Hi, so I'm finally doing the Jaws of Hakkon DLC because there was a few months there where I couldn't get it to work, but I'm up to Gurd Harofsen and playing on Nightmare as I always do. I originally had my party as Iron Bull, Sera, Dorian, and Inquisitor, but got flogged by this boss over and over, so I reloaded and have taken Blackwall because he is Champion and Cole because he is Assassin, keeping Dorian. I continue to get ruined by him because he doesn't seem to care that Blackwall is taunting, but will instead grab my other party members in ice and then one hit them. Should I be using an entirely melee party to avoid this? I find that rogue is extremely squishy and dies too quickly on nightmare as melee if I'm not entirely focusing on them the whole fight, so I would prefer to be able to leave my inquisitor and any other rogue I take as archer. Also when he douses the fires, I have to run over to a new one to avoid the ice dot, which gives him another opportunity to do the ice grab. Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated, thanks. :)

A couple of general thoughts- what has worked for me

-Mark of the Rift can be really helpful in this battle.

- Fully upgraded grenades/tonics (antivan fire and Might Offensive Tonic will be a big help).

- Position yourself behind him when the battle commences (where his mages are and near the warming fire). Kill the mages while your party handles the bruisers and Corpse archers.

- When Gurd comes to life- Mark of Death- mark of the rift- and then hit him with the best combo of damage dealing you have in your party. I've had this battle last anywhere from a few seconds (Assassin with Bosun's Blade) to a few minutes (2H Champion). I just fought him tonight and he killed my whole party except me (KE). So- if you are desperate to get through it- bring Vivienne.

- Also- he is vulnerable to fire. Fire mines and Antivan fire grenades would be really beneficial. Also- bees. Bees are always good for keeping the bruisers off of you.

Your IQ is a rogue? Archer? What specialization? What XP level? Do you have Trials on?

If you have Trials on, turn them off. It's a hard enough battle without them on Nightmare. The Walk Softly trial does have Immunity: Taunt as one of its promoted abilities, but I didn't think promotion worked on bosses. He might just have it intrinsically. What does the Tactical stat say for him? It's not in the wiki.

There are some suggestions here, like have two mages, one a KE (Vivienne), so you can Dispel and use Fade Step to evade his warp attack. Also says to use Aegis:

http://dragonage.wik.../Ameridan's_End

When I did this boss battle, my IQ was a level capped Rift Mage, so I just used a lot of CC to control adds and Fade Step to evade Gurd. I stayed the hell away from him as much as possible. Probably not that much help to you, unless you still have Solas around.

I think I had Cass, Sera and Dorian. Sera did fine with Leaping Shot, FoF, FoL and when the adds were down, full 3 bars of Thousand Cuts.

Oh, and I used Antivan Fire grenades. I think every party member had fully upgraded Antivan Fire and spammed them. Fully upgrades, they last a long time.

All party members also had as much resistance to cold gear (legs, arms, chest, belt) as possible. This is not a time to skimp on Tier 4 mats.

More tips here, but this is for taking on that battle with only a duo:

Thanks for the advice! I'll go back to the potions table and take antivan fire grenades, and use aegis of the rift. My inquisitor is a rogue archer tempest, at level 25. I'll have a few more tries, putting cole back in melee makes him do much more damage, at least when behind, but requires that I spend more time managing his positioning, and so less time making sure the rest of my party lives. Hopefully I should get it soon.

yeah the easy way is to take confusion grenades into this fight and throw them at the brutes - one brute can kill gurd by himself in less than 30 seconds but it's very silly. Or use Dorian to spirit mark a brute and kill it and have the brute spirit fight gurd for you.

The mages at the beginning are the toughest on nm with trials because of their barrier regen and mines. best to burst and crrowd control them with a fire wall and mark of the rift before they start teleporting all around and laying mines.

aegis of the rift seems to be the solution to the poison arrows from the archers should they spawn before you dispatch gurd.

Fight with Gurd Harofsen very entertaining don't spoil it with trickery, only nightmare with trials.

If you've upgraded Varric's Bianca, and can afford to craft him decent armour with crit chance, you can always take him along. As soon as you get to Gurd, use Hail of Arrows and cheese your way to victory with leaping shot spam. The main downside is that it's slightly boring, and because the fight is over in 10s, you won't get the firestarter achievement.

If you want super cheese, use mighty offence tonic.
