I just started a new game last week and I'm in Skyhold and looking at the map, and just dreading the Emerald Graves and the Exalted Plains. I like the lore parts, like the Temple of Dirthamen, but the rest just makes me want to bury my head in my pillow and start up another series playthrough of Mass Effect.

So if anyone has ideas on the skippable parts, but with leaving the absolute minimum to get to the major story points, that would be great.

This guide sort of has what you're looking for (do note I did say, "sort of"). For the most part, the main story threads for each map are established right when you enter it from the information given by Scout Harding.

Both the Exalted Plains are Emerald Graves are annoying in that their lore bits require you to run through most of the map and are connected via the Freemen. There is nothing to be done about that other than skip them entirely if you just can't stomach burning another body pit.

This is super helpful! I do hate the body pits and may just skip that. I think the only thing that I enjoyed coming out of the Exalted Plains was Solas' personal quest, the interaction with the Dalish, and getting to the Temple. The rest I'm okay ignoring.

If you don't want to do the side content, just avoid all of the maps except for when you go for personal quests and such. Pretty much all of the content is not impactful if you can handle not completing everything (unlike me unfortunately :P). The only interesting 'quests' I can think of are the temple ones that you get by going to the map first. Maybe the dwarven ruins in the Hissing wastes as well, and the haunted mansion in the Emerald Graves. Most of the other quests in the maps are filler. The Hinterlands dwarven ruin area is cool (I'd leave it for when Varric's personal quest is given so you don't have to go there twice). I personally find Fallow Mire cool because it's quite unique and one of the smallest areas. The Western Approach's frozen time temple is nice...basically all the smaller areas are more interesting :P.
