. Though the old gods could be apart of the elven pantheon..

The Old Gods aren't dragons, but merely took the form of dragons.
