Is there much support for a return to the aesthetics of ME1?

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who would want a return to the gameplay of ME1, but how many people preferred the aesthetic/style of ME1 over the sequels? The harsher lighting, brighter colors, simpler/sleeker designs of just about everything, etc all make ME1 look very different from the sequels and IMO very different from every other sci-fi game franchise out there right now.

Maybe it's just my love of 80's sci-fi and style, but ME2 and 3 looked so much more generic and Andromeda(based on the armor and Ark designs) seems to be aping Halo more than a little.

Give me the Andromeda gear and I'll let you keep the rest of it.

The only thing bugging me is that the centre bottom pic appears to have oddly placed arms. They look like they're lower and protruding from the guys back. Ew.

I liked some of the aspects of it. Mostly the suit system (although many will disagree) but also overall the in game objects seemed like a clean futuristic (but still modern) looking objects. I was never able to quite put my finger on how to describe it. It's just that clean white thing and also background sound when you were in the underground Bunkers? Like the ones on the moon in which the AI was placed. Seemed like a classic sci-fi thing.

But maybe 80's sci-fi style describes it pretty well.

As much as I would love to see some of that return it's still useless. They're not in that stage of development anymore and changes like that won't happen. And even if they were, I seriously doubt that this would be a good marketing decision on Biowares or EA side. Since that flashy style we have now can be sold way better to the general public. (That's the burden of being a true AAA title)

I love the orange on the new suit though.

I actually don't miss much of ME1's overall aesthetic, particularly the tactical wetsuit armor and weapon designs. I say bring on the new. What I'm really hoping for is bringing back at least some of that old atmosphere, with a bright new sea of stars to explore and colorful characters to talk to and/or kill.

What I do miss is the whole light-medium-heavy armour thing. It just made sense for soldiers with different specialities to have different armour, you can kinda do something like it in ME3(more armour piece choices) but not the same.

Also the mod system has to make sense, adding barrel length that looks like it came from a firearm to a railgun makes no sense.

Otherwise I am ok with the art style of ME2 and ME3.

Maybe it was just the bad graphics, but I really didn't dig the aesthetics in ME1.

The only ME:A armor they've shown us images of looks so bulky. I like the details, I just hope there are some options on the sleek side as well.

I liked the aesthetics of ME1, but I think it would only work if it also contained the thematic elements as well.  Environments in ME1 felt advanced yet sterile, which I think was a purposeful decision given the direction towards corporate whitewashing.  Lots of ambient dialogue about major corporations getting into trouble and in legal battles, over-friendly VI's that brush aside anything beyond superficial questioning, complaints about bureaucracy and unfair working conditions, heck almost all of the main quest lines (and plenty of side quests) involved some corporation engaging in shady and unethical research.

I think the clean, bright, almost sterile feel of the aesthetics played well with the corporate dystopia they were trying to capture.

Hmmm.... when I look at those pics I see low poly counts and simple textures rather than an aesthetic choice.

I like the new bulky armour we've been shown, but hoping for alternatives. What i would want is a difference in design from class to class. Or atleast from Engineer to Biotic to Soldier. Bringing back Light, Medium and Heavy could solve that. So i voted NO.

Difficult to say since ME1 also came with atrocious color schemes and an inability to customize the look of certain parts within an armor set.

NOPE!

Kidding, I preferred the light/medium/heavy system and liked the diversity of some of the armors.

But man, some were really, really ugly.

I liked the light/medium/heavy system and I loved that each piece of equipment had a little blurb about the manufacturer. But the armours could look really goofy in ME1. Most of the light armour looked like wetsuits with weird colour schemes. So I'm leaning more towards the new style.

The real aesthetic travesty is ME3 Cerberus. Their design clashed with everything else in the series. The troopers , the swords, the palm cannon things that phantoms had, etc. It was like they were from a different game.

I feel like I have to say that the Phoenix armor was supposed to be white and red, not white and pink. When it's color-corrected it looks pretty great.
I feel like I should also say that the ME1 aesthetic/style would make a dreamwave/synth wave soundtrack pretty viable...

Yes. I miss that 80s scifi feel too.

Aside from the swords, I agree. The swords can stay (maybe only a certain few can use them).

I am not fully certain where I stand on the graphics of Mass Effect 1, but I like the graphics of Mass Effect 2 way more than Mass Effect 3. I do not know why, though.

Agreed. I liked the grainy widget, the dark washed-out colour palette, and the thick blooming effects. It was the perfect amount of 80's sci-fi cheese. ME2 and 3 feel i bit more generic, imo.

From the HELL to the NO. If Andromeda is anything like ME1 aesthetically, I'm not playing it.

Hmm, I thought for a second this might be about ME2's and 3's use of jump suits in place of armor. I could get behind a return to ME1's actual armor. But I'm not 100% sure I understand based on the above images what was unique about ME1's aesthetic. Like Alan said, it just seems like low textures.

Not just the armours from ME1 (some are definitely ugly) but the overall tone and vibe that came from certain design choices. The granular widget, the sleek, almost B movie-esque armour designs, and the scifi technopop all contributed to this cheesy scifi TV show appeal. It was a pretty unique style to video games, on my opinion.

By ME3, it felt a little more grandiose and modern, and the aesthetics lacked the personality that ME1 had, for better or worse.

Didn't care for ME1 aesthetic, I much preferred ME3's. I liked ME1's diversity in armor sets, but as far as looks go, they were horrendous. Armor in ME3 just looked more convincing.

There certainly will be. The armor from the trailer for example looks sleeker than the one in the OP. As a guess, maybe you can "bulk up" a lighter armor with different pieces.

The best armor Shepard armor in the OP is from ME2.

What are the "everything elses" that you think look sleeker in ME1 than in the sequels?
