Most accessories, weapons, and other gear are highlighted in black and white.  Others, however, are in green, gold, or red.  What do the colors indicate?

Also, you see stars next to each item:  0 to 5 stars.  It varies with the class of character, so if 5 stars pops up next to an accessory, I would assume it's the best accessory for that character.  Am I correct on this?

What accessory characteristics matter most to mages?  Rogues?  Warriors?

+2 Mana/stamina production?  More health?  Attack?  Etc.  Fire resistance is good if you know a dragon fight is coming up.  Other characteristics not so obvious.

The stars are a relative ranking of the item compared to your level.  3-stars equals "average for current level".

Player feedback indicates that it is not always a reliable guide (over estimates value of items.)

Red - trash

Black & White - common item

Gold - rare, good quality

Purple - legendary, high quality, usually has some kind of story attached to it (Codex)

Green - DLC item. Usually scales with player level, good stats sometimes better than purples.

The star system is mostly useless and confuses players.

Thanks!  The star system is a good starting point, but it's frequently wrong.  I've also used the value merchants are willing to pay for accessories to figure out what's worth keeping.  That, too, isn't a perfect indicator.

The most important thing, I suppose,  is to know what accessory characteristics are important for what class of character.  I've assumed attack is the most important for warriors, followed by rogues.  I figured mana/stamina is most important for mages, followed by rogues.  But what's better?  +2 mana/stamina regeneration?  Or +whatever mana/stamina?  Critical chance or damage I always assumed were most important for rogues, but now I just received a Dalish ring for Merrill that has those characteristics.  Are character-specific accessories usually the best item for the specific character?

Depending on how far along in the story you are at the time, the "Character-specific" items usually have pretty high stats when received, and the attributes are usually the ones that are useful for that character.  But except for the sentimental value you assign them (see "Real Feelings for Virtual People") there's no reason to keep using them if you acquire better items later.

Some are more important as plot-devices than for their characteristics (Merrill's ring is a good example.)  If you give it to her, doing so triggers conversations and additional PQs that otherwise wouldn't be possible.
